View Full Version : Maryland
Rochelle February 1st, 2004, 08:04 PM Anyone from MD around? We live in Baltimore County. We'll have lived here 2 years in June. We moved from New England and really miss it. Anyway, I just thought it'd be nice to get to know some others from the area.
TtownAnne February 1st, 2004, 10:46 PM I'm in Maryland - Carroll County to be precise! :) I'm sorry you're not quite happy here yet.
Rochelle February 2nd, 2004, 05:48 AM :wavey: Anne. It's a very difficult adjustment. We have my family here but no friends (other than the people I work with) so it's quite hard to "like" it here.
Thanks for coming by!
TtownAnne February 2nd, 2004, 08:38 AM Where in Baltimore County do you live? Have you made any friends in the neighborhood yet?
Brooke February 2nd, 2004, 09:02 AM Hi! I'm in northern Anne Arundel County, near BWI airport.
AmyP February 2nd, 2004, 09:15 AM I live in Baltimore County, in Rosedale (about fifteen minutes from White Marsh).
Rochelle February 2nd, 2004, 10:40 AM I live in Owings Mills. No! We haven't made any friends in the neighborhood and it's weird because we all moved in around the same time (new development) and there are tons of kids around. :dunno: I just find it hard to meet people down here, everyone seems so concerned with themselves. Maybe it's just my perception. I'd really like to get to know some people, especially with kids so my son has kids to play with.
:wavey: Brooke & Amy!
TtownAnne February 2nd, 2004, 02:22 PM I will direct Marcie to come see this thread - she lives in Owings Mills too, although her daughter is a bit younger than her son (I think Amelia is 8 or 9 months?) And I live in Carroll County, which is straight out 140 from you. Maybe the three of us should arrange a girls' night out soon!
Rochelle February 2nd, 2004, 02:40 PM Oh that would be nice! My mom lives in Reisterstown, I think that's closer to you isn't it?
TtownAnne February 2nd, 2004, 03:18 PM Only slightly. I live about 30 miles from Owings Mills, and about 25 from Reisterstown. :)
Brooke February 2nd, 2004, 04:29 PM I'm 30 minutes from Owings Mills, but in the opposite direction from Anne!
Hey, we're having Rebekah's birthday party on Saturday. Anne and Caroline are coming. So are Heather (hlj825 on UB) and her daugher Maddy. If you'd like to come meet us, you're more than welcome. There will be 6 toddlers ranging from just turned 1 up to almost 3 years old. Plus 3-4 older kids (ages 8-14) to help out. It'll be a full house but the more the merrier!
Rochelle February 2nd, 2004, 04:56 PM  Anne, I guess I always thought Taneytown was closer, we had considered moving there when we were looking for houses.
Brooke, thanks for the invite! I'd love to come, but my niece's bridal shower is this weekend and we're going to NJ for it.
Erika February 3rd, 2004, 08:11 AM hi! :) I am from Maryland also. We live in Columbia. I know how you feel - we moved here in the summer of 2001 from NJ and it took me a long time to adjust. I still don't know a ton of people just a few from work and my development. But I am like it more and more as time passes and it is starting to feel like home :)
Rav77 February 3rd, 2004, 01:24 PM I live in Pasadena. Erika Where are you going to deliver at ??
Rochelle February 3rd, 2004, 01:39 PM :wavey: Erika, I saw on UB that you're being induced soon! Good luck!
hi! :) I am from Maryland also. We live in Columbia. I know how you feel - we moved here in the summer of 2001 from NJ and it took me a long time to adjust. I still don't know a ton of people just a few from work and my development. But I am like it more and more as time passes and it is starting to feel like home :)
JillMelissa February 6th, 2004, 11:17 PM I know I don't count since I don't live there anymore  but I grew up in Columbia. My parents and my younger brother still live there. I sure miss it!
seansmommy February 20th, 2004, 10:42 PM I grew up in Columbia, too. Well, Ellicott City, but pretty much the same difference. I loved it there...nowhere else feels quite as "homey." I was in Owings Mills (in New Town) right before we got married about 3 years ago. We're now about an hour away in Virginia, but we make it "home" all the time.
