For those that have baby's that take a pacifier, how often do you give them new ones (throwing out the old ones, and replacing it with a new one)? Teagan has this bizarre rash on her face, around her mouth, so thinking it might be related to her pacifier, I washed and boiled them, and also got a new one out of the package (I'm somewhat stingy with them, as we can't get the ones she likes in Canada, of course!), and noticed that on the new one, the latex is much more transparent, whereas the older one is darker, and maybe even 'tougher'.

We always lost them before we had to worry about them getting old. I'd go through at least 4 a week.

Give her the new one and see if the rash goes away.

If it doesn't get better, she may be having a reaction to the latex. are they made of "latex" or some other plastic? Latex allergies are pretty common, unfortunately.

When they start "feeling different" to our fingers we buy her new ones.

I feel awful reading this...we haven't replaced Emily's pacis at all. She only takes them for naps, in her car seat and at night, so they don't get a whole lot of use. I'd say she's been using the same 6-8 pacis since last summer. She doesn't like latex ones at all, she prefers the clear silicone newborn Mams.

I had the same thought as Brooke--could it be a latex allergy?

Katie uses the silicone Mams.

6 or 8? Frances has been using the same 2 or 3.

No clue if this is true or jsut a ploy to get you to buy more but the packaging that comes with Avent pacifiers (the sillicone newborn ones, since that's all I have the packaging for still) says to replace them every 3 months cause with over use, and exposure to changes in temperature they can become a choking hazard.

Would a latex allergy just suddenly develop? It's only been over the past few days (maybe a week or so) that it's been there...

I appreciate the feedback!

Dennis, thanks for making me feel better!! We lost a couple on vacation last summer, so replaced those, but I know at least 1-2 of hers are a year old.

 We always lost them often enough that she had new ones frequently. However, when Katie was little, she had really bad reflux, and would spit up into her binkies. :errr: We would think they were getting clean, and then we'd find mold in them. :errr: So we started replacing them pretty frequently after that...

We found Dylan got a rash if the base of the paci was too big. He would suck so hard that he would get a rash. We had to buy ones with small bases. It happened as he hit around the 8-10 month mark.

Emma had hers for about a year before we threw them all out and replaced them. She'd get the same red marks around her mouth- they always went away when she hadn't had the bink in a while, or if we used a new one. It was a good clue to us to just throw them away and get new ones.
