View Full Version : What is your commute time?
Kimmy0712 May 23rd, 2005, 12:56 PM Currently I only have about a 10 minute drive to work every day which is FABULOUS! However DH and i are considering a move to Southern PA which would give me about 1 hr - 1hr 15min. How hard is a long commute if you have one?
Shanna May 23rd, 2005, 01:06 PM ~45 minutes (including daycare drop off)
Darcy May 23rd, 2005, 01:09 PM Mine's between and hour and 1 hour 15 minutes. It's a straight shot, though, so there's hardly any stoplights. We live about 35 miles from my job and just bought a house a little further away--not much, but it'll add another 10 minutes to my drive. Some days the commute sucks, but for now I'm just sucking it up. It'd probably be better if I actually liked driving.
DH takes Riiley to and from daycare--it's at his work.
Dennis May 23rd, 2005, 01:14 PM Mine is about 30 minutes, which includes dropping the kids off or picking them up. On the rare times when I don't have to stop at daycare, it's about 10 minutes.
I had a long commute back when I was single and it was bad enough then. I can't imagine having to deal with it now.

Brooke May 23rd, 2005, 01:52 PM There's no way I could do a long commute. I already feel like I don't have enough time at home in the evenings, especially in the winter when it's dark by 5pm.
If I take Rebekah to my mom's, it's 5 min to her house, 10 min in her house, and 15 min to work (30 min total). If I go right to work from home, I'm there in less than 10 minutes.
Lette May 23rd, 2005, 02:02 PM It takes me about 35 minutes in the morning with no dropoff at daycare (DH does it :) ) On the way home it can vary from 35 to over an hour. Especially on rainy Friday nights. I pick the kids up on M,W,F and my total time then is about 45 to 50 minutes.
I wish my work would move closer to me.
Silke May 23rd, 2005, 02:08 PM Mine is 20 minutes to work. On the way home, I have to get the kids so that means about 45 minutes to an hour on the road.
Bonnie May 23rd, 2005, 02:50 PM I live less than 8 miles from my office. I have a VERY short commute. I would never be able to deal with anything longer than about 30 minutes. We could live in a much bigger house if I wasn't such a wimp, but I'd rather be close to home.
Lady E May 23rd, 2005, 03:08 PM I have about a 25 minute commute straight to work since DH drops off the kids.
I pick them up so the commute back home is about 45 mins.
No way could I do an hour plus commute.
Mary May 23rd, 2005, 09:16 PM I have about 20-25 minutes, except on the rare occasions I pick up or drop off the kids. Then it is more like 45 minutes total.
Mary
Trish May 23rd, 2005, 09:54 PM Mine is about 15 mins including dc drop off. I can't imagine doing anything longer - I'm so spoiled that way :blush1:
Alyssa May 23rd, 2005, 09:57 PM I'm about 40 minutes (23 miles) each way. Very rare that I have to drop off the kids though since DH is a SAHD.
Martian Lullaby May 24th, 2005, 09:32 AM My commute used to be 45-60 minutes each way. And DH was dropping Maya off, so that was door-to-door. Since we moved into our new house, though, my commute is about 15 minutes at the most, including daycare drop-off. We moved closer to work on purpose because I was going to pull off the road and start shooting if I had to do my awful commute much longer.
bunkie68 May 28th, 2005, 11:28 PM Mine is about an hour (worse if there's a wreck - or two, or three), not including daycare drop-off and pick-up, and it sucks rocks. :nahnah: Mine is pretty much all in town, so I fight traffic, and that's the worst part of it - I keep thinking of all the things I could be doing if it weren't for the $%^&*#@! traffic. I don't get home until after 6:00 most days (later if I have to make any stops on the way home), and I hate that. Julian might go to sleep earlier if I could get dinner and bath done earlier, but I can only go so fast. I feel like I don't have enough time with him - mornings are get up, get dressed and go (I'm up between 5 and 5:30, J is up between 6:30 and 6:45, and ideally we'd be out the door between 7 and 7:10 - ha ha, that's funny  ), and evenings are come home, fix dinner, eat, play a little, bath, bed - and I feel like I don't have much time for myself, as he's usually up until at least 9:00 (if not later - I think the record is 11:00  ). If there were any way I could have a shorter commute, I'd be all over that. Unfortunately, there aren't any jobs to speak of in my field anywhere closer to my house, so it's either commute or move (and I'm not moving - I like my house, it's less expensive where I live, and I don't have to deal with the stinkin' traffic every time I get out, because I live in a fairly small town).
