View Full Version : Odd family names?
Brooke February 4th, 2004, 04:56 PM I thought I'd post in this forum so that it's not empty!
What are the oddest names in your family history? Would you ever consider using any of them?
Brooke February 4th, 2004, 04:58 PM The most current odd name is my grandmother's name Glenna. I actually really do like it and I would consider using it.
Other odd names in our past -
Denton and Derwood - my grandfather's twin brothers
Fanny
Celia - which I also love, was my grandmother's mom
Daisy
Hilary February 4th, 2004, 05:00 PM My step dad's middle name is Vilas. We thought about using it with my 1st pregnancy, but since Madelynn was a girl we didn't. I've since decided that we probably won't use it.
Kate February 4th, 2004, 05:25 PM My mother's name is Erina.
My Uncle's name was Denton.
I have an Aunt Dymphna.
My Great Grandfather's name was Gaetano.
I have an Uncle Astro.
My brother's middle name is Laurien.
There are others but that is all that I can think of right now...
Jennifer February 4th, 2004, 05:32 PM My grandmother's name is Wrena and I have a cousin named Noranne. I like both of them but I doubt I'd use either.
Nocona February 4th, 2004, 05:38 PM All these are making my name look normal :rotflmao:
kim February 4th, 2004, 05:56 PM my grandmother's name was Innocenzia.
she went by 'elizabeth'
TtownAnne February 4th, 2004, 06:00 PM We have some doozies -
Aloysius (seriously - my godfather's middle name)
Bede (Catholic name, I believe it's one of the more obscure saints)
Augustus (not totally wierd, just not precisely common these days)
Cortney February 4th, 2004, 06:21 PM I'm sure I have a lot of weird names in family history, but the funniest is my dad's. He's named after his grandfather and his name is Kermit Todd. Needless to say, he goes by Todd.
sheila February 4th, 2004, 06:48 PM Lets see...
We have an Angus in the family. That one wasn't really under consideration, although Ithink its a cool name. We also have a couple Harrells as middle names--also never considered.
My niece is Winter (born in the summer) and she has a cousin Autumn (born in the spring).
and what's the other strange family name we have ..... oh yeah! That would be Stagg If we had (or have) a boy, he'll be Stagg.
(Nocona-- does that make you feel better? )
magoo February 4th, 2004, 08:12 PM I'm sure I have a lot of weird names in family history, but the funniest is my dad's. He's named after his grandfather and his name is Kermit Todd. Needless to say, he goes by Todd. When I first read that, I thought it said Kermit Toad. I guess it's the frog association with the name Kermit.
Sarah
Nichole February 4th, 2004, 09:02 PM The only strange one I can think of is my grandma's name: Ardelle Etta.
I like her middle name and have toyed with the idea of using it as a middle name if we have a girl. She told me it's short for Henrietta, who was her mother's good friend.
Bev February 4th, 2004, 09:53 PM Yay! A Baby Name section.
I was trying to figure out how to spell this! Aloysius I am not sure if it is a family name or not, but my Dad used to say it all the time. Maybe because he liked to say it, I don't know. Most of our weird names are on my Dad's side. And it is not their real names in most cases that are weird. They're maritimers, it explains a lot.
Angelorum Vinetta, she goes by Angie
Saraphina, she goes by Girlie
Kathleen, she was called Buttha by family members
Florence, goes by Babe
Alphonsus, he went by Fauncey or at least that's what my Dad says.
Malcolm, he went by Malkie
Cyril Miller, he goes by Cy (or Dad!) He hates Cyril. He claims his mom ran out of names and named him after the local priest after he visited her. This is entirely possible; she had 17 kids, 9 girls 8 boys. No multiples to my knowledge.
I guess that's enough by now.
Lette February 4th, 2004, 10:05 PM My Maternal Grandmother is Leona
My Paternal Grandmother was Bernadine.
My mom is Alma.
I was going to use Nadine as my 2nd daughters middle name, but she turned out to be a boy.
olcott February 4th, 2004, 10:07 PM Nothing too off the wall..my mom's parents were Lucille and Charles
Lucille's parents were Alfred & Anna...Alfred's brothers and sisters were Anton (went by Tony), Fred, Elnora, Lenora and Elmer...Anna had a half-brother named Ervin
Charles's parents were Ray & Christine..thats about all I know about them
Dad's parents were Earl & Edith, although I do love my grandpa's middle name, Henning
We also have the names Agnes, Emma, Gladys, Vernon, Cash, Melva, and Mac in our family
My stepmom's mom's name is Kitty :)
Cazzle February 4th, 2004, 10:11 PM We have a Bede as well, Anne. Ours became a priest. He had a brother named Max Ignatius. Nan and her siblings used to call him Maximacius Ignatius when they were kids, and she giggles like a little girl when she thinks about it to this day :)
My great great grandmother was not named on her birth certificate, but a letter written by her brother when she was a child refers to her as Arlette (which is a real name). As an adult, she went by Harlettie or Harlette (harlot?!), and her name was frequently misspelt on official documents, including such variations as Haslett and Charlottie.
My earliest known ancestry includes ladies named Sybble (Cybil) and Honor (surname Pett), and a man named Pascho. My German line includes a gentleman named Wanzy.
