Nine southeast Missouri junior high school students are recovering after eating cupcakes laced with laxatives.
The students at R.O. Hawkins Junior High in Cape Girardeau became ill Thursday.
Two ninth-grade girls admitted giving away the cupcakes as a joke to about a dozen friends.
Both girls were suspended for five days.

That made national news?! That's either really sad or a good sign that nothing bad is happening. :)

I can't tell from the few pieces of information but I can imagine why this would be national news:
Students are intentionally drugging their fellow students as a joke with no regard for the safety of their (alleged) friends.
The victims of this assault might have been injured by it (we can't tell from the article - I'd presume not, but still a consideration).
Frankly, I wouldn't have accepted less than expulsion if I'd been one of the parents of the girls who were administered the drugs. This is really extraordinarily cavalier and potentially dangerous behavior. I can't imagine accepting this from a stranger much less a friend. :blue:

I personally can't think of a year this wasn't done at my school :dunno: I don't think it's any big deal, personally... Maybe it's just that ole Southern humor

Right, stuff like this happens all the time.

This happened when I went to high school too. I would be more concerned if the girls used "recreational drugs" instead of just an OTC laxative.

Yeah, I think I know both people that did this or had this happen to them. It's one of those stupid teen pranks.

I dont think that should have made national news...But I DO think its a big deal. I would be irate if someone gave my child any kind of drug! What if one of those kids was on another medicine and had a major interaction, what if one had an intestinal problem?
I agree that it's stupid to be broadcast over the nation...I dont care about that..but I would care a lot if it happened in my little world.

From your thread title, I thought the post was going to be the announcement of the divorce of Barbie and Ken!
