View Full Version : They're listening...
Alyssa April 29th, 2005, 12:03 PM Do you have any funny stories that show to you that your kids are paying attention to things you do or say without you really realizing it?
Our latest example is that Aidan and Colin love to play Dunkin Donuts drive through. (Their Dad has a bit of a problem going there. ;) ) That would be one thing, but both of them now pepper the experience by saying – I’ll have a medium coffee, extra milk, 2 splenda.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
jstauffer April 29th, 2005, 12:09 PM I think FIL gives the kids too much junk food when they're staying with him, and I've brought it up to DH a few times recently.
Well yesterday when Sierra asked for a snack, I offered up an apple. She asked me, "mom, is this healthy or is it junk?" Then she proceeded to tell me that "grandpa give me junk food!!"
Brooke April 29th, 2005, 12:52 PM Oh, Rebekah hears and retains EVERYTHING!
She'll be playing and we'll be talking, thinking she's not listening, and she'll pipe in with some related comment.
Karri April 29th, 2005, 02:13 PM Well..I've mentioned this in my journal, but :blush1: Aidan uses the f-bomb as an adjective correctly :blush1: (thanks to his dad).
And proof not only that they listen, but that they watch....Aidan was playing w/ Norah's play purse and pulled out the play debit card and announced that it was money. I was quite shocked and said, "oh? who uses that?" He said, "mommy uses this money to buy stuff all the time!" :lol2: he's onto me :blush1:
Jeni April 29th, 2005, 02:22 PM  Karri!
Stacey April 29th, 2005, 02:22 PM Maia knows which one the "money card" is too.
She is a master of pretending like she's not listening, but hearing everything. I'll try to think of some stories.
Stacy April 30th, 2005, 07:37 PM :lol2: Aidan!
Theresa April 30th, 2005, 08:46 PM Ellie knows how to use the money card, too! I gave her one of those "fake" credit cards we get in the mail and I caught her swiping it on something! :faint:
One time, our toilet overflowed. I rarely swear, but as I was cleaning it up with a towel, I was repeating "Dammit! Dammit!" I was so mad! Well, a couple days later, I'm cleaning the bathroom and there was some water on the floor. Ellie gets a towel and starts wiping it and saying, "Dammit! Dammit!" There goes my mother-of-the-year award! :lol2:
TtownAnne April 30th, 2005, 09:51 PM Caroline plays McDonald's drive-thru with her Matchbox cars. "I'd like a chicken sandwich, french fries, and a sprite please. thanks!" :lol2:
Karly April 30th, 2005, 11:15 PM Anne! That was what I was going to post! We're driving down the road, and Ty turns his head toward the window and says, "I'd like a taco, and one chili cheese beeto." :lol2:
The other day I was trying to get him to climb into his carseat. He moves so slowly some times and loves to putz around. Anyway, I said to him, "Ty, COME ON! We don't have all day to screw around here!" Then, he looks at me and says, "Why don't we have time to screw around, momma?"
milliez May 1st, 2005, 01:21 PM The other day Kenny started talking about something and it sounded like he was saying "incision", and then he'd talk about him and Nicholas playing together, etc. Well, I figured out that what he was saying was what a good DECISION it was for us to have him and Nicholas so close in age and that now they play together and have a lot of fun with each other. So sweet.
I'll try to think of more.

Lady E May 5th, 2005, 10:00 AM Yesterday Justin went in the fridge and grabbed a pudding not knowing that it was open so of course he spilled it all over the place. Well Jada went over and looked at the spilled pudding and said "oh God! Something else for me to clean up" . :lol2: I laughed so hard that I forgot I was upset a Justin for getting something without asking for it first. I guess she's heard that before...
sheila May 5th, 2005, 11:14 AM I recently put one of Maggie's toys into time out because it hit Katie. Maggie walked over and lectured the toy... "We don't hit. Its not nice. You hurt Katie. You need to 'pologize to my sister for hitting her"
Alyssa May 5th, 2005, 11:27 AM I recently put one of Maggie's toys into time out because it hit Katie. Maggie walked over and lectured the toy... "We don't hit. Its not nice. You hurt Katie. You need to 'pologize to my sister for hitting her":lol: Colin sends us all to the corner when he sees fit. :silly:
bunybomb May 5th, 2005, 11:32 AM Dylan is into Teen Titans. She loves to watch it in our room before bed without Alex. On Monday, she asked at dinner if she could watch the show by spelling the title "T-E-E-N".....before she could even finish....Alex was jumping up from the table shouting "yeah, we're watching Teen Titans". Getting away from her little brother backfired that time.
Stacey May 5th, 2005, 11:37 AM These are so funny.
Sometimes Maia forgets to flush the potty or wash her hands after using the bathroom. I've been telling her that those things are all part of going to the potty. She's also started saying "kick your booty." I'm not sure where she picked that up because it's not something I say. She said it while washing her hands after pottying one day, and I asked her not to say it anymore. She told me that saying it was part of going to the potty. I had to laugh.
When Cole was younger and Maia would try to mother him - usually by taking things that she dubbed dangerous away from him - I'd tell her that I could handle it. One day Cole was taking an ornament off the Christmas tree, and Maia went over there to take it away, telling him it wasn't a toy. When I tried to intervene, Maia turned around and held her hand up to me saying, "Mom, it's OK. I can handle it. I got this." :lol2: The part that made me laugh and roll my eyes the most was that Maia had another ornament in HER hands the whole time.
Stacey May 5th, 2005, 11:41 AM Maia lets us know when we need a time out as well. She will also yell at me that I have "to be nice to Mimi's princess." I've already thanked my mom for that one. Of course, this is after I've done something awful like tell Maia that she'll have to wait until after lunch for a treat.
Hannabanana May 5th, 2005, 11:51 AM Little ears ... big mouths indeed ... nothing like going through the grocery store and hearing my 3yo say to her father "Daddy, do you need some more coke for your rum & cokes?" :spit:
bunkie68 May 5th, 2005, 11:57 AM These are hilarious!
Julian picks up EVERYTHING. He's constantly telling me something he's heard me say before. I'll have to try to think of some specific examples.
bunybomb May 5th, 2005, 12:21 PM "Daddy, do you need some more coke for your rum & cokes?" :spit:
I had a glass of wine with dinner last night and Alex continued to ask over and over "Mommy, you drinking you beer"?
Brookamy May 5th, 2005, 10:58 PM Great thread.
