Everywhere I go lately this is all I hear about (I don't have any links to stories on hand, but I can find them if anyone wants). The high level of mercury in tuna. Of course many stories are conflicting so you really don't know what to believe.

What are you pregnant ladies planning on doing if you are a tuna eater?

I think that once in a while isn't bad. I ate it all the time with Ethan and he's normal. I eat the light kind and from what I read, that's ok. I don't eat it everyday, more like once a week or month.

I've eaten tuna alot with this pregnancy and with the last one. I hadn't heard that it was bad for you. I think that most things in moderation is ok.

I'm not a huge fan of tuna; I eat it probably once or twice a year when I'm not pregnant, so I don't have a big problem with avoiding it now that I'm pg. I'd say that in moderation it's not going to be a big deal to eat it. It's such a good source of protein, so it's a bummer that you have to watch how much you eat.

I just saw on the news last night, how they are saying for the first time, there is a warning about the mercury levels for pregnant women and young children. I thought that warning had always been out there. Anyways, coincidentally, we had tuna for supper last night. I've had it a handful of times this pregnancy, probably once a month so I'm not worried.

Mandy, I think the warning had been about fresh tuna, shark, tilefish, etc (the big fish), but not canned tuna. Maybe now they have changed the warning to include the canned stuff as well as including children in the warning? :dunno: Now I'm glad I don't really like it.

I'm not a fan of tuna, so this isn't an issue for me, but from what I've read, you can eat it as often as once a week and still be okay.

I agree that it is supposedly the larger tuna that they are talking about.. not the canned tuna. I LOVE tuna... both kinds.. but have typically only indulged in the canned kind on occasion during pregnancy. The newest thing to "beware" of in fish is that farmed salmon has high levels of PCB's and should be avoided. TOO many things to avoid while pregnant. Drives me crazy! Why don't we all just go live in a bubble?

I was a big tuna eater before I got pg but had heard the warnings about mercury so I made sure to ask my OB. I was told that one 6oz. can once a week is considered safe for pg ladies. I don't even eat it that often now, but I do eat it maybe 2-3 times a month and I enjoy every bite :)

Thanks for the info. I am still seeing my RE at 8 weeks because I am having complications, and they have never given me any advice on eating, etc.
I do love tuna salad, but if you can have it once a week, that's fine. It's not a sandwich you have daily. I did hear you couldn't eat smoked fish, but I love lox on my bagels..is this true? No smoked fish?
