Anyone have any advice on how I can get my son to keep his hat on??

He hates any type of cap, swim hat, etc and we're in the sun a lot in the summer.

Any tips? My son is 20 months old and very stubborn.

PS. We haven't even thought about sunglasses yet!

I just started reading the SuperNanny book and she says just keep putting it back on. He takes it off, you put in on, he takes it off, you put it on. :dunno: It was in the introduction - the only part of the book I've read so far.

Maybe he'll actually start to like wearing it. That's what happened with Rebekah. She doesn't like the sun in her face and she finally realized that hats help with that so she will wear them now.

Ugh, both of my boys are like that and it drives me crazy!! I usually just keep trying and then get sick of it and just give up

Emma is getting better at keeping hers on for longer periods of time. Have you tried ones that tie or velcro under the chin? That seems to work best for her.

We started Caroline early with sunglasses, as you know from playgroup. :) She absolutely refused hats, though, so decided to pick our battles. She'd rather wear sunglasses instead of hats, and so we give her the choice of submitting to a hat or having to stand still while we put sunscreen on her face.

Bianca will not wear hats unless its a baseball cap, and backwards... She looks soooo funny. Now, sunglasses are another thing. She LOVES them and wears them all the time.

Basically I am no help

Alex loves to wear hats because his "balding" daddy always wears a baseball hat when he's not at work. Maybe have DH wear a hat so Ben will think it's cool to be like dad.

Sunglasses.....another story, but slowly he's warming up to them.

This is exactly what I did with Anna last summer, but I would also repeat our rule - Outside, hat on! We had one loooong sesson early in the summer, and one or two shorter ones later on. The first time we battled it out, I had her out for a walk in the stroller, and we would stop about every 3 steps to put her hat back on. It was a long walk! When I've had her in the backpack, I've stopped to take her off of my back and put it back on again, or ask strangers for help.

This summer, now that she's older, she knows the rule and gets choices. If we're just at home and she takes her hat off, I say something like "Oh you took your hat off, you must be ready to go inside." Her choice becomes hat or inside. If we're at the park and have the stroller, her choice becomes hat or sit in the stroller under the sunshade. If we're just walking, we go back to the battle of off, on, off, on.

All in all, she's great about wearing the hat!

We gave up on the sunglasses. But, with the hats, we just keep putting them back on again. Joe was pretty easy, I think because Dennis always wears a baseball hat. Plus, at dc they have to wear hats outside. I started wearing a hat whenever we were outside too and that helps. Frances is VERY dramatic though and loves to pull hers off and throw herself to the ground SCREAMING when we put it back on her head. We just keep doing it and hopefully it will sink in soon.

I started with Mason at just under a year in the winter time with the whole "If we're outside the hat is on; if we're inside the hat can come off" routine. I kept it up every day and continued it into the summer. No problems now. My only problem is the "sunscream" but I make it known that we aren't going out without it, so the choice quickly becomes obvious. It helps that I always wear a hat and sunscreen too. He doesn't wear sunglasses often, but oddly enough, he did yesterday at the Dentist because the light was too bright.

Thanks so much everyone! I meant to come back right after my weekend trials!

We were successful for a bit! :yippee:

It's been so darn hot around here that I haven't tried a hat with the velcro ties yet. We don't have one yet either.

Anyway, I made sure to wear my hat and Jim had his too. Lexie wore hers for a bit, but then wanted it off.

We'll see how long the fascination lasts! :sunny:

Thank you all! :hug99:

Janelle's second summer (so at about 19 months old) we started telling her that if she takes her hat off she has to go inside. That worked great.

Caid can't comprehend this at all though, and his dislike of things on his head is more of a sensory issue than just a dislike, so we just put sunscreen in his hair.
