Does your child have any concept of money?

In Canada we do not have a $1 or $2 bill, we have coins. The $1 coin is called a Loonie because there is a loon on it, and the $2 naturally became the Twonie.

At Mason's daycare (Montessori) they wear uniforms every day but on Fridays if you pay $1 you can wear regular clothes.
Last Friday I raided DH's coin dish and put out 3 quarters, 2 dimes and a nickel. I said to Mason, "Okay, there's your Dollar to put in the jar at school." His response: "Where's the big dollar?" So I had to explain that all that money was the same as a big dollar/loonie. One time I gave him 10 dimes but that didn't require such a big explanation, because they were all the same.

I have been trying to teach him to identify the coins based on the picture on them: penny=brown with a maple leaf, nickel has a beaver, dime has a boat, quarter has an elk, $1 is gold, $2 is gold and silver.

not that I know of. :dunno: The girls get a weekly allowance, $1.00 for Emily & 50 cents for Molly, all in quarters. Beyond that, I have no idea!! Emily just knows she get 4 quarters to put in her piggy bank, and two go in Molly's.

Ethan just knows money buys stuff and it's fun to put in the piggy bank  . I think he knows what most of the coins are but doesn't put any value or anything on them (ok, as I was writing this, he came over and told me what it all was but as I said, I don't think he place value on it).

Saxon has no idea about $$$.

It looks weird when you write out twonie. It sounds like it should be spelled toony.

Lexie got one of those kids coin sorters for Christmas and we started teaching her:

Quarter is the largest and most money = 25 cents
Dime is the smallest = 10 cents
Nickel is medium = 5 cents
Penny is brown and 1 cent

She also likes to go shopping and I always tell her we have to pay for items.

Well yeah, we spell it toonie, but just in case I wanted to get the idea across that it was two! :silly:

Dh has been teaching him the values of the coins. He gets them mixed up at times but does pretty well. He prefers dollars instead of quarters, dimes, nickles or pennies!

Amy, your girls really get allowance already? WOW!

Alex just knows its money. It didn't even occur to me to start teaching him about it yet. I guess I better start soon.

I knew that Jada and Justin knew what money is but didn't think they had any concept of it. Well last night Justin started crying because Jada had a quarter and he had a nickel. So I believe they think the 'biggest' coin is better but I've never told them anything about it. Just 'the bigger must be better' theory I guess.
