View Full Version : So what will she be afraid of today?
Melissa May 30th, 2005, 01:59 PM Is anyone else going through this? It seems that Katie is going through a scared of everything phase. Some I can understand, such as the vacuum, yes, that can be scary. But I think she's over that fear since the time that she made a huge mess and I made her help clean it up.
Other fears she has are: the fan in the bathroom (its loud), her captain feathersword (NO idea why), walking through the Chinook helicopter (no idea why!), and other weird items.
I guess I'm lucky that I'm not dealing with monsters in the closet, but it is frustrating to want to go somewhere and have Katie freak out on me. Any suggestions?
Mary May 30th, 2005, 02:24 PM Melissa,
I don't really have any advice, but we go throught the same thing with both of the kids. All we do is just keep telling them what it is. If it is something we can't avoid then we just remind them that they know what it is. It works better sometimes than others. I can tell you that Joe, at 3.5 is growing out of a lot of them.

Melissa May 30th, 2005, 03:49 PM I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one! I've been talking to Katie about some of her fears just like you say. We finally made some headway with the bathroom fan. For the past few weeks whenever I told her it was time for a bath or a shower she would look and say, "fan." Each time I would tell her that the fan won't hurt her, that it is off and won't go on.
She was so afraid of the fan she wouldn't even want to go into the bathroom, which was a favorite place of hers for a while! She loved following me in there and sitting on her potty while I was in there. Well after two weeks of being afraid of the fan, she finally followed me in today but kept a careful eye on that fan!
I guess I'm just really worried because when we were in the helicopter she kept on saying "plane, plane." I kept telling her it was a helicopter which she did eventually say. But my fear is that when we take our trip this fall she'll be afraid of the plane and that will be hell on earth!
Thank you!!!
Mary May 30th, 2005, 08:48 PM My kids are ok with airplanes, I don't think that they really realize quite what is going on. Joe probably does more than Frances, but not enough to be scared or anything. Joe is just excited he gets to watch videos. :)
I know what you mean about the fan though, Joe is scared of his ceiling fan and the automatic hand dryer in the public restrooms.

That's good to know!! We took Katie on a plane at 10 months, but she wasn't afraid of anything back then!
I know what you mean about the fan though, Joe is scared of his ceiling fan and the automatic hand dryer in the public restrooms.
Thankfully, Katie isn't afraid of regular, quiet ceiling fans, but she does have fears of those hand dryers and hair dryers. It must be the type of noise that she hears.
Thank you for helping!
Lynn May 31st, 2005, 09:20 PM Oh man, I feel your pain! SInce I know Katie and Aaron are the same age I am actually relieved that someone else is going through this too.
Lately Aaron is afraid of the bath. And not just a little afraid, but a LOT afraid. He cries through the whole thing and it just breaks my heart.
He's also afraid of getting his haircut and truthfully, that one is getting a little old. I comfort him all the time, tell him what a big boy he is, and even gave him a fake pair of scissors to cut mommy's hair but still he sobs and sobs and sobs.
Hopefully others will have some good advice for us.
Mary May 31st, 2005, 09:21 PM I don't know if this will help, but for haircuts we go to a kids place where they can watch videos while they get their hair cut. That helps. Joe still sits on my lap, but at least he isn't screaming and crying!
