View Full Version : Motrin
Kathryn July 21st, 2005, 11:50 AM Hi there...
Sheahan (I believe) is teething... I think her top 2 are coming through- I have been giving her infant motrin and that helps but I am worried about giving it to her every day... Anyone know if this is bad to do? What are you thoughts? Give it to her as she needs it?
TIA!
Suzi July 21st, 2005, 12:59 PM Daily and frequent doses of Motrin CAN cause stomach upset (it CAN...not that it WILL). If you are worried about her getting Motrin every day, you could try switching it up with Tylenol. Also, you could try Hyland's Teething Tablets - some mommies SWEAR by them. Another idea is to buy small bagels (about 3" across) and give them to her frozen. They are perfect size to hold (especially with the little hole in the middle) and the cold feels so good on their gums. Good luck!
m'honey July 21st, 2005, 01:01 PM um, I'd really check with your pediatrician on that. Usually they (the medical community "they") advise to give Tylenol instead of Motrin for pain. Also, for teething pain they usually discourage the use of Tylenol or Motrin because it can mask the symptoms of an ear infection, or other more serious condition that requires medical attention. For both my boys, I've used homeopathic teething tablets, I know not everyone likes them or thinks they work. I use Hyland's and my local Target store carries them behind the Pharmacy counter. Walgreens, Kroger and Safeway also carry the Hyland's products, they also make a teething gel that we haven't tried but have heard good things about. A comparable product is Humphrey's and the one for teething is commonly known as #3. HTH!
Dennis July 21st, 2005, 01:06 PM I'm guessing you're going to get a ton of conflicting advice here :) Our ped says if it seems like the pain is really bothering them to alternate Tyelenol and Motrin every 3 hours.

:omg: that's definitely opposite of what I've always been told which is to NEVER, EVER mix Tylenol & Motrin... also, I thought I'd try to explain why not use Motrin for a child's pain: it's a very strong NSAID (anti-inflammation drug) and usually reserved for children who get very high fevers that cannot be controlled by Tylenol, an issue of the risks associated with fever being greater than the risks associated with taking Motrin. Finally, a dose of Motrin lasts 6-8 hours.
Definitely pls call your pediatrician & check what s/he recommends.
Suzi July 21st, 2005, 01:34 PM I am quite certain that alternating Tylenol/Motrin is a well-accepted form of pain relief for teething (as well as EIs). Tylenol however, is actually NOT the drug of choice for fevers since it is not effective for fevers over 100, not even for adults.
As for masking symptoms of an EI, most current research suggests that EIs should not be treated with antibiotics anyway, rather they should be treated for pain (with Tylenol/Motrin/Auralgan) and allowed to run their course. Research shows that up to 90% of EIs will resolve in the same amount of time with or without antibiotics. Don't see much of a worry here...
I would be another who has been advised (by three seperate docs) to alternate Tylenol/Motrin as needed. But I'd want to try the least measure of intervention first (teethers, bagels, washrags, etc.).
Nichole July 21st, 2005, 01:38 PM When Gavin's really teething and is really cranky and bothered as a result, I will use Tylenol and Motrin. I typically will give Tylenol during the day and reserve the Motrin for nighttime, since it lasts longer. I also use the teething tablets.
As far as using it too much goes, I think it says on the bottle not to use it for more than 2 weeks at a time. I imagine that has to do with its potential for stomach irritation.

ITA! When Emma is running a fever, we alternate Tylenol and Motrin every three hours.
Kathryn July 21st, 2005, 02:44 PM Thanks for all the advice... I didn't post this but I actually hate giving dd any medicine... but I know she is in pain... she is not a big one for any of the teething toys I have bought her... but I have been doing the bagel :aok:
Thanks again!
Brandi July 21st, 2005, 03:02 PM Our ped is one who does not like the alternating Tylenol and Motrin. I'm not sure why - I've always wondered why some docs advise to do it and some against it. Maybe if I can remember at Heather's 1 year check, I'll ask.
