I'll give my kids any % milk in a pinch, but we buy them 2%. What about you?

Since Joe is so small, our ped said to keep giving him whole milk.

Emma is still under 2 (21 months) so I still give her whole milk. Since she is only in the 5 percentile in weight I plan on continuing with whole milk even after she turns 2.

Madelynn and Ava both drink whole milk. Last summer the ped was worried about Madelynn's weight, because she lost some, so he told us to keep her on it. Now she's ok, but since Ava's drinking whole she is too. I cannot wait until they drink 2 or 1 % or skim. I hate whole milk, so I never buy milk for myself, because everyone else will drink the whole, so mine goes bad.

Aidan drinks skim, since that is what I buy for Chris. Norah & Elliott drink whole.

Gabrielle drinks 2% most of the time, sometimes skim. Her pediatrician (and the nutritionist) said she could have 1%, but since DH drinks 2% it's just easier that way. I will probably drop her to skim (which is what I drink) fulltime when she turns 3 if she's still on the upper end of the weight scale.

Madison is 18 months old and drinks whole milk. Im going to ask her Ped about switching her when we go to her 2 year appointment. We drink 2%. I should say I drink 2% because DH doesnt drink milk at all.

2%. But when we took her off formula, Ashton got whole for a while. We will probably do the same with Alexis.

Aiden is allergic so he doesn't drink any.. but Riley drinks whole, mainly becuase I was told that whole is best for children.

Anna drank whole until 2 years. Now she's on 2%. We drink 1%, so I'll be happy when we can all drink the same milk. :)

Oh, and I'm like Alyssa. I'll give her pretty much any % if that's all that is available.

Amelia isn't quite two yet, so she's still getting whole. However, I'm inclined to keep giving her whole, because she is very skinny. I'll discuss it with her ped when I take her in a few weeks.

Lexie (3 yr + ) gets skim. Doesn't drink too much, but loves yogurt drinks. I also give her whole when we run out.

Benjamin (19 mo) gets whole milk. He's also gotten other varieties in a pinch.

Mason drank homo (whole) until he was 2 and then I promptly switched him over to 1% which is what we drink. I could have kept him on the homo but he drank a ton of it and those :badwords: bags of milk in Ontario are a :badwords: PITA so the less I have to deal with them the better.

Both girls get skim. That's what we drink and they don't seem to like the stuff with more fat. Since they are both healthy weights (and eat other high-fat dairy like cheese), I don't worry about it.

At Alex's 2 year check up our ped recommeded going to skim. That's all we drink so it made it easy. She felt that kids get too much fat as it is and going to skim was a good idea. There is just as much protein and vitamins in skim as there is in whole, 2% or 1% without the fat.

I need to invest in a cow and learn how to reduce the fat my self. Macie (3) drinks 2%, Matthew (17 months) drinks whole milk and Eddie and I drink skim milk. Its a PITA that is forsure.

Jackson is 18 months and drinking whole still...I can't wait until he can have skim...Scott drinks skim and I hate having 2 gallons of milk taking up room in my fridge!

Emily drank whole until Jan when she turned 2. Her pediatrician said since she's of normal weight and eats a lot of cheese and other regular fat items there was no reason she couldn't drink the same milk we do, which is 1%. I specifically asked if it should be 2% for the higher milkfat, and she said the difference is so minimal, why bother buying it special, so 1% it is!!

Molly has been on whole milk now for about 2 weeks, and just turned 1. She doesn't drink it as much as Emily did, but one day we had run out so I gave her 1%, and she sucked it right down. :dunno: I know she should be on whole til age 2. I'll be so glad when I can buy ONE kind of milk!!!

Theresa
May 1st, 2005, 03:35 PM
Ellie (age 3+) and Ian (age 18 months) both drink whole. Once Ian turns 2, I'm going to just give them both the 2% DH and I drink.

Jackson went from whole to 2% when he turned 2, but then I switched him to 1% so I didn't have to keep buying a bunch of different kinds (I compromised and switched myself from skim). However, I just discovered organic milk at Costco, but they only sell 2%, so I'm in a conundrum.

I looooooove milk - could drink it straight from the jug. And it's only Caroline and I that drink milk, DH will only occasionally have it, on cereal or something. I am also amazed at the amount of adults that drink milk. DH and I can't stand the stuff. Before Rayna, we only had it in the house for cooking purposes.

I also had to laugh at Bev calling it Homo milk. That is so Canadian! I was at home visiting my folks and I took my mom to the grocery store. As we were back in that section, she shouted at me to grab a jug of Homo milk! I just about died! Then I couldn't stop laughing!!!

Anyway, Rayna (18 months) gets whole milk.

