View Full Version : Who eats first? You or the guests?

Okay, to me, this is a no-brainer, but perhaps I'm in the minority? :dunno: I think it is always appropriate to ask my guests to get their food first before I will go or I will allow my family to get their food. Is this how you do it, or is it just a "first come, first serve" sort of thing?

My SIL & BIL *always* are the first ones at the table to get their food, regardless of if there are guests there or not. I personally think it is very rude to not allow the guests to go first. :dunno: Am I alone on this one?

I always have my guests eat first. Then I make my kids their plates and I eat last.

Depends on the situation...sometimes kids trump guests depending on how loud they are :) But in general I would have guests serve themselves (or I'd serve them, depending) first.

I agree with Jenn. Kids normally first, then guests. I'm always the last to eat, whether it's just us at home or we have guests.

NEVER myself first...I am always last. But like Jenn, kids usually trump guests. Once they see the food is ready, they want it

Usually kids, then guests with me last. Although I usually am last by the time I get my kids and dh taken care of and settled everyone is already eating and sometimes the food is gone so mom has to wait until the next meal or eat whatever the kids don't if we are at someone else's house or at a church function. If it is a church function then my philosophy is dessert first because that is usually all that is left for me.

With everyone else, kids usually, then guests, then me.

Guests, kids, me. Usually the kids are too busy playing to stop and eat, though I suppose it depends on how long they've been waiting for the food.

Guests, kids, then, if I'm lucky, me.

Depends on the situation.

If it is something like thanksgiving or christmas dinner or just a cookout with family (extended so usually like 30 or so people) then it is Guests, Kids, Me. If it is all of us at our fiends house..or at my house for that matter ..it is Kids, Guests, Me. Then if it is a birthday..it is that Birthday person..kids, guests me.

I am always last to eat. I take care of everyone else first. I think that is only right.

We all sit down together, say prayers, and eat together. I'd like to say that everyone eats at the same time but realistically we dish up the kids' plates first and then we eat. Seems I am always eating last because I am jumping up and down getting things we forgot.....When we have guests, we let the guests serve themselves while we are serving the kids (or if it's a buffet we make the kids' plates first and then let the guests get their plates). Either way, it's either DH or me who are last to eat....

Sometimes it seems like guests wait until the host or hostess fixes a plate. At least that's the way it seems to go in my house. I say "go, eat!" and they will all sit there until I start fixing something.

I usually take care of my child, and then me. Guests are on their own in my house and they know it.

What type of dinner is this? cookout, buffet? If it is a family style dinner, seated at a table, food is passed around and everyone serves themself. If it a cookout or buffet, I'd do kids, guests, then myself.

I would usually serve myself last. Guests vs. kids just depends on the situation. If I'm the guest, I would NEVER start eating until everyone was served. It's funny because my mom was always really, really strict about table manners growing up (we had family dinner every single night and we were required to have proper table manners or we were asked to eat in the kitchen). My in-laws have NO table manners which drives me crazy. Tom has learned better table manners from being around my family so now his family drives him crazy, too. (it's stupid things like waiting for everyone to be served to start eating, putting napkins in laps, etc.)

I totally agree. But I was assuming that this question was based on a buffet style? :dunno: Dont know why I assumed, but I did

Now sit down, yes. I let my guests serve themselves first. And I think its totally rude to start eating until everyone at the table had their plate in front of them w/ napkins in lap, etc.