I have various and sundry relatives named: Denby, Ede, Hedwig, Enis, Euphemia, Hanorah, Elvira (she's DH's step mother), Hulda, Jacquab, Lysander, Pin, Melba, Merridy, Ordenea, Otter, Purdie, Rendelle, Shavorn, Slade, Vance, Willoughby
When relatives used their maiden names as their children's middle names, you ended up with some odd sounding middle names, such as Dunwoodie, Groombridge and Leyland.
TtownAnne February 4th, 2004, 10:45 PM Mine was a priest too! :) My great-great-uncle was a Norbertine priest. Everyone in the family called him "Boy". :dunno:
~Anne
We have a Bede as well, Anne. Ours became a priest.
Barb February 5th, 2004, 12:34 PM My grandmother and her twin sister were Beulah and Eulah. Their other siblings were Layla, Cecil and Ferne. My mom's name is Ada, not bad but very old fashioned. DH's grandmother is Marceline Eugenie (she goes by Marcy).
Nanley February 5th, 2004, 04:31 PM My DH is Ulreh (pronounced yool-ree) John, as is his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather. He either goes by Ulreh or Utz, which is apparently the traditional German nickname for that name.
As for whether I'd use it, well, Ulreh John (the fifth, who we call John) is sleeping on my shoulder now. :)
Kate
Isaiah's Momma February 5th, 2004, 05:29 PM The most current odd name is my grandmother's name Glenna. I actually really do like it and I would consider using it.
Thats odd  Its my moms first name, I guess I never thought of it as odd, but then my name is Naomi so?
My grandfathers name is Harper and my dads midle name is Eugene
JillMelissa February 6th, 2004, 09:47 AM We have very normal, boring names in my family. DH is Charles Augustus which sounds like the king of England, though... That is one that is definitely not being passed down if I have anything to do with it!
Brooke February 6th, 2004, 09:58 AM Thats odd  Its my moms first name, I guess I never thought of it as odd, but then my name is Naomi so?
My grandfathers name is Harper and my dads midle name is Eugene
That's funny! We've never met another Glenna. Just Glenda's.
I love the name Harper, but I would use it for a little girl.
AmyP February 9th, 2004, 02:01 PM Great Aunts - Carmela (Millie) and Antoinette (Dolly), DH has a great great aunt (I think) named Eujaney (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong, pronounced you-JANE-y), she went by Jenny.
I don't plan on using any of those.
My grandmother's name was Lois - not exactly strange, but hardly common. I want to use it for a middle name for a future daughter, but DH doesn't.
My grandfather's name was Salvatore - common if you're Italian! He was the first born in America on that side.
mommytheresa February 9th, 2004, 02:13 PM The only one I can think of is my aunt whose name is Fontella. And no I would never use that name!
Kate February 9th, 2004, 03:20 PM Some other ones that I remembered recently... My Great Aunt's name was Santa. My Grandfather's name was Silvio and my Grandmother's name was Paulmina.
Sarah D February 10th, 2004, 04:08 PM Grandmother - Ruby
Grandfather - Elvis
Great Grandfather - Maynard Alvernise
SarahK February 13th, 2004, 09:32 PM My family is so boring!!
happysmileylady February 13th, 2004, 09:57 PM Ok, so I don't mean to laugh but...
I find it really funny that the two names my dad use to call us when he was mad or slap happy are here. Maynard and Aloysius.
We don't have too many weirdo names in our family. Neither does DH now that I think about it. But, I am sure if I go through my family history, I might find some.
Alysia February 16th, 2004, 07:09 PM Not really many weird names in our family... Though my uncle's middle name is Apollinaire (Im not sure I spelled it right.. but I think it translates to William)
DH's Grandma is Ethel Merle and goes by Merle. I know its not weird but I think its a god awful combination!
Becky February 17th, 2004, 09:40 AM we have a couple....
my great grandfather was elmer elsworth...married beaulah love (love was the last name)...bealah's brothers were beaul and danvers coe (dontcha think if you used beaulah you would rule out beaul for the next child???)
there are two people named Zenus on my mom's side (not sure of the relation)
two of my mom's cousins both have "elizabeth" as a middle name...not unusual, but the second sister got it cause the dad forgot he'd already used it! maybe that's why men don't take care of those things as much any more!
Nadine February 19th, 2004, 06:45 AM I was going to use Nadine as my 2nd daughters middle name Great name! :)
My DH is Ulreh (pronounced yool-ree) John, as is his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather. He either goes by Ulreh or Utz, which is apparently the traditional German nickname for that name.
As for whether I'd use it, well, Ulreh John (the fifth, who we call John) is sleeping on my shoulder now. :)
KateKate, do u mean Ulrich maybe? Never heard the name Ulreh before. (But that doesn't mean a thing...)
OK, I know that lots of Hebrew/Yiddish names sound strange in advance.
But we DO have tons of names that are funny.
My paternal g-father was called Lippa YomTov (dunno about lippa but Yomtov means holiday).
Then we have Tcharna who is DHs great-grandmother (=black).

