I am curious...my Dr. recently decided to put me on Femara and skipped Clomid all together. But I have 2 other friends that are having fertility issues and he started them on Clomid first. Does anyone know how the 2 compare? I know Femara has less side effects and lower risks of multiple babies, but is it stronger in any way? Just trying to understand why he started me on Femara instead. "JuliaRose...That's Scary" I have read a lot of your posts and you seem very knowledgeable on this...any ideas? :dunno:

One of clomid's s/e is a thinning of the uterine lining. If you have had issues - or it is believed you MAY have issues - with a thinner than optimal lining, you would be given femara over clomid. Hope that helps!

Yes it does help. During my last Dr. visit (1 week ago), the sonogram showed that my uterine lining was less than half of what it should have been considering I was due to ovulate any day. So apparently, I hadn't/wasn't ovulating still. He decided that visit the plan is to take Femara for 2 months. If that doesn't work, then we move on to IUI. Thanks for the reply...I appreciate it.

For what it may be worth... I was told by my Dr. a while back, when I was on Femara, that it is a drug that indeed has lower risks of multiple babies. However, the best trade of it is that it makes you produce better quality eggs... in other words you get quality over quantity!

Thanks!!! That is exactly what I keep hearing. I just keep thinking how great it is that the drug that has the least amount of side affects also gives you the best quality of eggs. Hope it does what we need it to do.:crossfing

I've heard (from someone on BOLU) that femera is banned now (in Canada at least). Anyone know anything about that (Suzi??)???

I do know (go figure). It is not "banned" but the off-label use of Femara has been cautioned against. This cautionary indication results from a study that shows three times the incidence of birth defects in women who take Femara while PG (um...DUH!! You are NOT supposed to take Femara while PG!). In other words, the study is putting the horse before the cart. Femara can't cause birth defects if you aren't PG but you can't be PG if you have to use Femara to force ovulation.
This information is nothing new. It is my guess that the recent study results showed a statistically significant difference in birth defects and suddenly it's big news. The problem is, the cited study links an increased risk of birth defects when PG women take Femara and when Femara is used for OI, the woman is not PG (this is not rocket science).
End result...the study is a lot of hoo-ha about nothing.

I have been trying to conceive for 15 long months. I found out I had PCOS and wanted to start conceiving immediately. My OB put me on Clomid. I did ovulate on it but she still increased the dose. I stayed on it for 11 months. Not one time conceiving. I had all the tests done and everything was coming back normal. Finally I was referred to a fertility doctor. He started me on Glucophage. I took this for 2 1/2 months before finally starting a period. I heard about Femara on the internet and asked him to put me on it. This was my third month on Femara and IM PREGNANT!! I just found out yesterday. Femara is really a wonder drug. My doctor told me that Clomid thins out your uterine lining and for me since I was on it for so long I hardly had any left. So even if the egg and sperm were meeting the fertilized egg had no where to bury itself. It makes sense. I almost gave up hope on conceiving for now. I was going to take a break and try again in a year and here out of the blue finally I am pregnant. I read something on the internet a while back that really kept my spirits high. It said that for every prayer to God he has 3 answers...1.YES 2. Not yet 3.I have something bigger and better for you in store. This made me realize that God hadnt fogot about me, it just wasnt my time yet. Good luck to everyone I hope you get the miracles you deserve.
