View Full Version : Invitations/announcments with ribbons
Kelly January 18th, 2006, 11:27 PM Christian's birth announcements have a ribbon that ties the cardstock, picture and vellum together. I can't get the ribbon to lay really flat and I'm afraid it's going to get caught on something in the mail and rip open the envelope. I'm probably over thinking this, but I received a similar announcement recently and that had happened. The envelope was ripped right where the ribbon was tied. Has anyone had problems with this happening? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? I was thinking of seeing if they could be hand stamped at the post office so they wouldn't have to go through the machine.
LISA January 18th, 2006, 11:37 PM Most of P's baptism invites got sent back to me wrecked and the ones that did get delivered where destroyed, my guess by the sorting machine :( I would bring a sample over to the post office and have them look at it they best know how well it would fare in their sorting machines etc.
~Andrea~ January 19th, 2006, 12:07 AM I've sent out lots of cards like that and only had a few people have problems when they arrived :dunno: I think you can ask about hand sorting. Not sure if it costs more though. Are you tying the ribbon in a bow or having a flat ribbon?
~Andrea~ January 19th, 2006, 12:09 AM here are 2 examples of cards I did with the ribbon laying flat

Suzi January 19th, 2006, 01:31 AM Kelly, I did Julia's announcements with a bow and had no trouble with them. The ribbon was organza-type ribbon and the bow I made was just like tying shoes.
Jayne January 19th, 2006, 07:43 AM Something you can do (And what I did with my sisters shower invites) Flatten them! I put them under a dictonary. Not for long..Just long enough to have it flat to the card. I did them like your first one you posted. I had none returned to me and none ruined
Kelly January 19th, 2006, 08:22 AM The ribbon is tied in a bow. I tried to flatten them, but it's the knot that is sticking out some and you can't flatten that too much. I'll try to take a pic later.
~Andrea~ January 19th, 2006, 08:27 AM are they already tied? If not you can do them like the ones I posted and they'll lay much flatter than a tied bow.
Ana975 January 19th, 2006, 08:30 AM When I did my goddaughter's invitation it was tied with a bow and had a charm hanging off the bow and I didn't have a problem with them.
Kelly January 19th, 2006, 09:21 AM Yea, they are already tied, but I could take them out if I have to.
Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone!
Here is a pic...it's a long thin ribbon

Bev January 19th, 2006, 09:28 AM Kelly I don't think small bow will get messed up in the mail. I did my wedding invites/announcements with a bow for the invites and like the one Andrea posted for the announcements. I used the "Martha Stewart Perfect Bow" for the invites with an organza ribbon like the one Suzi posted. That bow is made the "bunny ears" way and it will lay flat with the loops up top and the strings at the bottom.
Great announcement! :)
Melissa in Italy January 19th, 2006, 07:30 PM I can't see the pictures but I did Catherine's birth announcement the way you described, so did a friend for her son. Neither of us had a problem. Though I think mine may have been hand-cancelled because I think that's just the way our little overseas post office does things.
Kristen February 10th, 2006, 09:09 PM You've probably solved the problem by now, but you could place a white piece of cardstock on top of the announcement in the envelope.
