View Full Version : Naptime and Bedtime - reading books...
Dawn May 23rd, 2005, 06:20 AM Does anyone else read their kiddos a book before naptime? I read Alexia one book. I tried not to a couple times, but she gets so upset and really wants me to read one....I think that may be a hard habit to break  There are worse things I suppose
How about bedtime? I read one book as well. When she was much younger it would be several books, but we're just down to one. :) Do you choose the book or does your lil' one choose it? For us, I have Alexia choose her book.
I was just curious as to what everyone else does for naptime and bedtime, whether books were read or not, and if so, how many and who chooses it. :)
Karri May 23rd, 2005, 07:15 AM I dont do books at naptime. Several times, aidan has asked, but I dont want to start that habit (not that books are a bad thing). It takes me long enough as it is to get 3 kids settled for a nap!
But yes, we do bedtime books. We typically do about 2-4, depending on the length. And we usually let Aidan pick. Sometimes he gets in a rut, though, and then we're reading the same damn books forever, so we have to pick some new ones, which makes him angry, but oh well.
With some of his books, he prefers to "read" to us. Oh so cute and annoying all at the same time
magoo May 23rd, 2005, 07:32 AM We don't do books at naptime. I don't think there's anything wrong with it... it's just not part of our routine.
Anna gets 2 stories at bedtime. We have her bedtime themed books upstairs, and she chooses two fom the pile. On occasion, she'll bring up a different book that she wants to have read. Sometimes she wants the same one twice, sometimes she skips them all together if she's really tired.
Hannabanana May 23rd, 2005, 09:26 AM Bedtime stories are a must in our house  Even when I'm as sick as a dog with a bad bad cold and can barely talk, I still have to read Hanna stories (for the record, I usually get through two pages & then make dh take over).
The length of the stories depends on how tired we all are really ... usually it's 3 relatively good sized stories or one really long story or a bunch of short short ones. :dunno:
Dennis May 23rd, 2005, 09:41 AM We do them at bedtime but not naptime. We usually read two - Joe and Frances each get to pick one. Sometimes we'll read a third one.

Trish May 23rd, 2005, 09:47 AM We don't generally do books at naptime, but there have been one or two times where he hasn't felt good or something and I have read just one book to him and that was it - not a habit I want to get into, either.
For bedtime we generally read him two books and then Good Night Moon (his all time favorite). He even knows that this is our rule and he gets to pick out his two books before GNM and then he helps me turn the pages of GNM. While I may not always feel like reading books at night, I will generally change my mind once I have started and he is laying there all cute in his bed listening so intently - it's just so sweet.
gulp! May 23rd, 2005, 09:57 AM We sometimes do them at naptime, but not always. Bedtime, though, it's usually 2-3 books, and she pushes for more, but we cut her off. Actually, mommy reads books, daddy tells stories. We let her pick, but sometimes if I don't want to read that book again, I'll try to sway her. :awink:
She's also clever in that she waits until you are down to the last page, then announces that that book wasn't really the one she wanted to read, and tries to start over with another book.
Eleanor May 23rd, 2005, 10:28 AM We did them at naptime for a while, but don't anymore. We do 2 at bedtime...if we're running ahead of schedule we might read another one, or if she's really dawdling, she can lose one of her story priveleges.
Brookamy May 23rd, 2005, 10:45 AM Sometimes we do books at naptime, sometimes not. At bedtime, we usually do 2-4 books, depending on what she picks out.
Dawn May 23rd, 2005, 11:46 AM Wow, so far I"m the only one that reads books at naptime ALL the time!? yikes! I knew it was going to be a hard habit to break. Ah well. Like I said, it could be worse I suppose. Maybe I'll see how good I am at convincing her that if I don't read any books for naptime, that we'll get to read more for bedtime (instead of our usual 1)!
TtownAnne May 23rd, 2005, 12:55 PM Dawn, you're not alone, we read books at naptime every day, unless she's going down for a nap unusually late for some reason and I don't want to add to the sleep deprivation. Otherwise, we read 2 books for nap and 2 books for bedtime. I figure there are lots more harmful things we could be doing, there's nothing wrong with reading!

Yes, so true Anne! :) And yes, that's the only time I don't read books for naptime too...is when she takes a nap unusually late for some reason. Glad I'm not alone!
LISA May 23rd, 2005, 01:10 PM Naps?? what are those?
I only read to Paige at bedtime, even when she did take naps.
MamaGoofy May 23rd, 2005, 01:29 PM I don't do books at naptime but I do at bedtime. I let David pick out the book. Most nights I only read one. If we get into bed early I will read 2 or 3.