Cazzle February 20th, 2004, 06:05 AM DH has a great great aunt (I think) named Eujaney (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong, pronounced you-JANE-y), she went by Jenny.Possibly Eugenie - that's the name of one of Queen Elizabeth II's grandchildren (Fergie and Andrew's younger daughter). It's certainly unusual!
I just recalled my great uncle Jack, whose given name was John Eclipse because he was born during an eclipse. I think that's kind of cool
TtownAnne February 20th, 2004, 08:41 AM Oooooh, I have loved the name Solange ever since I read it in Gone With the Wind! (Scarlett's grandmother's name was Solange)
Solange - my grandma

Just thought of another one... and it's my dads (how could I not think of this?!?)

Nanley March 1st, 2004, 04:35 PM Great name! :)
Kate, do u mean Ulrich maybe? Never heard the name Ulreh before. (But that doesn't mean a thing...)
No, it's definitely Ulreh. I do think it's probably a variant of Ulrich, but they've spelled it Ulreh for 5 generations. What can I say--DH's family is kinda strange. :)
Kate

DH's grandfather was Bendix.
koalita April 27th, 2004, 11:08 PM I've also not known anyone else named ... Murray.
 Here I was thinking my family didn't have many unusual names... My dad's name is Murray Bernard (no we're not using either).
My grandfather on my mom's side was named Herman Eugene (went by Gene)
He was named after his father Orange Herman (went by Herman)
who was named after his father Orange ? (went by Orange)
I think Orange is the weirdest name... It's a color, not a name!

Betty (ok, very normal, this is my grandma)
Leon
Neil (again, normal)

Avis (I really wanted to name Janelle Avis...but dh said no)
My grandpa's family only had a couple odd names, and I think just cause my great grandma ran out of names...
Great grandma's name is Pearl (I wanted this to be Janelle's middle name, she would of been Avis Pearl, but again, DH said no)
her kids...
Elma (she went by red)
Ernest (he, my grandpa, went by Dan)
Richard (dick)
Ronald (ronnie)
Kathryn (kate)
Nelson (butch
Ruth
Laurel
Vesta
After that generation though (except laurel's kids had some weird names, but there were 14 of them!) I think I'm the first one to use a not "normal" name with Kincaid...