JenniferC February 21st, 2004, 10:42 AM Another Marylander here....Harford Co. (Bel Air) :wavey:
B.Mace February 21st, 2004, 08:37 PM I live right over the border in Delaware (close to Elkton - Cecil County) so I figured I'd *pop* in here too. (If JillMelissa can post by association I figured I could too! ) hee hee hee
Marcella February 21st, 2004, 09:39 PM I'm in Owings Mills! :wavey:
I would love it if we could have another get-together!!
Rochelle February 22nd, 2004, 07:34 AM Marcella- Where in Owings Mills? I'm in New Town.
Marcella February 22nd, 2004, 12:13 PM I lived in New Town (Owings Run Apts) until I got married in Nov 2001, then I moved into my DH's townhouse, which is right off of Owings Mills Blvd (we call it "old town") So, I'm really close to you!
Maybe we could try to have a little get-together at the Starbuck's at New Town? (didn't we do this once before?) I'm always looking to meet new friends, especially those with little ones around Amelia's age (Amelia is just over 9 months old) :)
Rochelle February 22nd, 2004, 12:37 PM I love Starbucks! I don't drink coffee but love their hot chocolate! I lived in Red Run before our house was built! You're definitely close! Any time you'd like to have a get together let me know, I'm up for it.
Marcella February 22nd, 2004, 04:12 PM I would love to meet up! Anyone else interested? I was thinking about perhaps a Saturday in March. My schedule is pretty open!
I know Anne will be up for a frapuccino!!
Rochelle February 22nd, 2004, 06:23 PM March would be great. Mine is pretty open too I think except for one Saturday I have to go to a meeting somewhere in MD!
Rochelle March 10th, 2004, 09:56 AM Still want to do a get together?
Marcella March 11th, 2004, 09:02 PM I'm sorry I haven't responded... YES! I'd love to do a get-together!
How about Saturday March 27 or Saturday April 3?
Rochelle March 12th, 2004, 06:47 AM Either of them works for me.
Marcella March 13th, 2004, 10:48 AM OK, how about April 3? We can meet at Starbuck's sometime in the afternoon, if that still sounds ok to you. Are you gonna bring your little guy?
Any other MD Mommies want to join us? The more the merrier! :)
TtownAnne March 13th, 2004, 03:30 PM I can come, I can come!!!! If it's anytime after 2pm, I can even come child-free! :)
Rochelle March 13th, 2004, 08:03 PM April 3rd works for me, I'll most likely be bringing Matthew. Whatever time works for me!
Marcella March 14th, 2004, 10:35 AM OK, April 3 it is! :) I will probably have Amelia with me, too. How about 2 PM? (that way, Anne, you can have a choice of whether you want to bring Caroline or not). Looking forward to it!
Rochelle March 15th, 2004, 11:54 AM Can we bump it just to 2:30. Matthew usually takes a nap around 12 and sleeps til around 2ish...
smt18 March 18th, 2004, 01:09 PM Hi Ladies! Rochelle (aliceinwonderland) and I are UB friends, and she told me about the get together you all are having, and i'm going to try to join you (if that's ok!). I live in Owings Mills, and i'm not a mommy yet, but I am a mommy to be (due end of September) :supergrin Anyway, looking forward to meeting you!
Marcella March 18th, 2004, 02:54 PM 2:30 should work ok. Depending on what kind of morning nap Amelia took, I may not be able to stay super long, but we'll stay as long as we can. Looking forward to it! :) smt18 - where in Owings Mills are you?
TtownAnne March 18th, 2004, 03:07 PM 2:30 is perfect for me - I can put Caroline down for her nap and head right out the door.
AmyP March 24th, 2004, 03:30 PM I just found this thread again (I swear I have no brain!)
