View Full Version : What should a Toddler Boy for Fall wardrobe look like?

I've bought a bunch of stuff for Brandon but I'm trying to get organized.

What should a toddler wardrobe look like?

(I have accepted that the guidelines that are posted here will not apply to girls- for Lauryn, I buy what I like. For Brandon, I'll have to buy what he really needs. Is that discrimination or what! )

Tell me what you have and how much your have in the following categories (or feel free to add more!)

-Pants (jeans, cords)
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared)
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things)
-Sweatsuits
-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need?
-Socks
-Shoes
-Pajamas

Kincaid right now has 4 pairs of mix and match pants and 4 pair of gymbo pants that match particular lines. His pants are 2 jeans, 1 pair of khakis, 1 pair of black cords...then red baron jeans, jacks garage jeans, and khakis from that rocket ship boys line last year and the orange cutie pie jeans.
He has 5 sweaters and 10 long sleeved t-shirts to wear with the above pants.
He has 15 1-piece rompers, I think 4 of them are short sleeved/long pants and 11 long sleeved.
He has 2 sweat suits (coat, pants, onesie),
2 overall outfits (overalls with matching onesie) 3 pairs of overalls and 6 solid coloured onesies/shirts that mix and match.
He has a light spring jacket like thing (the sliver one from cutie pie), 2 pullover sweatshirts, and I plan on buying him a winter coat and a snowsuit.

I have no clue how many jammies or socks he has...Janelle and Caid are basically the same size (she is 1 inch taller and he is 3lbs heavier) so they share these.

I really feel like I'm missing something, but I have no clue what.

I'm curious also about how many clothes a little guy really needs :) Since he my one and only, Benjamin gets pretty much everything that I like :) My problem is sizing....I basically have a wardrobe of clothes for him in 12-18 months for early fall/winter and another in 18-24 months for late winter/early spring...anyone else buy two sizes? I actually have about a dozen pairs of jeans/khakis/cords/etc for him, but the sizes range from 12-18 all the way to 3T (that were given to us). Same goes for tops...

Same for me - my fall/winter stuff is all the same. I don't have the problem of two sizes in one seasons... luckily for me! This winter I'm buying Caleb 3T although my problem is too long pants that will probably have to be hortened.

-Pants (jeans, cords) I think about 12-15 pair, mostly jeans/specialty denim, but a few pairs of soft cotton pants from BabyStyle that fit him well. I buy him some french denim pants that have some funkier prints, but he also has plain denim. Also a couple pair of khakis, although I haven't bought these yet for winter.
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared) He'll wear his summer SS shirts until it cools off, then I typically have about 20 LS shirts for winter - most are interchangeable, but about 5 generally are matchy matchy only with specific pants. I tend to buy more throughout the winter on sale so he'll probably end up with more. But at least 15-20 is my base. About 6-8 of these are turtlenecks or mock turtlenecks.
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things) none, except for a rain jacket
-Sweatsuits none
-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need? 2 vests, including one reversible one from Hannah, plus generally 2-3 jackets coats (inncludes one or two lightweight fleece coats/jackets, a dressier coat like a pea coat and a puffy down-style heavy coat)
-Socks OMG don't make me answer - I have a sock fetish. 2 dozen is probably a good number.
-Shoes Two pair of sneakers, Three pairs of boots (two black and one brown) and one pair of beige bucks.
-Pajamas 6 pair of fleece footy pjs plus about 12 pair of LS and long pant cotton pjs
-sweaters Only one so far, because he hates sweaters and gets too far. So I bought him a super fancy one from Skelagamink for the holidays.

I'll probably buy him a dressy outfit for the holidays, plus I know my mom is buying him something along this line, too.

Holy cow! SOme of you guys have quite a stash for your little guys!

-Pants (jeans, cords) Aaron has 2 pair of khakis, 2 pair of jeans and various other pants (knit pants, sweatpants, etc)
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared) I think he has about 12 shirts total.
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things) He has one pair of TCP windpants. They're really heavy though so he doesn't wear them much.
-Sweatsuits He has 1 which is a long sleeve onesie deal with matching pants. He has 3 other pairs of sweats and about 3 sweatshirts.
-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need? He has one coat that has a zip out fleece lining. Both can be worn alone and then put together to make one coat. It's great! He also has a heavy down coat for winter, along with a pair of snowpants. I haven't tried on his snowsuit (bunting) from last year but my guess is that it's too small.
-Socks Oh geez...who knows? Maybe 20 pair?
-Shoes One pair of brown bucks, one pair of tennis shoes, and one pair of boots.
-Pajamas 5 sets of light cotton top/bottoms and 2 fleece sleepers with feet.
-Sweaters He has 3 sweaters and 3 sweater vests.

I am still in the process of completing Jackson's fall/winter wardrobe. I work p/t at BabyGap, so I have been waiting for things to go on sale before buying. I am accumulating slowly rather than dropping a ton of cash at the beginning of the season like last year and being tired of everything by February. So, for now he has:

-Pants (jeans, cords) 2 pairs khakis (1 dark, one light), 1 pair zip off khakis left over from the summer (the kind that are both pants and shorts), 1 pair jeans, 2 pairs cords

-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared) a bunch of ss left over from the summer, 2 new ss polo shirts (got b/c they were $1.97 each plus my discount - don't usually buy new ss shirts this late), 6 long sleeved t-shirts.