I think the first time I EVER saw someone drink milk from a glass (as opposed to a bottle or one of those little cartons at school) was at fil's house when DH and I first started dating, it was so gross. No one in my family drinks milk...and then one of our college prof. was so against milk that by the time you got to your sophmore year no one in the entire college was willing to drink milk...so to see an adult drink milk was just so foreign to me.

Beverly, I'm with you! I LOVE milk....I used to go through 2 gallons a week when I was single. It blows my mind that people out there don't like it. But we were raised on milk and water, occasionally kool aid and rarely soda. Emily LOVES milk as well, and I think Molly will do much better once I get her off whole.

Sandy, I bet you wanted to die!

I'll say it again....milk is gross
Its always grossed me out. I've never liked it, as far as I can remember. When I was PG, I craved chocolate milk (the premade 1% kind), but that passed. I will use it (skim) on my cereal, but I dont drink any of it...it just makes the cereal moist.

My mom says she used to have to put my milk in coloured bottles to get me to take one drink, then she just gave up.

Anyway I agree with you completely, I also use it on cereal but don't drink it, I just make the cereal moist (and this is basically only when I crave cereal, which I think has been maybe 5 times in the past 4 years). My grandma hates milk so much that she puts water on her cereal.

Just b/c they don't enjoy drinking it or for some ethical reason? :dunno:

And if you didn't drink milk growing up, what did you drink? And how long will you "force" your kids to drink milk if you think it's gross?

Water. I REALLY like broccoli and cauliflower and ate/eat them a lot, as well as yogurt (daily) so I've always gotten my calcium that way. Oh --I usually have a 4oz glass of calcium fortified OJ in the am, too. And I take a supplement now that i'm an adult.
My mom could never force me to drink milk. She could never force me to eat something I didnt like, for that matter. I am stubborn like that

As far as my kids are concerned, they can drink milk as long as they like. They arent crazy about it (where we go thru crazy amts), but they do like it.

Well this particular professor was very very anti-milk for health reasons, he provided us with a lot of info from medical journals and alternative health sites about how milk actually causes osteoporosis, and other problems anyway, it was pretty convincing. I have two books here, the truth about milk and don't drink your milk that try to prove that the dairy industry has paid off the fda to report milk as healthy...it also goes into the negative health effects. And if you do a search on google for anti-milk you will find many pages against milk. It's pretty controversial and something you would need to make up your own mind on. Just like I'd never try to convince someone to not get vaccines, breast feed if they didn't want to, or cloth diaper I don't plan on trying to convince anyone to stop drinking milk...it's just something we've decided is unhealthy for our kids.

Growing up I drank juice and kool-aid...so not healthy.

And, umm, I actually force my kids to not drink milk...we cut out dairy entirely the first year of Janelle's life from all of our diets...but we didn't stick with it, both of us wish we had but I'm unwilling to give up cheese and dh is unwilling to give up icecream. I give my kids as snacks soy yogurt and rice/soy/almond based cheeses, but they also get dairy when we cook with cheese or dh has ice cream, etc. Janelle eats broccoli at least 4 times a week...I honestly don't remember the last time she didn't wake up in the morning and ask for either broccoli or shrimp for breakfast...yes, breakfast. :dead: I add 1-2 bags of uncooked spinach to every single pasta dish I make and both kids eat that. They are also still both nursing, so they get plenty of fat and calcium that way. And during the winter when they were inside they got fortified (calcium +D) orange juice for the vitamin D, but now that it is warmer they are playing outside for the vitamin D and drinking water.

Jillian, I know this is off the original topic, but since you posted what you did, I have a question for you. I've heard that the hormones they give cows to make them produce milk is what is causing girls to go through puberty and get AF much sooner now then they used to. Is it true? Have you heard anything to that affect?

I've read a lot about that and our pediatrician said she's even seen some 7 year old girls come in w/ budding breasts and thinks it could be attributed to that, as she didnt see this happen prior to when hormones were used.
We dont always buy organic milk, but when we dont, we DO buy hormone free milk. And we always buy hormone-free yogurt for the kids, and cheeses from hormone-free farms.

I've heard this. But on the other hand our pediatrician told us not to use to many processed soy products (so tofu, soy milk, and especially soy formula etc), especially for Janelle. Soy contains natural estrogens and consuming to much of them has also shown to lead to early menstruation and also a higher risk of femal cancers such as uterine cancer and the like. So I'm not exactly sure what you are supposed to do there.

I agree, I have no doubt in my mind that I will have cancer someday...basically everyone in my family has it seems. Though, I don't think soy milk tasts any worse than cow milk (ohh and just for a little TMI I've tasted my own breastmilk as well and it is really really gross...much worse than cow/soy/rice/almond milk, much much worse)...but I think they both taste gross.

Seriously, though, I think I'll have to talk to the ped about the milk thing next time we have a visit. I just don't know what to believe. I don't want my DD going through puberty early, but I want her to be healthy, so what do you do? :dunno:
