ok, I'm not American and I didn't go to High School here, so there's alot of stuff I'm not familiar with, like Homecoming. My 14yo son informed me this morning that he was voted Homecoming Prince for the Freshman class... what does that mean? He says a tux will be provided for him to wear at the dance, didn't know much else.

Is this a popularity or looks-based vote? or is it based on something else? What is usually associated with Homecoming, other than the football game and the dance? Do parents attend or is that horrifyingly embarrassing? Should I get all excited for him or... WHAT do I/we do???

He acted like it was no big deal and he didn't care when he told me and I don't know if he's just embarrassed or being a moody teenager (he's Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde lately). Please someone fill me in. TIA!

I have to know where you're from

In my high school I would say it's popularity based. Basically he'll just be part of the "homecoming court" and seniors will be voted the king and queen. I wouldn't say you'd have to be there for coronation (ours were during half time of the game) but it would be kind of neat to have pics in the future :dunno:

I'm from Puerto Rico, which is part of the US... but we do things differently there. No football (at least while I was living there up to 12 years ago), no proms and 9th grade is still middle school, not high school.

I'd like to go take pictures of him but I don't want him to be embarrassed by his parents :yippee: !

I'd say it's definitely a popularity contest....although as a freshman, it has much more to do with looks than with popularity. When I was in hs, by the time we were all seniors, the popular kids weren't necessarily the most beautiful....and vice-versa. So, our homecoming queen was a big overweight and not as pretty as some....but she was liked by everyone and SO nice. :)

As for what you guys should do...I'd definitely go to the football game and get some pictures. :) You can just sit in the stands and take the pictures without drawing attention to yourselves and you can get some great shots to keep as mementos. As for the dance....I wouldn't go within 100 yards of it! I think that's where the embarrassment factor could really come out.....a football game is more of a public place where parents are allowed to come out of their caves.

How very cool for your family to have this!! Post a picture later so we can all see your handsome young man. :)

Its popularity based here and panents can attend the dances to see the walks and crowning.

Where I went to hs, dance royalty was crowned in a school assembly during school hours.....then paraded around in convertibles at halftime during the football game (homecoming). The only stuff happening at the dance was dancing and making out. I honestly can't remember if any parents were present during the school assemblies....

We did all of ours at the football game, and also did the riding around in convertibles thing (how and when did that get started anyway? ). The dance was definitely kids only. The parents took photos like mad at the game though.

That's so cool that your son is in the court! Hooray for him! (and you!) :sunny:

So umm, does that mean you didn't go k-12 with the same group of kids?

Anyway, homecoming court was a popularity contest in our school. There was homecoming, snow fest, and prom courts...the boys wore tuxes, the girls formal dresses. There was 1 couple for homecoming/snowfest from the freshmen, sophomore, and junior class and 4 couples from the senior class. Then one girl and one boy (not necissarily one of the couples) are voted from the senior class to be king/queen, and get crowned and such.

Here in Oregon, homecoming is a BIG deal.
More of a popularity based thing, but the KIDS vote on who will be on homecoming court.
There is usually a whole ta-doo at the homecoming football game. They get to escort the homecoming princesses, be part of the half time football ceremony, etc.
I was part of the homecoming thing in high school. But ours was only for Seniors.
I think you should get excited for him. It means he is well liked by his peers. I'm sure he's a great kid and you should be proud of him.

I didnt. Our school system is divided weird. Each school has the kids split in half to go to different next level schools because of the way our districts are divided. Theres only 1 Jr High school for half of the town but two highschools for the kids to be split into. Once those kids go to their assigned highschool they are grouped with kids from lower towns. Those kids from the lower towns went to their own Middle/Jr High schools though.

It seems so much easier to have kids move from school to school with the same group of kids they've been with.

At my high school it was mostly popularity! There was always a 'prince and princess' from the fresh, soph and junior classes and then a whole 5 guys 5 girls court from the senior class and at half time at the homecoming game they did the whole riding on convertibles thing for the girls and then the guys were all escorted out by their moms!!..and the dads of the girls were waiting to help them out of the convertible... So yeah.. parents were definetly there and active at our homecoming game for all of that, but as for the dance.. no parents within a mile!! lol
Be happy for him though, he's probably just trying to play it cool you know! That's a pretty cool thing!..for a 14 yr old! :)

There were 3 towns (lake, lake george, and farwell) that went to my school...but there was only one school, farwell area schools, it was an elementary (k-4) a middle school (5-8) and a high school (9-12) and everyone was together the whole time. There were maybe 2-3 new kids every year at the start of school and 1-2 kids in the middle of the year, but the same number moved every year as well. Basically, the kids I went to kindergarten with were the same kids I graduated high school with, and there were very few exceptions.
