View Full Version : Wahoo! I have a job interview!
AahRee October 13th, 2005, 01:30 PM And it's actually for a job I'd want! Our little local weekly newspaper advertised for a reporter/editorial assistant, and I have an interview for the job tomorrow. It's part-time, and is kind of a job share between the managing editor and whoever she hires. And this paper is so small that the managing editor and two other people do ALL the writing. So, I'd get to do a little bit of everything - writing, editing, photography, layout, etc. Too fun! Journalism was my major in college (well, until my last quarter... long story... but I essentially did the Journalism program), and this would be such a fun way to get back into it!
Mandi October 13th, 2005, 01:35 PM How exciting, Anne! I hope that the interview goes well and you're hired right away. :)
Darcy October 13th, 2005, 01:37 PM How wonderful! I worked for a newspaper right out of school, and now I'm stuck in the wonderful world of books. Best of luck!
lizziebeth October 13th, 2005, 02:49 PM That's great Anne. It sounds like the kind of place where you'd get to do interesting things quickly because it's so small. I used to be an editorial asst on a magazine and it's great fun. I hope your interview goes well!
Melissa October 13th, 2005, 03:25 PM Good luck on your interview!

Shannon, I'm still *under consideration* for Boeing (I guess they're taking forever to *consider* people, because of the recent strike?), and I decided that it would be better to wait a year to apply for law school. :)
Bridget October 15th, 2005, 12:25 AM Cool! Then we'll be working in the same industry (except I'm magazines). How did it go? And it's actually for a job I'd want! Too fun! AahRee October 15th, 2005, 04:02 PM It went really well, I think. I definitely clicked with the woman I interviewed with. She's the Managing Editor, and the job I would have would be the Assistant Editor, and between the two of us, we'd be entirely responsible for the content of the paper. :faint: And we'd both be part-time! But that's what they're doing now, and it sounds like it's working well. The guy who is leaving is moving on to a full-time job with a daily, so that's pretty cool. :) I'd be working mostly Thursday and Friday afternoon/evenings, and Saturdays, but would have to be available to do interviews at other times, if necessary. Katie has preschool Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so I'd have some time built in to those days for interviews, etc., if I needed it. They are using Macs, and I have a Mac laptop, so I could actually bring my own computer and sit in the coffee shop next door if I wanted to go in earlier on Thursday and Friday. (The office is really small and there aren't enough computers for everyone to be there at the same time, but bringing my own would solve that problem, and I love coffee... ) The Managing Editor (Jennifer) started working there six years ago, when she had her daughter, so she *gets* the whole working mom thing, which is nice.
I think it would be a really fun job, and the hours would be great for me. There are no medical benefits, which is a bummer, but I didn't expect any with part-time. And the pay would probably be pretty low, but I would have almost no commuting expenses (I can literally walk to the office from my house), and would probably have absolutely no daycare expenses. So, continuing to pay for health care isn't a bad trade off.
She's interviewing one other person on Monday, and will go from there, so who knows? They could be interviewing some retired NYT reporter or something like that, and I could be totally SOL. But I think I did as well as I could, and if it's where I'm meant to be, it will work out. :)
marcy October 15th, 2005, 07:06 PM Sounds like the job is perfect for you! How cool that you're within walking distance, and that they are flexible with your schedule.

Joan November 1st, 2005, 01:37 AM I'm kind of late but wanted to say congratulations! Have you started? How do you like it? It sounds exciting!
Kaybee711 November 1st, 2005, 07:08 AM Yeah when do you start?
AahRee November 2nd, 2005, 12:59 PM I've been there for almost two weeks now, and have put out two newspapers. So far, I love it! I did most of the layout by myself this past week, and then the managing editor did corrections.... and there were lots. But that's to be expected the first time I do it myself, I think. :dunno: If you want to see the paper, we're actually online, at www.lakestevensjournal.com
So far, I've covered a school board meeting about drugs on campus, a presentation by a ghosthunter, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of a new street extension, a musical in downtown Seattle (Sweeney Todd) and a pumpkin-carving contest, and I'm working on stories about a new Wal-Mart going in nearby (and the community reaction to that), a program called *Reading with Rover*, where kids who struggle with reading can read aloud to dogs to help build their confidence, and something for Veteran's Day about the local guys who are serving in Iraq. So, lots of fun, small-town news.
The hours are perfect for me, because I can pretty much go in when I want to, as long as I get the job done. I've been going in on Thursday afternoons, Friday afternoon/evenings, and most of the day Saturday, and then working from home on my stories whenever I have time during the rest of the week. Everyone I work with is so, so nice. I'm so, unbelievably lucky!
Dennis November 2nd, 2005, 01:52 PM That's awesome!
AmyLynn November 2nd, 2005, 02:04 PM Sounds perfect!!! Glad it's working out!!