Kim, if you can avoid that commute, I'd say avoid it - commuting blows big chunks.
Marcella May 30th, 2005, 03:23 PM Not counting daycare drop-off, it's about 20 minutes. So, I usually give myself 30 minutes to make it to work when I have to drop them off.
schwanda May 30th, 2005, 04:16 PM My commute's about 15 minutes now. When I move to Baltimore (soon!), my commute will be about 10-15 minutes.
Amanda
Girlo June 8th, 2005, 09:45 PM My commute is about 25-30 minutes, and I don't have a daycare drop-off to worry about. :)
Before I got my PT job closer to home, I was commuting to downtown Seattle with a Park & Ride bus ride, a ferry trip, and a 1/2 mile walk - 1 hour, 45 minutes each way. :(
Sometime next year (at the earliest), I'll try to transfer to the local branch of my bank and then my commute will be about 10 minutes (~ 4 miles). :)
Alicarwil June 24th, 2005, 01:20 PM My commute is about an hour, but if there is an accident, construction, snow, or even rain, it will increase to at least an hour and a half. Dh and I switch off with drop offs and pick ups, so it doesn't add time. I was at home for 4 months after Ian was born and then started back to work. It has gotten better now, but I remember being in the car, feeling so anxious to get home. I hate the idea that I spend 2-3 hours in the car when I could either be being productive at work or home with Ian. But I can handle the commute much better than dh and I like my job. So it goes...
Brookamy June 24th, 2005, 01:22 PM About 30 minutes, including dropping dd off at daycare. Dh usually picks dd up after he gets off of work.
jenj611 June 26th, 2005, 02:18 PM Mine is about 45 minutes. My husband drops our son off in the morning so that helps out a lot. I would not like a commute any longer than what I have now.
The morning is not the hard part - it's after work when I just want to be home!
Carrie H August 6th, 2005, 02:57 AM I work nights, so going to work takes longer than coming home. It's about 35 - 40 mintues to work and usually right about 30 coming home.
Lyndee August 11th, 2005, 01:43 AM My commute used to be 45 minutes in the morning and up to one hour in the evening. But since Lauryn rides with me now, we can use the carpool lane. So the commute is now cut to about 25-30 minutes each way.
Kerrif August 12th, 2005, 08:46 AM 45 minutes each way for me!
Okiejpb August 29th, 2005, 12:39 PM From home to daycare then to work is about 45 minutes. Luckily daycare is less than 3 miles from my office. I enjoy the time in the car with Samantha to and from daycare. She's almost 2. Not sure what we'll do when she's 5-6 and going to kindergarten/1st grade near our home which is 18 miles away. Guess I shouldn't think too much about it just yet. Hope everyone has a great day/week.
Nikole September 19th, 2005, 12:11 PM I was driving 90 miles a day! I hated it since I'm driving for about 1.5 hours each way. I think it had gotten worse after I wound up in 2 accidents in three weeks (rear ended both times). Luckily I work from home 3 days a week now, what a difference it makes.
Nadine September 29th, 2005, 08:14 AM I used to work in the same town I live in and commute was 10 minutes.
I since switched jobs and work in a different town. In the mornings, Commute is between 30-45 minutes (I use a backroad, not the highway because it is too jammed). In the afternoon, the highway is usually not jammed and then it can take 15-20 minutes. But when there's an accident or something ... oh boy! It can easily take much longer. TG that doesn't happen too often.
