View Full Version : Toddlers Favorite Books
Alyssa May 23rd, 2005, 07:35 PM This is not a new idea for a thread, but reading Dawn's naptime/bedtime book question and seeing how many parents said their kids had favorite (overread) books made me want to post this.
What books are your toddler(s) favorites?
Melissa May 23rd, 2005, 07:40 PM It really varies from day to day, but the constants are Dora the Explorer Choo-choo book, 8 silly monkeys.... and she'll grab most everything else too!
Trish May 23rd, 2005, 07:40 PM Good Night Moon - it has to be the last book read every night before he goes to sleep
Any Dora or Blues Clues book - he got 2 of each from my parents and he loves them!
Anything we get from the library - we go every two weeks (or try to) and those are usually the books we read at bedtime
Alyssa May 23rd, 2005, 07:54 PM Aidan and Colin have 6 books that we must read/look at over and over. Several aren't even stories but more "factual" stuff...not as interesting for the reader! But there is clearly a theme!!

TtownAnne May 23rd, 2005, 07:58 PM Caroline's current favorite is any from the "Rotten Ralph" series - she first fell in love with them because the main character's name is Sarah "Just like Sarah next door my friend!"

Lynn May 23rd, 2005, 08:23 PM Among Aaron's favorites are "Hop on Pop" and "Go Dog Go". Just about any book with a dog in it will do for him though.
He also has a "Mommy Loves Me" and "daddy Loves Me" (little Golden Books) that he loves us to read to him before bed.
Suzi May 23rd, 2005, 08:40 PM Julia's fave is "The Little Red Hen." She also loves picture books - we ask her to find something red or find the grapes...LOVES that!
Shanna2 May 23rd, 2005, 08:43 PM Leah's current favorites are Giraffe's Can't Dance, The Giving Tree and The Day the Babies Crawled Away. I highly recommend all of them! :)
Mary May 23rd, 2005, 09:11 PM Lately Frances has been into Dora and Joe has wanted the Dr. Suess Sleep Book.
Mary

