If your teen gets an allowance, does he or she just get it or are they expected to do a set amount of chores for it?
We're having some difficulties with this here
and if you don't mind, how much does your teen get?
TIA :)
ETA- what chores are they asked to do?

Natascha is expected to do some chores for her allowance. She doesn't do them all the time and does need constant reminders. So we are struggling, too.
We expect her to
*clean her room on weekends to the point that I don't have to hover to reach the bed
*put her dirty clothes in the hamper
*lay the table
*take care of her turtoise
She can earn extra money(25 cents) if she helps around the house like watering the garden, washing the car.
She gets $10 allowance right now ($1 for each age year).

I don't give the boys allowance. We don't get free money, so we feel they shouldn't either in preparation for being in the real world :) They can earn money by doing chores around the house. We are set up on a little different of a system. They earn 'points' and then can exchange points for money, TV time, movie rentals etc.

Shel, care to share your point system? how many points = a cd etc? I feel jipped/frustrated here, if we give Cass an allowance of say $20 a week she still asks for money for shoes, clothes, cd's, movies etc and if I don't give in well I'm the worst mother there ever was and I'm the only mom who is so strict blah blah blah  :tearhair: her room is a bomb shelter seriously, Its been a battle since she was 6 yrs old and I kid you not, every day it's "have you cleaned your room?" every day! we even took the door off her room at one point, still got us no where.. she puts out the garbage/recycle,vacumes,folds socks, empty dishwasher...never ever just does her chores, we must nag and nag and hear her constant bitching about having to do it :tearhair:

Sean is 13 and gets $20 a month. He pays for his entertainment, and special items. He can earn extra money by working ($5/hr). He does have chores: emptying the dishwasher, cleaning the kennel (daily) and taking trash to curb (twice a week). His chores are not tied to the allowance. Chores are part of being in a family. The allowance is a way for him to budget his expenses and a way for us to not give him money during the month!
If he is out of money and his friends are going to the movie?? Sorry! Actually, he is pretty good and will usually work to get extra money. His room? I gave up and I think we are both much happier :)

We are struggling with this too. Dylan is 10 and we have a list of chores posted that she is to complete either daily or weekly. DH has told her when she starts doing them without being nagged and putting up a fuss, he will pay her $5/week. So far, she gets no money.
Daily
Clean her room
Feed the dog in the evening
Set the table at dinner
Clear the dinner dishes and load in the dishwasher
Weekly
Pick up dog poop
Wipe down her bathroom
Do her laundry
Other things she is expected to do is empty the dishwasher when clean and take a shower every other day.
We are so sick of hearing her excuses of why she can't do one or the other. Right now she is grounded for not doing her chores and instead sitting there watching tv after she had been told. She hasn't yet realized how much easier it is on herself to spend the little amount of time to get her chores done. So instead she misses out on doing lots of stuff and spending lots of time in her room. No phone, no tv, no computer, no friends, no money for the ice cream truck, etc..........

My almost 13 yr old takes care of his siblings for an hour while I go to work and dh comes home. Most times it is less than an hour twice a week. He also must keep his room clean, put his laundry away and bring down dirty(does not always happen!) He also trades off with his brother sweeping and dish detail. I buy him a phone card for his tracfone that he bought, and depending on how the month has gone he will get a new xbox game $19.99 or less. So far I have only purchased 1 phonecard 100 minutes and he has made it last 2.5 months.