Karly May 23rd, 2005, 01:32 PM This is us, too. :)Dawn, you're not alone, we read books at naptime every day, unless she's going down for a nap unusually late for some reason and I don't want to add to the sleep deprivation. TtownAnne May 23rd, 2005, 01:38 PM And I forgot to mention that Caroline generally picks the books, unless for some reason she tells me to "surprise her" and I get to pick. :)
Nichole May 23rd, 2005, 01:51 PM We read books at both naptime and bedtime, too. It's usually only one book at naptime, though.
LISA May 23rd, 2005, 03:14 PM how many and who chooses it. :)
Forgot to answer this :)
I pick the books at the library, usually 1 per night, Paige however gets to pick what book she wants me to read to her :)
Paige loves it when I read to her, but if we're bored and I ask her if she wants me to read to her say in the afternoon she freaks because she associates it with bedtime and thinks I'm about to put her to bed
Nichole May 23rd, 2005, 03:19 PM Oops, I forgot to answer that part, too. :duh:
We take turns picking, sometimes Jackson picks and sometimes I pick but ask what he wants to read. It's generally easier for me to pick (and ask what he wants) because it goes faster and then we don't end up with 20 books.
Dawn May 23rd, 2005, 03:31 PM but if we're bored and I ask her if she wants me to read to her say in the afternoon she freaks because she associates it with bedtime and thinks I'm about to put her to bed
 Lisa, that is too cute...
bunybomb May 23rd, 2005, 06:40 PM she tells me to "surprise her" and I get to pick. :)
That is so cute Anne. If only Alex would allow me to surprise him once in awhile.
We don't read at nap time. It's too short as it is and I want every moment I can get him to sleep. At bedtime we read 2, once in a while it's 3. Alex loves to check out books from the library and insists on taking those to bed with him whether we read them or not.
I love to listen when DH reads to Alex at bedtime. It's not all that often but I fall madly in love with him all over again when he does.
Alyssa May 23rd, 2005, 07:12 PM What is this naptime of which you speak?!
The boys will both still nap occasionally, but we've never read naptime stories mostly b/c naps have never been predictable. When they do nap now, it's because they have clearly demonstrated they need them and so they're just out like a light...so no books necessary. When we do try to force a nap, which rarely works, we send them to bed with books anyway so they can do their own storytime and sleep may or may not come.
We're iffy on the nighttime story. Bad parenting admission here, but the treat now is to watch an inning of the Red Sox before bed. They both go to bed with books too, and we do read a lot during the day at random and they have books & magazines they "read" themselves in the car, so I'm not at all worried about their lack of exposure to books. To different books, maybe. We have probably 200 and they want the same ones over and over. Both kids, same books too. I try to hide those ones and take out new ones, but it doesn't work too well. The plus is Aidan actually "reads" to Colin now - nearly verbatim on a few books! :aok:
Nanley May 27th, 2005, 01:08 AM John doesn't get stories at naptime, but he does at bedtime. It's usually three books, and pretty much always the same three--Goodnight Moon, Time for Bed, and The Going to Bed Book. John chooses the order, and he always chooses the same order.
bunkie68 May 28th, 2005, 02:46 AM Well, being as how Julian has declared naps optional (and pretty much always opts not to take them  ), I don't read to him at naptime. We do read at bedtime, though - usually three or four or five books, sometimes more. He gets to pick, but mama says when it's time to turn off the light. :heee: He grumps and whines for another book, but settles down pretty quickly when he realizes mama isn't in fact going to turn the light back on and read some more.
Dori May 29th, 2005, 06:17 AM We read two books before naptime and five books before bedtime. Lauren picks one book each time and then I pick the rest. Its a great way to wind her down. I like Sandra Boyton books and 10 Little Ladybugs is a favorite. I bought Snug as a Bug right before we came back to Ireland I like that one too!
Bev May 29th, 2005, 09:41 AM No naps here. We read books at bedtime. And by we I mean me because no way will Mason let DH read them unless he's been away for work for a week or so. He gets two "talking books" where he can tell me what all the dinosaurs/fish are, then it is on to the stories. He will usually bring 5 or 6 but I only read 2 usually unless he's wide awake for some reason. Lately they are all Robert Munsch books: More Pies and Smelly Socks. If necessary we'll read We Share Everything and Paper Bag Princess. If he's not on that kick we can mix it up a bit. He has read More Pies to me before, and it's fun to hear him read it. I need to get a movie of it. :)
