View Full Version : Dressing for an interview - what would you do?

I have an interview next Wednesday. It's a lunch interview, at a very nice place, and the man I'm interviewing with told me that they dress casually in the summer, he wouldn't be wearing a suit. So - do I go the full-out interview suit route, or do I dress down just a bit and go for something that still looks professional but not quite so formal? I'm thinking the latter, but I thought I'd ask for opinions. :)

I would say that if he went out of his way to tell you he would be dressed down then I would not wear a suit. However, I would try and stay as professionally dressed as I could without being in a suit.

I agree with Jenny. I would probably wear a nice skirt with a nice blouse or a pair of suit slacks with blouse and forgo the jacket.

I agree, too. Even if someone told me to dress casually for an interview, it just wouldn't feel right to not dress up a little.

hey, Lisa....Can you do a twinset with a skirt? That is not quite a suit, but still tailored???

Lisa, maybe something like slacks and a dress shirt with a pattern within the fabric?
I definately agree with dressing up but not too "up", since he made a point of telling you that he wouldn't be dressed in a suit.

I agree too. Dress pants and a nice top always looks professional. Good Luck!

I would wear *almost* a suit.....either a skirt or pants and a button down shirt that you'd wear under a suit coat. But no, I would not wear a suit.
gulp!

I agree with everyone else. When I have to dress this way, I usually pick a skirt (long or grazing the knee) and a twinset or similar.
Good luck at your interview!

Thanks, y'all! :) Those were the lines I was thinking along. I didn't want to do the whole suit, but definitely wasn't going casual. Lissa, if I can find a twinset before Wed., I think that would be great. :aok: (My wardrobe is absolute crap - everything is either too big, still too small, or just way too dated to get away with. Blech!) So I'll dress up but not too up. This works for the office, too - that way I can tell people I've got a lunch date when they get squirrely about me being dressed nicer than usual!