I'll have to talk to DH, but I'm sure he'd be fine with the get-together (he's a little weird about those, but since I know Anne and Marcie, it should be fine). It's a little far, but then again, I'm sitting here at work in Owings Mills, so I guess it's okay!
Can someone post or PM me the address of the Starbucks? I just started working in this area and I'm not sure where it is exactly.
Erika March 29th, 2004, 05:24 PM I haven't been around much but thanks for the well wishes!! My induction went perfect and now I have a 7 week old little boy! :) Rav- I delivered at Howard County:)
jennfitz March 31st, 2004, 10:32 PM Don't know why I never saw this before!
My name is Jenn and I live in Westminster (Carroll County) About 10 min. from Anne. I used to work in Columbia but I don't work right now.
I am pregnant again. I am due November 6th (but will have a C-section on Octoer 29th).
I am going out of town tommarrow to Arizona to visit my grandparents for their 50th wedding anniversary. I would have loved to join you all at Starbucks. Hopefully there will be another get-together soon!
Have fun Saturday!
Jenn
Rochelle April 1st, 2004, 07:21 AM :wavey: Jenn, congrats on your pg. Enjoy your trip out to AZ!
Marcie & Anne are we still on for Saturday?
AmyP April 1st, 2004, 11:02 AM I'm on for Saturday (if someone will tell me where the heck the Starbuck's is! )
TtownAnne April 1st, 2004, 03:43 PM Yep, I'm definitely coming!
Marcella April 1st, 2004, 07:36 PM Yep, Amelia and I will be there (and I PM'd you, Amy). :)
AmyP April 2nd, 2004, 10:03 AM Thanks, Marcie. I'll see you all tomorrow!
I'll try to remember my digital camera so I can take pics of everyone.
Jessica April 2nd, 2004, 03:08 PM Hi everyone! :wavey:
I am from MD too. I live in Baltimore County. I know a lot of you from OUH/UB!
I'm hoping to be at the get together tomorrow too.
Rochelle April 2nd, 2004, 03:15 PM Great, looking forward to seeing everyone, I'll be there by 2:30 as long as Matthew cooperates! :)
Marcella April 2nd, 2004, 09:03 PM Great, Jessica! Hope you can make it too!! :)
Marcella April 3rd, 2004, 07:59 PM I"m so sorry I didn't make it today. I was totally bummed. Amelia's first tooth just popped through this morning, with several more on the way.. and she was fussy, fussy, fussy! I couldn't get her to go down for her nap until a little after 2, and she slept for 2 hours. (and Sean wasn't home, since I had intended to bring Amelia with me).
Anyhow, I hope you all had a fantastic time, and I hope we can plan another one for next month sometime!
AmyP April 5th, 2004, 03:00 PM We had a great time. I'm so sorry you couldn't make it!
Can we do the next get-together a little closer to Jessica and me? Maybe in White Marsh or Towson or something? That way the same people don't always have to go so far.
Rochelle - I will post the picture of you and Matthew sometime from home since the memory card is there. It turned out really nice!
Rochelle April 5th, 2004, 03:08 PM Great, looking forward to it. Thanks!
TtownAnne April 5th, 2004, 03:20 PM In our defense, the last few get togethers have been out this way because Marcie and I have organized them (and in this past case, it was Rochelle's idea). They're not out here just to bug everyone else - it's still almost 40 miles for me to get to Owings Mills! :) But back on OUH or whatever we always said whoever organizes/makes the plans picks where they are, so if you want to organize, you dictate the location. :aok:
Can we do the next get-together a little closer to Jessica and me? Maybe in White Marsh or Towson or something? That way the same people don't always have to go so far
Marcella April 5th, 2004, 04:54 PM Agreed. I'd love to have another get-together in May (maybe I'll actually ATTEND this one) Amy - why don't you pick a date and place.. just not Saturday the 15th because it's Amelia's birthday. :)
AmyP April 6th, 2004, 10:18 AM Rochelle - I didn't get a chance to post the pic when I got home, but I will. I promise!