Olivia

We have to read all of those every night before bed.
Clare May 23rd, 2005, 09:19 PM I wouldn't quite class Harry as a toddler anymore, but his favourite books at the moment are by Pamela Allen - Mr McGee, Mr McGee and the Blackberry Jam and Inside Mary Elizabeth's House.Unfortunately Samuel does not like books :( When we try to read to him he struggles and cries. He doesn't want anything to do with it. He does have one book that holds his interest for a minute - That's Not my Fairy, a touch and feel book. He likes the feel of the pink, fluffy wings!
NickiB May 23rd, 2005, 10:41 PM Kaitlyn is liking Where the Wild things are. She also likes When I was little by Jamie Lee Curtis, it is pretty cute. Plus Disney princess stories are always a hit.
Bonnie May 23rd, 2005, 11:35 PM Caroline likes Olivia, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, and The Gruffalo (which is my favorite).
Dawn May 24th, 2005, 01:22 PM Hmmm, Alexia really doesn't have a favorite book, I don't think. It's more like a favorite book of the week...because when she picks out books, she'll pick the same one for a few days, then change it up....and she'll pick that one every day for a few days and so on.
For the past couple days it's been How does a Dinosaur clean their Room?
Before that it was Curious George, then before that The Giving Tree, The Hungry Little Catterpillar, The Pokey Little Puppy. It changes up quite often
MamaGoofy May 24th, 2005, 01:34 PM He loves Cat in the Hat and any Disney book. Right now we are stuck on Little Mermaid and Bambi. I love that he has such a range of interest!!
dbradley May 24th, 2005, 08:19 PM Ava changes it up quite a bit as well. She loves The Little Red Hen, too, Suzi! Lately she really loves seahorses, so she's loving Mr. Seahorse by Eric Carle and The Secret Seahorse (can't remember by whom) Also, Tails-I also can't remember by whom. And Goodnight Moon is her favorite bedtime story. A new development at reading time is that if I don't name the author at the beginning she'll ask: "who's it by???" So cute!
Karri May 24th, 2005, 10:19 PM For the past couple days it's been How does a Dinosaur clean their Room?
Aidan got this one for his birthday this year and its one of his faves. He can recite it
I dont know if he has favorites, per se, but definatley ANYTHING with a truck scores high in his eyes!!!! And oh boy...we have too many to list.
But right now, he is liking: Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb in the rotation every night before bed.
Norah & Elliott's favorite right now is What Color is Your Underwear?
Dawn May 25th, 2005, 01:11 AM Aidan got this one for his birthday this year and its one of his faves. He can recite it
Cute! :) Does he have the other 2 (How does a Dinosaur say goodnight & How does a Dinosaur get well soon?) The first one I listed, she can recite real well, as that one we use to read to her religiously as one of her bedtime books. :)
magoo May 25th, 2005, 09:20 AM Anna loves pretty much anything with pages and pictures. She's really into her big sister and new baby books right now, but generally doesn't show any major preferences.
I personally like to read her books by Nancy Tafuri and Sandra Boynton.
Nanley May 27th, 2005, 01:12 AM John's two favorites at the moment are Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs and But Not the Hippopotamus, both by Sandra Boynton. He consistently brings me those two to read, and I have to read them at least 2-3 times in a row. Runners up would be That's Not My Lion, which is a touch-and-feel book, just like That's Not My Fairy (which Clare mentioned) and something called (I think) the Big Word Book. Just a bunch of photographs of *things* with their names under them. John especially likes the cat. :)
Nichole May 27th, 2005, 10:15 AM Jackson doesn't have a particular favorite at the moment. He's big on a bunch of Baby Disney books that Brendon bought at Good will a while ago, and before those it was any of his truck books. (they're just labeled pictures of trucks/tractors/machinery)
I like to read Sandra Boynton books to him, but he's not really that into them. He does think Red Hat Blue Hat is pretty funny, though. Oops.
Kimmy0712 May 30th, 2005, 09:33 PM The My Big Trucks book is Alex's favorite. He is totally obessed with lawn mowers and loves this book.
LISA June 16th, 2005, 01:29 PM I took Milo and the Magical Stones by Marcus Pfister

out of the library and she loves it, it has 2 different endings and she loves the shiny stone pic's too
Brooke June 16th, 2005, 01:45 PM Rebekah's new favorite bedtime story is Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger. I got it at a used book store about 6 months ago and she's started asking for it every night recently.

Caroline's new favorite, by Kevin Henkes. She walks around the house going "Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum!" (about a mouse with an unusual name who learns how to deal with people making fun of her)
Girlo June 17th, 2005, 09:49 AM Alex doesn't have many favs, but he has started bringing me the same couple of books before bed. :)
The first one is a Maisy counting book. :) He LOVES Maisy and I should probably look for some more Maisy books sometime.
The others aren't stories....just pictures of stuff. He points to something and we tell him what it is (at 19 months, he's still figuring stuff out). He has My Big Animal Book and My Big World Book right now. A friend has My Big Truck Book, but he didn't seem quite as enamored with that one.

Girlo June 17th, 2005, 09:55 AM Oh, I thought of some more! He has some little books from the Peter Rabbit series that have little flaps in them - you have most of the sentence on the page, and then the last word or two is under a flap with a picture. He LOVES the flaps and knows just when to lift it up during the story. :)
I guess for toddlers, having some action in there is the key. Alex is VERY laid-back and has a fantastic attention span.....but will not sit still for a long, involved story. If he brings us a long story....we just make up a synopsis for each page and flip it over when we can see him getting antsy.
Darcy June 17th, 2005, 10:07 AM We have a few that are Riley's favorite, and the funny thing is that none of them are from my company (I'm an editor.)! Anyway, she really likes any of the Spot books (she brought me Spot's Birthday Party this morning to read before school), Is There a Horse in Your House, and Going on a Bear Hunt. Those are her favorite's right now.
Any of the lift-a-flap books are a hit in our house. The poor Spot books have been taped quite a bit since Riley doesn't know her own limits.
