View Full Version : So tell me about consignment shops....

I went to a high-end consignment shop today since I've been seeing the cool things people have been getting.

I found a Hanna playdress in Lauryn's size. They were selling it for $15 but to me it looked so faded! I decided I'd rather buy new. I guess if it was cheaper than that I would have reconsidered but a lot of the other Hanna dresses were $25-$30. Not bargains at all. I found a few Gymbos but I wasn't willing to pay $10 for faded leggings either.

So what have you found that has been so great?

Also, has anyone sold at consignments? How does that work?

TIA!

I found the red and white polka dot ladybug (from the ladybug line) romper at OUAC for 4.99, Janelle wore it this summer untill she was potty trained then I sold it on ebay for $11. I also found a pair of giraffe gymmies for 1.99 that caid wore for about 9 months then I sold them for 5.99. But usually I end up going there with a specific purpose (jammies, 1-piece rompers for caid, matching shoes for an outfit just for pictures, etc) and end up finding nothing else in the store I could possibly want...it's definitely hit or miss.

I used to sell Janelle's old clothes there cause it is much less of a hassle than e-bay, but they bough like 150 outfits from me one time and I got $200 for them, I would of done MUCH better on e-bay, and maybe even at a garage sale...so we quit doing that.... Though, I have 6 rubbermaid totes full of clothes I really need to get listed by the end of the month, and if i don't we might take them in just to get rid of it all. If you get your money in store credit they give you a 25% off your total purchase coupon to use...so that's nice if you can find anything you'd want to buy.

We tried selling to consignment shops and it was a joke. They had so many rules - you had to make an appointment (with totally inflexible times), everything had to be on hangers, they only took certain brands, etc. We weren't going to waste our time with it.

It might be a regional thing because my SIL (in New Jersey) told us she sells to a consignment shop all the time and doesn't have to deal with any of that BS. She just brings a bag of clothes in any time and they go through it and pay her for what they want.

We have a fairly decent consignment shop here. They sell better quality items at decent prices. For example, there was a CUTE baby Lulu dress for $12, looked almost new. All the onesies are $1 (all brands!). They also sell toys, strollers, and other equipment.

Selling was a slight hassle. I had to make an appointment which was 2 weeks away. I went ahead and she gave me about $25 for a bunch of clothes. I didn't sell there again, just decided to give away most of the clothes and will try to sell on ebay. I do shop there though!

I'm going to a resale shop tomorrow with the clothes I've been cleaning out of the kids closet. I had to make an appt, but I made it tonight for tomorrow morning. They do them every half an hour on Mondays. So it wasn't a hassle. They have a kids play corner for the monkeys to play in while I shop. I've had really good luck with them.

I'll be selling the gymboree stuff myself on ebay. I also kept some things for a couple friends who are pregnant with girls. Otherwise it all goes to the resale shop. They do 40% cash, 60% trade. And they always have great stuff, so I'll probably use it for fall clothes for the kids.

Ok, so I just got back from the resale shop. I have to say I am completely baffled by what they took and how much they gave me and what they gave me back.

I took in 2 big boxes. They took about 1/2 of one box, and gave me back some of the best stuff in there. AND they paid me $68 for the CRAP that they took.

So I'm lost. I guess I can list some of this stuff on ebay like I had planned but was being lazy just going to the resale shop.

Oh and get this, I used it as a store credit and got some incredible gymbo stuff for the girls. They were all WAY under priced. $14 for a fall gymbo coat from last fall with a matching hat in brand new condition.

Jillian if you have any boys stuff in 9-12mths, I might be interested, but I think Caid is in that size? No?

It's definitely hit or miss and it sounds like the place you went to, Lyndee, is WAY overpriced.

They don't pay squat when they are buying from you so I won't sell them anything I think I can get some good $$ out of :)

Consignment shops here run a little differently. You're not paid when you bring the items in, you're paid half of what they sell for. So you're given a number, all of your clothes are marked with that number and when one of your items sells, they add it to your tab, at any time you can come in, check your tab and they'll cut you a check.
If something doesnt sell by the end of the season, I just go in and pull it off the rack (granted my aunt owns the shop that i consign in so she's pretty lenient with me).
