Hi I had a baby girl in June of 2005. Since then I've been on a spending spree with the clothes. I've found all kinds of clothes in different age ranges that I just couldn't resist :). I have even bought some size 6 things. What's the best way to store these items for safe keeping?

I am not sure if this is the best wat or not but I store my DD outgrown clothing in big rubbermaid containers.

I've been using those bags that you can vacuum seal them shut. It takes all the air out. I can't remember what they are called, but they were the ones you could buy on tv. I get them at Bed Bath and Beyond I think. They say you are supposed to open and air them out every 6 months.

I use the Rubbermaid containers too but they quickly overtake your storage unit... if you are buying ahead you might consider the vacuum packs! Brandi, I'm curious does it wrinkle the stuff up beyond belief? I figured just a good washing would take care of that.

I use big rubbermaid containers too. But I've been eyeing those "Space bags" I think they're called too. (Yes with little sleep comes watching waaaay too much late night television)

I keep all of DD's smaller clothes in storage bins but I have a bunch and they take up so much space. I might invest in those bags because if this baby is a girl and we are keeping DD's clothes, they're 2 1/2 years apart so I'll be storing clothes for a while. I think the bags are a great idea for bigger clothes, I have some up to size 6 and it will be years before DD gets into that size.

I use big plastic bins, some Rubbermaid, some other kinds... I have TONS of stuff and have been saving and reusing since 2002. I think they work great.

Thank you, I hadn't considered the sealed bags. I'll go take a look at Bed Bath and Beyond. I had heard not to store your clothes in plastic over a long period because it emits some sort of gas that will discolor your clothes. But I'm guessing they are talking about the thin plastic bags you get from the dry cleaners the vaccum sealed ones are a bit sturdier.

I think I've read that you're supposed to store them in cardboard boxes

That said, Rubbermaid containers here too. I've stored stuff in them for 3 years with no problems :aok:

Correct! Acid free cardboard boxes with acid free paper. Although - I would really only be concerned about that if you're thinking of storing things over a long period of time - like 5 years or more. http://www.dickblick.com/categories/conservation/

All plastic will emit gas over time - it's just how it's composed. As long as you go through the stuff every few months, take it out, let it breathe in the fresh air, you'd be okay, if you're really concerned.

My house is beginning to be overrun w/ rubbermaid tubs. Anyone using the space bags have an opinion on them? Do they really shrink down like they show?

I've used the space bags and they have been so so. It really does shrink the package a lot smaller but the air eventually seeps in. I've packed comforters in there only to find that they've grown again. I didn't find the wrinkling to be that bad at all.

I like to keep my stuff in those rectangular plastic bags with the zippers (like the comforters come in) and I label each bag. I think I got them from LNT. When I put Brandon's stuff away, I had one bag of 0-3 month clothing with all the other accessories- blankets etc. and then another for 3-6 months. That way, I can pass the bag to the next baby that comes along in the family and the whole thing is already in a "kit". I can keep stuff more organized in those because I can see better than the rubbermaid bins. I do love the rubbermaid bins though but I find them too heavy to put into the top shelves of our closet. These smaller bags are so much easier for me to take up and down.

I really haven't thought about the whole gas issue. Should I be concerned?

I use rubbermaid (actually sterilite) containers
