My husband and I are both turning 30 this year -- me in May, him in July. How did you celebrate the big 3-0?

We just had some friends over, nothing exciting.

Once couple gave me a gift card to Meida Play, but that was it.

I wanted to go out and get crazy like I use to before I was married and had kids but I was pregnant so my parents threw me a surprise party at their house. It was mostly family and a few close friends.

Dawnie: That was nice of your parents! Did they just have it at their house?

Several of my friends' spouses have thrown parties for them on their 30th. My DH was talking about having some friends over for mine, just something casual with wings/pizza/beer, and I think it would be fun. Is it weird to have a birthday party for yourself? (Technically my DH would be hosting, but if it's at my house, I'm sure I'll have to do some of the work for it).

Sorry, just realized you already said it was at their house.

I haven't celebrated my 30th yet (and won't for another 5 years!! YES I AM BRAGGING!! ) but my DH will be turning 30 in about a year and I am planning a HUGE party!! It will most likely be a surprise and I am inviting all our friends and family! I think the 18th, 25th, 30th, 40th and 50th birthday are a real cause for celebration!!

Not at all!

That's really nice of you Lisa! Can you send some hints to my husband?

Are you having it at home or at a restaurant?

LisaE
February 13th, 2004, 03:16 PM
It will be at home! I think its perfectly ok to throw a party for yourself too  I have before and I don't think it sends a message of being greedy (like if you feel they might feel they HAVE to bring a gift) its more a message of "come celebrate with me, cause I am excited to be turning this age!"

When DH turned 30, we'd only been dating about 3 months. I think we went out to dinner and then downtown Indy to some bars...it was almost 5 years ago!!

For my 30th, we met my family for breakfast in the morning, then DH and I drove around just talking (one of our favorite things to do) for several hours. That afternoon we had an early dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, and that night was a huge fireworks display downtown synchronized to music. One of the local radio stations does it every year on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and that year I was lucky enough it happened on my 30th!

I think we went out to dinner, but I honestly don't remember. I was thinking about it earlier today because I'm starting to plan my 40th.

I wanted to have a big party--as I have planned several for my slightly older friends--but it happened to be the first day of my honeymoon. So DH and I treated ourselves to an extravagant dinner and drinks--in Amsterdam. :)

Dh turned 30 this past summer when I was PG and sick. Regardless, i threw him the coolest surprise bash at a friend's house. I went all out w/ tons of food that I made and lots of yummy booze.
I turned 30 on Dec 23rd. Our babies had been home for 2 weeks. We got takeout from my favorite Thai restauraunt and some cheesecake. woo hoo

We were in Tennessee at my parent's lake house on my 30th birthday. DH had the bright idea that we would spend the day on the lake in my parent's pontoon boat. We had only been out on the lake for a few minutes when we started seeing HUGE storm clouds forming in the sky. We decided we had better be heading back to the house since we had Olivia and our Yorkshire Terrier with us. Well, somehow the boat got turned around and we got lost!! Then we were caught in the most horendous storm I have ever seen. I think we must have been in the eye of the storm. The rain was falling so hard that it actually hurt when it hit your skin. The wind was blowing so hard and we were FREEZING because we were so wet. It actually looked like we were in the middle of the ocean becasue the water was so grey and the waves were HUGE!! Thankfully we had a tarp in the boat that went over the seats while it was docked. We covered up with those to keep warm. I was so afraid that Olivia and my dog were going to freeze. I just kept them covered up completely. Believe it or not, Olivia *somehow* went to sleep and slept through almost the entire thing. Oh yes, we were also running out of gas during this horrible storm too. We just kept driving around trying to find our way home. After 2 hrs that seemed like a THOUSAND, the storm was over. As soon as the fog cleared we easily found our way home. I was so terrified during the whole ordeal. I told DH that I would NEVER EVER go out in the lake with him again. We came back to the house and I took a nice, long , hot shower. Later that evening we went to dinner and then we took Olivia to Ripley's Aquarium. She loved it so much and that just made my day!!

Needless to say, I'll never forget my 30th birthday for many years to come. I'm just glad Olivia was to young too remember any of it!!

its more a message of "come celebrate with me, cause I am excited to be turning this age!"
Actually, for me it will be more a message of "come commisserate with me, cause I am depressed to be turning this age!"

I planned a giant NYC bash for my 30th. Hotels, bars and karaoke with a gaggle of my girlfriends. I got a BFP 2 weeks before my 30th so I ended up spending the night avoiding smoke, drinking seltzer, and was exhausted by 9pm!!! Oh what fun ;)

oh and DH turned 30 when Abby was only a month old so she was a screaming colicky bundle of love. We probably spent the evening rocking her to shut her up !!!

I am not 30 yet but this is what I am hoping for too. I am currently pg and by the time my 30th rolls around (April 2005) my baby will be almost one so I dont plan on being pg again anytime soon. So hopefully I can round up some friends and go out and have some adult fun.

Kim, I should have figured that yours would be that fun.

Mine was pretty much a bummer; went to work and everyone forgot about my birthday. My own mom forgot to wish me a happy birthday that morning when I dropped Jackson off, and dh dropped the ball as well. He gave me a scribbled out, last-minute handmade card and that was it. He made up for it the next day, but the whole day in a nutshell was a dud.

I've decided that my 31st birthday (next Dec) is going to be the one that gets celebrated.

I turned 30 last May. I was unemployed and fed up with it, myself and the world. So- no party then. But towards the end of August we had a family get-together and celebrated all our special dates with our loved ones (I already had a job offer by then...): my 30th (may 18), Yumi's 5th (July 15), DH's 32nd (july 25), Shoham's 1st (August 7), AND our 10th wedding anniversary (August 17).
When DH had his 30th, I invited a group of friends of ours (I already mentioned in my journal once, the men have known each other for over 10 years) to a restaurant and surprised DH. That is, I only paid for the b-day cake and everyone ordered and paid for their own meals.

I am so jealous of all the people who said they either spent the day with their babies or were pregnant for their 30th.

I can't quite remember. I know I hadn't been dating my DH that long and I kind of recall him being sick. I don't think I did anything special. I do remember my 31st birthday. I got engaged. :rahrah:

We just had a quiet lovely evening for 2 on the actual B-Day-- but a month later we had a big party with friends... DH and I turned 30 w/in a week of each other and a 3rd friend was 30 another 7 days later-- so the party was for the 3 of us and included all our friends in common. instead of 30 candles on the cake we used the big number kind and put "90" as the sum of our years of experience.

My 30th is coming up in September. I, personally, am not planning a thing. I am living it up to DH who will probably get me a vacuum cleaner or something like that. :rotflmao:

My husband threw me a suprise party with my family, which didn't turn out to be a surprise because dh can't lie (a good thing!).

My two best buddies at work took me out to a really nice lunch and bought me a box full of toys to keep in my office. THAT was the best!

Hee hee - I haven't had my 30th yet, but I think we're planning a cruise with a bunch of friends. Woo hoo!

My best friend turned 30 a few weeks after I did, so we went on a cruise together halfway between the two dates. It should have been a really fun trip, but things were tense because everyone was so worried about terrorism. (It was 10 days after 9-11.)

My *actual* thirtieth birthday was the day of the terrorist attacks, so I spent the evening sobbing while watching the news. My husband still brought home flowers, and dinner, and a birthday cake for me though.