-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things) none

-Sweatsuits 2, but they were birthday gifts from last year that now finally fit him, I also have 2 sweatshirts that don't have matching pants.

-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need? 2 vests, and 1 nice dressy coat (all were gifts from last year), 1 jacket/snowpants (from last year, I think they will still fit)

-Socks none yet, his ones from last year still fit

-Shoes 1 pair sneakers

-Pajamas just bought 2 new sets on sale, but he still has about 6 pairs from last year that still fit

The next things to get him are a couple more pairs of shoes, 1 that could be dressy and another pair of sneakers, and a fleece jacket (he lived in his last year). He'll also get a couple nicer outfits for the holidays, and a nice collared shirt for his 2 year old pictures. Once it snows, he'll need snow boots too. Thats all I can think of for now.

our wardrobes are similar to what others are posting (too lazy for me to actually type out  )

I will say that I REALLY like having the winter coats w/ the zip-out fleece liner. That way, you dont need a separate fall coat, and the fleece coat is perfect for the car. We just add the shell when it comes to going outside in the snow and playing.

Ethan is 2.5 and this is what he has:

Pants (jeans, cords) He has 4 pairs of jeans, 4 pairs of cargo type pants in different colors, 1 pair of black cords, 1 pair of blue cords, 3 fleece type pants and 3 pairs of sweatpants

-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared) He probably has about 20 long sleeved t shirt type shirts, 6 long sleeved button down, 7 sweaters, 2 fleece vests, and about 8 sweatshirts/fleece to match the previous pants.

-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things) a total of 6 outfits for this.

-Sweatsuits see above

-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need? Ethan has 2 winter coats, one nice and one play. He also has 2 fleece pullovers.

-Socks about 20 pairs : 10 white and about 10 pairs to match his outfits.
-Shoes 2 pairs.. tennis and casual shoes
-Pajamas probably about 10 pairs

I'm learning more about dressing up a boy- I guess it's just like dressing up DH!

Everything basic
Seasonless
Fewer shoes but they are more expensive than the girl counterparts

I've never counted Lauryn's stuff but I've found myself counting Brandon's clothes. I buy DH's clothes and I can always feel when I've bought enough. Lauryn and my clothes are never enough. So if son follows father....

Karri-- where can I get a coat like you're talking about (sounds like the Gymbo 4 in 1 but for boys?)

I can't believe how many sets of pajamas people buy. I think Joe has 2 pairs for each season, he might have had 3 for summer. And the same for Frances. They wear the same pair for a week because they never get dirty.

Dennis - my kids eat breakfast in PJs, so they get dirty after one wear. Sometimes Aidan can squeeze 2 wearings out of his, but w/him, we have to worry about p/t accidents, so I need backups.

Lyndee - In the past, i've gotten the coats from Childrens Place (the outlet, actually), and I was quite pleased w/ how nice the coat was. Columbia sells them, as well. If you go to the nicer department stores in the childrens' dept, they usually have sales when the coats are marked down 40%. I got Aidan's last year. I dont remember the brand, though.

We are the same, we have breakfast in our pj's so after breakfast is done, I immediately strip them down, the pj's go in the laundry room and we head either to bath (depeding on if they go one the night before) or getting washed up and dressed.

Many of the clothes I buy Aiden are multi-season.Everything is about extending the life of the garment and wearing it more than 1 time, if I can help it. If I see something really cute, I usually will get it, but since Aiden SAH with me, I don't see the need for him to have a huge wardrobe.

-Pants (jeans, cords): 3 pair of jeans, 1 pair of khakis, 1 pair of "parachute type pants" from Gymbo - he also has some overalls - 1 pair of jeans and his khakis are convertible pants. They are the kind that zip off right under the knee.
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared): Right now, he has maybe 20 in all shirts short/long - but many of them he will be growing out of very soon, it seems. He has a few sweaters and a fleece hoodie I made for him. I usually layer him, because he seems to get hot. That and I can get away with shorter sleeve shirts (with undershirt) and a longer sweater/fleece over top.
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things): 1
-Sweatsuits: 1
-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need?: 1 down coat, 1 fleece coat, and 1 lighter weight coat
-Socks: 12 pair?
-Shoes: 1 pair, though he will perhaps get another pair of dressier shoes. Last year Stride Rite had a great shoe that was dressy/yet could be a sneaker. This year, his shoes are definitely sneakers.
-Pajamas: 2 pair.

I'm just starting to work on Jackson's fall/winter wardrobe. We are still have 100 degree weather so it's going to be a while before I need to crack down.