Anne - I didn't mean it in a bad way. Heck, I drive out to Owings Mills every day! I just remember that in the past, we rotated the areas to be fair. So that works for me.
Marcie - It won't be the 15th because my flight back from the cruise lands at 4:30 that day!
Before I pick a date and place, what else is bad for everyone? May 2nd is my birthday, May 9th is Mother's Day and the day I leave for my cruise. I'd rather not do it the 16th because that's the day after I get back. Memorial Day is May 31st, so that weekend probably isn't the best.
Would the weekend of May 22-23 be okay for everyone? Also, are Saturdays or Sundays better for everyone?
Rochelle April 6th, 2004, 10:21 AM May, June, July, and August are probably out for me. We've got stuff planned just about every weekend (showers, weddings, vacations) ...
Jessica April 6th, 2004, 10:28 AM The 15th of May is out for me too (brother's graduation) and Memorial Day weekend is out too. The 22nd or 23rd would work for me I think. Doesn't matter to me if it's Saturday or Sunday.
TtownAnne April 6th, 2004, 10:34 AM The 22/23 works for me too - and since it's after tax season, it doesn't matter if it is Saturday or Sunday. Marcie, we could drive together if you want.
AmyP April 6th, 2004, 01:07 PM Next question. Do you want this to be a child-free event or a child-friendly event? I would love to see everyone's kids, but I understand that sometimes you want time to yourselves. Just let me know so I can figure out what our options are.
TtownAnne April 6th, 2004, 01:19 PM I don't mind either way - but that also limits our locations/stuff to do. And if it's a kid-friendly event it's better for us in the morning - Caroline naps in the afternoons and it's pretty important towards her mood for the evening!
Jessica April 6th, 2004, 01:49 PM Personally, I would prefer child-free, but I would go and I would have fun either way.
Marcella April 6th, 2004, 02:04 PM That weekend works fine for me! And I'm ok with not bringing Amelia....
AmyP April 6th, 2004, 06:26 PM Then it will be a child-free event the weekend of 5/22-5/23! Now, I just have to think of something.....
My brain is fried from work, so I'll have to think of something later.
AmyP April 12th, 2004, 02:55 PM How does this sound to you?
Saturday, May 22, lunch or dinner at Silver Spring Mining Company on Belair Road in Perry Hall. They are similar to Bill Bateman's. Anyway, we can schedule times around kids' naps or when DHs will be home, and after we eat, we can walk around the Avenue or the mall if time/weather permits.
Another option I thought of is Red Brick Station at the Avenue. We can walk around the Avenue or drive across the street to the mall afterwards if we want.
What does everyone think?
Marcella April 12th, 2004, 03:18 PM I vote for Red Brick Station, but I'll do either! Oh, and lunchtime would work better for me. :)
Jessica April 13th, 2004, 08:41 AM I vote for Red Brick too, but either place is fine!
AmyP April 13th, 2004, 12:06 PM Then Red Brick, it is!
Let's do it at 1:00 at Red Brick Station on May 22. If anyone needs to change the time, let me know. I realize we are working around nap schedules and the like.
Brooke April 13th, 2004, 12:42 PM Hi everyone!
I just thought I'd drop in and I discovered you're having another get-together! I might be able to make it. It depends on whether Darren is working or not. I won't know until the week before.
AmyP April 13th, 2004, 05:01 PM Just let us know when you can. We'd love to have you!
ksp117 April 15th, 2004, 04:50 PM I grew up in Reisterstown. I currently live in Columbia but next month we are moving to Eldersburg.
ksp117 April 15th, 2004, 04:51 PM Sorry forgot to add. (I'm sure you realize) I'm new to this board
Erika April 17th, 2004, 09:01 AM :hi: HI Kim! I am in Columbia also :)
I would love to go to a get together but all of May is bad for me :( Hopefully we can plan another one for over the summer!! :)
AmyP April 20th, 2004, 11:30 AM Hi Kim! Welcome to OUAL!
