DH & I were driving around the other day and we saw a Maine lisence plate, which brought up the question: What are people from Maine called? Mainers? Mainians? Mainiacs? People from Maine?

Bretta, I can't think of much more of a difference in accents than going from Maine to Alabama!

I'm not sure. She lives in either GA or CA (they were moving to CA last I heard) now.

****Very tongue-on-cheek**** Aren't they called Canadians?
Seriously, it's amazing how many young people from the south think that Minnesota and Maine (why those 2 especially I've still not figured out) are both in Canada. I get asked frequently if it was hard to go through immigration.

Dennis- This is SOOO true! I used to work for a company in Bedford, MA, and my boss had a SERIOUS New England accent. He never could understand me, and I had a really hard time understanding him  It was pretty funny the first time we tried to have a conversation!

I don't remember what the plate said. Do you mean the #s or the catchphrase? (I don't think it was personalized... I always think of Rhode Islanders for that)
I am from CT, which is one reason that Stagg was getting such a kick out of my not knowing what Maine people are called. BTW-- people from CT are Connectiquicheans

but don't forget the ever favorite ~ Yankee!!!
My grandparents call me a Yankee. They live in Georgia and apparently anyone not from the south qualifies as a Yankee. They like to remind me of this frequently.

I didn't know what people from Maine were called either. And I didn't know I was a Connectiquichean :)
I just wanted to let you guys know that it is definitely not a New England thing to talk like "pahk the cah", we make fun of that in CT just as much as anyone else does!! :) And we also laugh at the "wicked".

I went to college in Maine, and in addition to Down Easters, Maniacs, and Mainers - Nards was another term we used for the locals. I believe it's after North American Rural Dweller.

Jeez, I thought Americans were only ignorant of Canadian geography, turns out they don't know anything about their own country either! (That comment is all in good fun of course! I freely admit I know NOTHING about US geography except the west coast part). I'm still having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that Detroit is directly NORTH of where I live; although it does help me find my way around town, I just look for the tall buildings and know which way I'm supposed to go. :)