-Pants (jeans, cords): So far I have 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of cords, 1 pair of khakis and a couple pairs of knit pants. I still need probably 5 more pairs of pants. I don't want to go overboard since he will only wear this stuff for a few months. I get to go crazy with summer dressing.
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared): So far I just have 4 long-sleeved tops for him. I need to get my butt in gear with the tops though. I will need a lot more. We are a really casual family so there's no dressing up, no sweaters, etc.
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things): 1 pair of the windpants...just because they are smooth!
-Sweatsuits: None. Not necessary here in Phoenix
-jackets: He has a couple lightweight hoodies. I did get a winter jacket in an ebay lot from last year that still fits, but we don't have any weather that would warrant him wearing anything other than his Old Navy hoodies
-Socks: 12 pair (I think...2 packages of Hanes from WM)
-Shoes: 1 pair. I haven't bought him a pair of sneakers yet since we are still wearing sandals, but no need for boots or dress up shoes.
-Pajamas: None. Jackson doesn't wear pj's since he's a hot little guy...maybe a hanes undershirt once the weather cools down.

Wow...umm I know I said they share jammies...but I'd say we have about 5 nightgowns, 10 2-piece jammie sets, and 20-30 sleepers. I know that is a ton, but they sleep in 1 pair, then wake up and eat breakfast in that, then Caid gets a second pair for his nap (and sometimes Janelle wants to change into a pair of pjs then too) and then eats dinner in them, so they definitely all get dirty.

Yes. I've just started picking up a few 12-18 month fall/winter items cause at this rate it seems Kincaid is not going to grow into 18-24 till December...then I assume he will grow into 2t around July...so I'll need 2 spring/summer wardrobes as well for him. This is so so so different than Janelel who has never changed sizes in a season...I mean she has been in 12-18 since last october.

We just have 2 seasons here, winter and summer. Winter is wet and a little chilly. I really need to start buying Jakob clothes! He has 1 pr of pants and 1 pr overalls. He has 1 pr of shoes, 1 pr slippers, and 1 pr tevas. He has lots of shirts. Lately he has just been sleeping in a t-shirt.

I am lost in sizing right now as well!

Brandon has been consistently on the 50% percentile (not sure what his exact stats are right now). At almost 12 months, here's what we're dealing with on sizing:

- he has 3-6 month GAP jeans that fit perfectly,
- 6-12 month Old Navy pants that are a little short
- 9 month TCP pants that are too big.
- 9 month Carter's pajamas that are too short
- 12 month Carter's pajamas that are way too long

I'm buying a few pieces of Gymbo but I'm wondering if I should just stick with the 6-12 month pants because he can wear them right now. (they're bigger than Old Navy). The 12-18 mos are just huge and I really don't see them fitting into that in Gymbo until at least the Spring.

It was so different with Lauryn. She was one chunky baby and I always had to size up on everything. Weight-wise, Brandon has been tracking the same- or even a little heavier but he's lean and muscular- not round at all.

So do I just eyeball everything and ignore the sizing?

Nocona
October 5th, 2005, 10:43 AM
 that's what I do. Sizing is so screwed up. I don't know why every company can't use the same guidelines :complain:

So do I just eyeball everything and ignore the sizing?

This is why I want to bring Janelle with me for gymbucks redemption. I just make her try everything on. We ended up buying 3 pairs of Teachers Pet bottoms before finding one that would stay up (the brown kid girl cargos with the adjustable waist and ribbon belt that I can tie really tightly...but the legs have to be rolled up so far, she has about 3-4 inches to grow before they will actually fit in length). And she has clothing all the way from 12-18 months to size 3 from gymbo...and if you look at her closet it all looks basically the same size...her 12-18 hns sweater dress is bigger than her 2t FT sweater dress. It's just weird. I have no clue why sizes aren't standardized, at least within the company. I have a ton of 1 piece rompers for Caid for this winter, all of them 18-24, and someday I'll have to take a picture of his closet so everyone can see how crazy the length of these are...for all being the same size it is just ridiculous, some of them are a full 2inches longer than others.

Yep, Gymbo runs huge on Benjamin and he's no little thing. He's 15 months 32" and almost 26 lbs and the 12-18 months stuff I got LAST winter from Gymbo (before I knew how big it ran) just now fits good enough that it won't fall off/sag/etc. He'll still have lots of growing room in it all also. Same goes for any brand jeans, he just outgrew 6-12 months stuff. In tops, he's a solid size 18 months, as well as a 18 month in other brands of everything else.

What should a toddler wardrobe look like?

-Pants (jeans, cords) Jeans: 6 or 7 pairs(keep in mind I get A LOT of hand me downs from my cousin), cords: 2 pairs,
-Tops (short sleeve, long sleeve, collared) 10 (I need more though)
-Warm-up suits (windbreaker and windpants-type things) Jack has mostly lined track pants, 5 pairs
-Sweatsuits 4 pairs
-jackets (I'm lost on this one- what "types" does he need? Jack has too many jackets (again, hand me downs, my cousin is a shopaholic  ). He has 1 hooded sweat jacket, a track jacket, a lined rain jacket, a jean jacket, a fleece jacket, and a thermal lined jacket.
-Socks at least 10-15 pairs
-Shoes 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair dress shoes (never worn), I'll be getting him a pair of fall/winter shoes and a pair of snow boots
-Pajamas only 2 pairs at the moment but I'm getting him 2 pairs of blanket sleepers for the winter (he won't wear soks to bed or get under the covers)
