I was actually going to ask you about Australia day. The Disney channel is having a huge Australia day thing tomorrow. All of their children's programming will revolve around it (Wiggles of course and Koala Brothers, etc...).

Have a Happy Australia Day!

Thanks everyone :) You have a good one too Deb!

We're not doing anything. Alex is gardening and working on his shed. I am going to drag him away at some stage though to take the kids for a swim.

Australia Day is the BIG DAY here in Perth b/c of the SkyShow. Tonight there will be a huge fireworks display over the city and Swan River. People will be sitting out there now (at 8am) to get a good position. Tomorrow they will start the countdown to next year (364 days to SkyWorks). I just don't get it. You've seen one firecracker, you've seen them all. :dunno:

 Clare... I guess its like the Sydney NYE fireworks, people camp out for days to get good positions...

We didn't do anything overly special either, Tony slept cause he is on nightshift at the moment and I spent the majority of the day at my parents house learning to cook some of her signature dishes and watching Australia beat Sri Lanka in the cricket! go the aussies!

thanks Dennis & Michelle

Dang! I missed it! Sorry!! I hope you had a great day.

What is Australia Day? Just a day to celebrate Australia? Kind of like 4th of July here in America?

Yep thats it  its the official day that the first fleet landed and captian arthur phillip took formal possession of the colony... in 1788......

So lots of fireworks, first fleet reinactments on the harbour and basically people having the day off to drink beer the most australian thing of all to do

So do people shoot off fireworks on their own (day and night) or mostly go to big fireworks shows? It's a combo here, and I'd presume the same there, but didn't know if the laws regulating fireworks were different.

Out where I live we could pretty much launch a truckload of TNT if we wanted to, but in towns/cities and some states it's much more restrictive.

actually no, its illegal now to shoot off your own fireworks.... years and years (I am going back 20 years ago) we used to have "firecracker night" in June where we would buy fireworks and every house in the country would go nuts with them, but after many many years of injuries and deaths due to misuse, they were banned. Of course you can still get them "illegally" and we have gotten some and snuck down the park and let them off, but if caught its a big fine!!

So to answer your question, basically going and watching a professional display.

Deb, I wouldn't have thought you were old enough to remember cracker night  It was a big deal to have your own fireworks when I was a kid, but as Deb said, they've been illegal for many years now. The most we can buy are sparklers.

Ah. That's too bad. Well if you ever get the chance, come on over here to the good old US of A for a visit when fireworks are on sale. We love blowing things up.

Fireworks are dangerous though. There are always injuries. I remember lighting off those tiny firecrackerrs called ladyfingers as a kid. We had a lot of old fence posts, and we'd stick them in the holes and light them. Sometimes the fuses went too fast and one blew up in my face. I remember it looked just like an explosion in a cartoon - billowing smoke interspersed with red, tiny bits of paper, etc. Lucky I didn't go blind.
