View Full Version : Telling time
Bev March 24th, 2006, 12:11 PM At what age did your child learn to tell time?
At what age did s/he become intersted in time?
Will you try to teach them analog or digital?
TtownAnne March 24th, 2006, 12:15 PM Caroline has been interested for a looooooooong time (no pun intended!); maybe nearly a year? It's hard to teach someone to tell time who can't count by 5s and confuses digital 5s and 2s!
Bev March 24th, 2006, 12:17 PM At what age did your child learn to tell time? Mason doesn't tell the time yet.
At what age did s/he become intersted in time? Mason has recently become quite interested in time. We have several digital clocks in the bedrooms and he notices them and will say "it's dot 7 dot dot 4 3." The dots are for the am/pm and the colon. :)
The other day first thing in the morning he walked right past me to the big analog clock and said, "look at this one. Mine says..." and he ran back to his room to look at the digital.
I bought him a Timex kids watch that teaches you to tell time. He loves it. There is also a guarantee that if he loses it within a year I can get a replacement for $10.

Mandi March 24th, 2006, 12:19 PM Micayla is interested in it but can't tell time yet. She asked for a Dora clock for Xmas and got it. She'll point out the numbers on it but that's about it.
MIL is getting her a watch for her birthday. I personally think she's too young for it, but I'm not going to argue. I have a feeling it'll just get chucked into the bottom of the toy a few days later though.
Barb March 24th, 2006, 12:20 PM Liam is fascinated with clocks and asks me quite often what time it is. I don't think he understands the concept at all though.
Karri March 24th, 2006, 04:30 PM That is a cute watch, Bev!
Aidan is fascinated w/ time. He always asks what time it is and what that means. We have a Melissa & Doug wooden clock and I havent started working on reading the clock yet. I just think it would go over his head.
Analog or digital? I think analog first.
magoo March 24th, 2006, 04:50 PM he notices them and will say "it's dot 7 dot dot 4 3." The dots are for the am/pm and the colon. :)
Anna does the same thing. :) She's also like Caroline in that she confuses 2's and 5's when they're digital.
She's interested in time, and talks about it all of the time, but she's still too young to really grasp it. She'll often attach actions to time when she's talking, for instance, she'll say "I'll brush my teeth at 11:30."
Alyssa March 24th, 2006, 04:53 PM I was just thinking yesterday how great it is that Aidan's figured out how to read larger numbers so that he can now tell me digital time. :aok: Like, me in bed yesterday morning, too exhausted to open my eyes had Aidan tell me what time...and he told me that I was late. (7:48)
This is new - within the last few weeks. He's been interested in telling time for a while - asking what time it is and wanting to wear a watch.
We do have a toy for telling time but it's not very popular. I would like to pull it out to teach him analog time telling. I also think they are getting to that in school.
Bev March 24th, 2006, 07:07 PM I'm trying to do analog first too. Incidentally I paid considerably less than the Timex site has that watch listed for. :)
Mason is always saying he's not going to talk to me for 3 weeks. He never follows through though. He just keeps talking.
Alyssa March 24th, 2006, 07:37 PM Aidan is very interested in how long Joe is away right now. First thing this morning he said "2, right?" I was awfully confused them I figured out he meant it was day 2 since Daddy was gone. He knows it's 4 days.
That said, today he told me he was going away for 100 years with Nana. :dunno:
Stacey March 24th, 2006, 08:24 PM Well, it seems like most of the kids are in the same boat. Maia is too... very interested in what time it is, but she can't tell time.
She's had watches from the grandmas, but they're just jewelry basically. She likes to talk about the numbers and what time it is, but she doesn't really get it all.
That Timex watch is cool for when it's time to really start working with her on it though. Do they have a girl version?
Stacey March 24th, 2006, 08:29 PM They do have a girl's version.

When I was looking, I also saw some Disney ones that were time teachers. I can't remember where I saw them though. :\
Silke March 24th, 2006, 08:53 PM I remember, I got my first watch when I was six on my first day of school, except I had no clue on how to read it.
Time concept is not as easy as it looks. Natascha started in Kindergarten reading full hours. Then they go by halfs to quarters and then eventually in minutes by like second grade, if I remember correctly.
I would think, the full hour should be possible...maybe even the half hour, but quarters and such..that's asking too much.

I'm definitely gonna have to buy Eliot one of these
Eliot started to get interested in time in about October, he would run and look at the analog clock in the family room and then run to look at the digital on the microwave.
My friend gave him this book for Christmas and he took off

By Elizabeth Mills
He turned 5yrs old in Jan. and can now tell time from an analog clock, he actually knows what each number is worth (1=5, 2=10, 9=45, etc)... shocked me when I found out he knew it!
I asked him if he learned that at school, he said no, he learned it at home, I asked how and he said by looking at the analog clock and then looking at the digital one.
I have to add that after he got the book from my friend he became obsessed with time and would tell us the time every few minutes... drove me mad!! I just couldn't see the benefits though now I can see
Mary DK March 24th, 2006, 10:35 PM Amazon has this one for $13.99

And this one for $9.99 though it doesn't seem to be water resistant like the other one

They also have other similar ones. I have a $25 GC for Amazon, now I know what I'm getting with part of it :aok:
Hannabanana March 24th, 2006, 11:02 PM I was just thinking yesterday how great it is that Aidan's figured out how to read larger numbers so that he can now tell me digital time. :aok: Like, me in bed yesterday morning, too exhausted to open my eyes had Aidan tell me what time...and he told me that I was late. (7:48)
 and this is why i love digital as well!
Hanna would rather not know what time it is because the only time I really worry about time is in the morning, trying to get her out the door to go to school (when she'd much rather play) and at night in trying to get her to bed.
Bev March 25th, 2006, 09:01 AM Mason just found out yesterday (by accident?) that if you press the button on the side, it will glow green, so he's constantly running to close himself in the bathroom to light it up!
The cool thing about that watch is that is has the 5, 10, 15 etc on the very outside to help them learn that.
Stacey the girl one is cute! :)
Alyssa March 25th, 2006, 09:43 AM My SIL gave Aidan a similar watch years ago. He and Colin fight over it.
Mary - I am going to check out that book! I am very impressed by Eliot's drive to learn! :aok:
MamaGoofy March 25th, 2006, 11:33 AM David is very interested in learning to tell time. If it is 12:15 he will say it is 12 and 3. I tell him the 3 means 15. He gets a bit confused at that. If it's digital he will say it's 12 and 15. I help him along by telling him the correct time. I know that they are working on time telling at his pre-school.
Mary DK March 30th, 2006, 10:30 AM My SIL gave Aidan a similar watch years ago. He and Colin fight over it.
Mary - I am going to check out that book! I am very impressed by Eliot's drive to learn! :aok:
Thanks Alyssa :)
That book is pretty fun