Hi Erika! We're going to try to do these every month, so maybe we'll catch you next month. If you want, you can even pick the place!
Erika April 20th, 2004, 12:32 PM Oh it doesn't matter to me where it is :) I am willing to drive a bit.
AmyP May 6th, 2004, 12:23 PM BALTIMORE ROAD RULES
First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Bawl-a-mer, or Ball-tee-more, depending on whether you live North or South of Route 40.
Next, if your road map is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy a new one. If near Howard County and your map is one day old, it is already obsolete. On Monday, you don't wash your clothes, you warsh them. Before you eat a meal, you don't wash your hands, you warsh them in wudder.
Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Baltimore has its own version of traffic rules... "Hold on and pray." There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Baltimore. We all drive like that. All directions start with "The Beltway"... which has no beginning and no end.
The morning rush hour is from 6 to 11. The evening rush hour is from 4 to 7. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.
If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out and possibly shot.
When you are the first one on the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before moving ahead to avoid crashing with all five of the drivers running the red light in cross-traffic. (However, if you don't go as soon as it turns green, you get the horn.)
Construction on I-97 is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment. Interesting that it's called "an Interstate," but runs only from the Beltway to Annapolis. Opening in 1992, it has been torn up and under re-construction ever since. (Does Former Governor Glendenning have any relatives who build highways?)
All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we're in GLIMBURNIE! (Glen Burnie)."
If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect.
Car horns are actually "Road Rage" indicators.
All old ladies with blue hair in Buicks have the right of way. Period.
All roads mysteriously change their names as you cross intersections.
If asking directions in Ellicott City or Columbia, you must know how to speak Korean. If in Randallstown, Ebonics will be your best bet. If you stop to ask directions in Brooklyn ... well, don't.
A trip across town (north to south) will take a minimum of four hours, although the tunnel does have, on occasion, more than one lane open, but never on holiday weekends.
The minimum acceptable speed on the Beltway is 85. Anything less is considered downright sissy.
The Beltway is our daily version of NASCAR.
If it's 10 degrees, it's the Orioles' opening day. If it's 110 degrees, it's opening day at Ravens Stadium.
If the humidity is 98+ and the temperature is 98+, it's May/June/July/August/September, and sometimes October.
If you go to a football game, pay the $75.00 to park in the "Ravens Lot". Parking elsewhere could cost up to $7500 for damages, towing fees, parking tickets, etc.
If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his yard during Preakness, run over him. It's probably not his yard, anyway.
WELCOME TO BALTIMORE, HON!
Thought you guys would find that funny. :)
Are we still on for Red Brick Station on May 22?
AmyP May 21st, 2004, 12:35 PM Looks like Jess and I are the only ones coming tomorrow. Oh well.
Shall we try again in June sometime?
I'm up for just about any weekend in June. Is the 5th okay with everyone to go to Red Brick Station? Let's keep it child-free like it was before if everyone is okay with that.
If not, start posting dates that work for you and we'll go with whatever the most people can do.
Jessica May 21st, 2004, 02:14 PM I am pretty sure the 5th would work for me.
Kimmy0712 June 4th, 2004, 11:28 AM Is there anyone else who istaking their kids to see the Wiggles on August 24th in Baltimore??
redhairedgirl June 14th, 2004, 07:16 AM Hey Ladies! I hope you don't mind me pokin' my nose in here...
DH just received a wonderful job offer that is bringing us back to the area. We won't be moving until about the end of July/ early August, and I still am not exactly sure where we will be (his new job is in Herndon, VA), but if you're planning any get togethers in late Aug or early Sept, I was wondering if you would include me? I'd love to see a few of you again, and then *finally* meet Anne... ;) and I'd get to meet a few new faces as well. :)
Mandy
Jessica June 14th, 2004, 10:10 AM Hi Mandy! :wavey: That would be great if you could come to a get together! It would be great to see you again!
AmyP June 14th, 2004, 06:32 PM And I would love to finally meet you!
