I have been working in the same department for a little over a year. I was brought in to fill in for a woman who was going on maternity leave for 5 months, to do FCC reporting, root cause analysis, write up analysis, etc. While she was gone, I was very heavily involved in some new FCC regulations that came out--I developed processes for the group, set up training sessions, compiled financial info and impact info for the entire division and participated very heavily in meetings with legal, technical/regulatory and public policy. I did quite a bit of root cause analysis and interacted with a lot of the upper management.
In January, the woman came back from maternity leave and I showed her everything that was set up, and we pretty much split what was going on. Originally we had anticipated that we would have a lot more reports than we actually do, so in addition, I assisted my manager with other projects and also assisted my co-workers. The woman I work with is not a very happy person and although she has been nice to me, she is constantly putting people down, trying to make herself look better and is very rude to almost everyone that she comes in contact with.
In March we got a new manager for my group, She has a reputation for being out for herself, stabbing people in the back, etc. I have known her for awhile, and while I'm certainly not mean to her or anything, I don't trust her at all. She is someone who will act like your best buddy all of the time and I don't like that.
So, on Friday my manager set up a meeting with me, the other woman I work with, and another manager in my group. It was to make our job descriptions more clear and make sure that no one was over loaded with work. The other manager we work with is going to be in charge of training now--a project I worked on for about 2 months, very intensely, I now need to transition over to him. The other woman I work with will be doing ALL FCC reports, PUC reports, all root cause analysis, basically anything with any visibility in the whole group--I am not supposed to do ANY of it any more unless she goes on vacation. I'm going to be doing processes now.
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. 1. I had set up all kinds of stuff and spent a lot of time on both the training and on the FCC/PUC stuff and had only had good feedback and now I can't even touch it! 2. We all know that there are going to be layoffs after the union contract negotiations are over and I feel like this new manager just set me up to get laid off! Who will you keep if you have to go down one manager? The people doing all of the visible work? Or, the person doing busy work with processes that are already written, just needing to be put in one place???
I checked with one of my mentors at work and she told me that I need to find another job. She thinks that I'm out of there as soon as there is a lay off.
What do you think? Am I overreacting?
I set up a meeting with my manager on Monday to see what exactly she wants me to do and I also want to ask her why she divided up the work the way she did. I think I should tell her that I feel like I've been set up to be laid off and see what she says. Not that she would tell me the truth anyway.
Any ideas on what I should say to her?
If you read this far, thanks!
