View Full Version : Law school: apply now, or wait a year?

I'm in the process of applying for a couple of full-time jobs, and my major incentive for applying for them isn't the cash, it's the fact that the employer (Boeing) pays for education. Any education. I was starting the process of applying to law schools when we found out we were pg with Katie, and although plans obviously changed dramatically, I'd still love to go. However, I don't want to take out student loans now (not worth it, because it would force me to work the kind of job that I DON'T want - long hours, law firm, blech.) I want to work somewhere that is more family-friendly (which usually means less $$$) so I don't want to have to worry about paying off school. Soooo.... I've applied for a few Office Assistant jobs that might make this possible. I just applied and have no idea if I'll even get interviewed for them, so it seems a little premature to be applying to law school at this point. But, since now is the time to do it if I want to go next fall, I'm wondering if I should just go for it and hope that I get one of these jobs? Or should I wait until I have the job, and then apply?
If I do apply, it will only be to one school. I won't be able to go full-time, so University of Washington is out. Seattle University is the only school in the area with a part-time program, so it's that or nothing.

I say apply. (and good for you!)

You never know what could happen... you could win the lottery, some scholarship could fall in your lap, grants, etc. Even if you don't end up taking the job and you get in, you could defer for a year or two without having to worry about getting in later on.

I agree with the others!

And good for you, Anne. I think that's wonderful! :)

My sister has been prepping to take the LSAT's in a few mos (next Feb, I think?) as she's really wanting to try to get into a law school too. :)

I wish you luck. :)

Thanks, everyone! I already did the LSATs (which are no fun - Dawn, wish your sister tons of luck and send her my sympathies!), so I just have the actual application to do. And dummy that I am, I didn't even consider that I could probably defer for a year if I needed to. :duh: So, yeah... I think I'll be applying now. :) Thanks for all the good luck wishes, and I'll definitely keep you all posted. :hug99:

I"ll be sure to tell her. I know she's already prepared to expect the worse, no matter how many of the 'prep LSATs' she takes! She's heard from lots of people (including lawyers themselves who she befriended who wants to 'help her along the way', etc.) how awful the LSAT's are....but she's determined. :) She really wants to do this (she decided recently about 6 mos. ago that she wants to do law school instead of graduate school). [She gets her bachelors this Dec., I believe, in a double major]

Good for you Anne on such a job well done! What a great feeling that the LSAT's are done and over with and it's just a matter of :crossfing: in getting into a law school. I wish you all the luck! :)

Hey Anne! Just wanted to wish you much luck with the application process! I think working for Boeing and having them pay for law school is a brilliant idea! The law school student loans are exactly what's been keeping me from applying! No thank you!
