Aidens speech therapist was able to get me into a pedi who specialises in children with psychological problems, autism, adhd etc.

Well I went today and told him how I was not happy with the diagnosis his original pedi gave after only a 10 minute conversation about his "symptoms"

He explained to me how he normally spends 3 x 1 1/2 hour sessions and some extensive testing before he determines what is the problem, which i was very happy to hear. We spent our first 1 1/2 hour session today me explaining what has been going on with him including characteristics, episodes, his speech problems and social behaviours also his allergies and anaphylaxis.

After our whole converstation and him watching Aiden interact with Riley he believes that he is NOT adhd. He said that he is more going into the avenue of possible autism but he said that is only a slight possibility but he is leaning towards probably not, but he didn't want to rule it out. He is also going down the avenue of possible sleep apnea, which causes interupted sleep and therefore uncontrollable behaviour during the waking hours...or behavioural problems due to his speech delays.

With the Autism he explained that even if he did have that then we are already doing what he would perscribe as the solution and thats speech therapy,

With the sleep apnea that came about because Aiden has a constant stuffed nose which he wakes up and wipes constantly (i don't see any fluid coming out but he keeps wiping it so I am presuming its there) and he snores through the night. He explained that when someone with apnea goes into a deep sleep there wind pipe gets floppy and they snore in a specific way (which he demonstrated the sound so I can look out for it) and then they don't breathe in then kind of wake up and breathe deep.... he said that when this happens they have very interrupted sleep and when that happens there behaviour is effected in the day.... so I have to observe his sleeping for a few nights in a row around 1am and let him know what i see. If this is what is happening then we will be referred to a specialist to help him with that.

With the speech delays, we have been seeing a therapist for about 9 months now, and although his speech is starting to improve his behaviour has not much. He has patches of good which is a good sign... but he basically said it was obvious to him that Riley (who is 2 and 3 months old) is obviously more socially mature than Aiden (who is 4 in 3months) And after my explanation of his interaction with other children he said that his social behaviour is on par with 18 month old, his intelligence seems to be on par with his age, but his social interactions are very behind and this could be due to his trouble in communication.

So our next appointment is next wednesday where we are going to cover more of his developmental milestones and he will get a full physical check up, then we will have another hour session with just tony and I where we will discuss our parenting etc. And after all this we will be closer to knowing whats going on with our baby.

I feel so much better knowing that this man is being more thorough instead of labelling him incorrectly.

I look forward to getting closer to helping him, I worry so much that he will be left behind and not function in school and am hoping that these steps we are taking will help him avoid any problems.

If you have read through all that thank you :hug99:

This dr sounds great, Deb! I'm so glad that he's not jumping to conclusions and is going to spend so much time with Aiden and you and Tony. I know I'm no expert, but I didn't see any signs of ADHD when I met Aiden. I'm sure that's not the answer. Good luck with figuring this thing out! :bighug:

Deb, sounds like this doctor is definately looking at the whole picture and I'm glad he isn't just labeling him. I'm glad you are able to see this doctor, and I hope to hear another good update soon.

It was during Janelle's sleep study that she was diagnosed with ADD, and the hope that day was that after taking care of the sleep apnea (she has a follow up sleep study in march/april) the ADD will be gone.
