View Full Version : Big girl bed and crib in same room (2 kids)??

I'm already getting nervous about this....we're thinking about moving Emily to a twin mattress by the end of the year, and I'm worried about her trying to either play with all her toys, or poking Molly through the crib to wake her up. She can also open her bedroom door herself, and they have a door from their room into a bathroom. I will put doorknob covers on that door, but DH doesn't like the idea of putting one on the inside of their bedroom door. I guess I'll leave it off, and if she comes to get him during the night we'll see if he changes his mind!

So my question is for those who have 2 kids sharing a room, and moved one to a big kid bed while the other was still in the crib. Any trouble with transition? Emily is starting to regress a bit (we've been really praising Molly a lot because she's starting to cruise & getting ready to walk) and has even wanted to sleep in Molly's crib a couple times. She always happily goes to her own crib once I show her where Dolly is, but I worry about her after we move her.

Am I totally overthinking this?

We just moved our kids into the same room 2 weeks ago now.

it was Aidens room, and we just moved Rileys crib into there.

It was a bit of a novelty for both of them for a few days, so we would put Riley to sleep first, then take Aiden in there after him and show him Riley sleeping and explain that he had to leave him alone... he did poke a few times, and giggled alot.....

But after about 5 days the novelty wore off... now we are going on the 4th night where they were both put in there awake and put themselves to sleep with out too much bother to each other.. it takes about 30 minutes for them both to get to sleep, but to me I can handle that considering they are in seperate beds and not being loud about it!..

So I say overall a success..... wasnt' as bad as I thought it was going to be! The only problem I have to say now is they wake up so early, before Riley used to stir around 6am and then puthimself back to sleep for anther hour and a half.. but now he wakes up, see's Aiden there and is so excited he screams and wakes up Aiden and they giggled and play and call out my name to come and get them!... Annoying on my part... but tolerable.. I am hoping the novelty of this will wear off soon too!

Bump! I am hoping more moms have some experience with this, as I have Ava's old crib in her bedroom along with the toddler bed she now uses, and hope that our new Claire will be able to sleep in there when she moves out of my room at 5/6 months or so.

We'd already transitioned Sierra to her twin bed by the time Sean was born. The crib just was in her room still, but not being used. When Sean was a few months old we started putting him in the crib. Sierra didn't really seem to care. She thought it was fun to climb in during the day when she was playing, but she never bothered him at night. It didn't really end up being a problem for us.

Same here. Jack is away with DH right now, so I've taken this time to get Patrick into a bedtime routine and sleeping in his crib (which is going great!). We'll see how it goes when Jack comes back on Sunday.

I kinda wish we'd moved Emily to a big girl bed before Molly was born, but she was only 15 months old and still not walking. We'll see how things go on vacation and go from there. Tomorrow night they are staying with my parents (our first overnight since Emily was born!!!) and Emily is sleeping on my sister's daybed, with my mom or sister on the pop up trundle next to her. We'll see how it goes....

Isn't that funny? I wished we HADN'T moved Sierra. She was about 17 months old when we did and it was really hard to get her to sleep in her own bed. Life would have been easier, I think, if we would have waited.

Thanks for sharing your experience here :aok: We ae getting prepared to transition Blake and Jordan into sharing a room and I am nervous! Jordan isn't a good sleeper and Blake is, so I am afraid of messing things up.

As I figured...I TOTALLY overthought this whole issue!! Last weekend we picked up a toddler bed from my best friend, and brought it home. Since it was the same weekend we'd left the girls overnight with my folks for the first time, Emily wasn't in any mood to try something new. We put the crib mattress it in, and she refused to lay down.

We left it set up (frame only) in our living room all week, and she played in it every day. Sunday (a week after we got it) she called it her "big girl bed" like we'd been doing each day, and I said "Do you want to sleep in your big girl bed?" She seemed really excited about it, so I got her crib mattress and she climbed right in then asked for her pillow. She seemed really ready, so I pushed her crib into the dining room, carried in the toddler bed, and she laid right down. Took a 2 hour nap in it, no trouble, and has slept in it just fine!! The girls still go to bed at the same time, and she hasn't gotten out once. Last night they went to bed at 8:45/9pm, which was late for them, and slept til almost 8:30 this morning. She loves it, and tells everyone that "Em'ly has big girl bed!" She "helped" me take her crib apart Sunday afternoon and told it bye bye, explaining that she had a big girl bed now.

Now, if I can just keep Molly out of it....she's almost 13 months old, and loves climbing into it.

However, don't get totally comfortable yet, Amy! (not that I'm trying to burst your bubble, just keep you informed) - my pediatrician told us in our excitement over transitioning Caroline from a crib not to be too excited over an initial period of "perfect sleeping" and patting ourselves on the back because it's going so well. It takes them a while to be able to "realize" they can get out of it and get brave enough to try it!

Yep, this was our experience. Jack slept in his big boy bed for about 3 months before he realized he could come looking for us!

Just to update, Jack & Patrick are sleeping in the same room comfortably! I put Patrick to bed first and Jack never wants to climb in until the morning when they both wake up. There have been nights though where one wakes the other up, but I guess that's inevitable.

Anne, I laughed this morning to myself because I thought "sure as I just posted, I'm jixing myself!" We did put knob covers on the inside of her door, and the door from their room into the bathroom, so she can't get out, but I just don't want her poking Molly if she wakes up. It's bad enough if she wakes up first she'll call over to Molly "Moooolllly!! What doin'? Wake up Molly!" LOUDLY...it's funny, but at the same time, I want to scream!
