View Full Version : **WARNING**: Secure Your Furniture To The Walls!!!
Suzi April 7th, 2005, 11:52 PM When Julia wakes from her nap she plays in her room for a while before she calls for me. This afternoon I knew she was up but she hadn't called me yet and I heard this HUGE THUD from two flights away and then screaming! I flew up the stairs as fast as I've ever run before and found Julia with her 4-drawer chest of drawers toppled over on her!! I grabbed the chest and pulled it up and when I did, all the drawers just fell out on top of her!! I was absolutely frantic and had to pull her out from underneath it all instead of getting it off of her.
She was VERY shaken up (as was I!) and cried for a good while. I was afraid she was hurt but after she calmed down, it seems her only injury is to the top of her foot, where she got two big scratches and it's a little swollen. She didn't favor it all all tonight so I think she's quite fine.
I never worried about getting those straps to secure Julia's furniture to the walls - she's not a climber at all. Besides that, I never DREAMED she could get the dresser pulled on top of her - it's so low to the ground and it seems so steady! After I got the dresser all put back together I opened the bottom two drawers and it was amazing how easily the thing tipped. Lesson learned - SECURE YOUR FURNITURE TO THE WALLS!!
TODAY!!!!!
Nanley April 8th, 2005, 01:34 AM OMG, how scary! I'm glad Julia is okay. Thanks for the warning. We haven't secured our furniture yet (John *just* started walking), but this is good incentive for us to get our act together.

Dennis April 8th, 2005, 09:56 AM Yikes! That is scary!
bunybomb April 8th, 2005, 11:18 AM How scary Suzi! I'm glad that Julia is ok. Poor things, you both got quite a scare.
Thanks for posting this reminder. I secured a small shelf that Alex has in his room and noticed a few weeks ago it had come out of the wall. I still haven't fixed it. It will be fixed this weekend.
Mary April 8th, 2005, 09:22 PM How frightening! I'm so glad she is ok! We secured everything before the kids were born because I was so paranoid about it happening.

NickiB April 8th, 2005, 09:27 PM I am so glad that Julia was OK. That is sooooo scary! I will have to find some brackets to secure K's furniture.
~Deborah~ April 10th, 2005, 08:02 PM Glad that your daughter is ok:pray:. Joshua has never tried to climb his dresser but I *KNOW* that Kyle is VERY different so we are not taking any chances. He already has mastered climbing his change table so that went out of his room on saturday and we bought a new dresser for Joshua so that the one that matches Kyle's crib can go in his room.
We went looking for the brackets today and couldn't find them. We tried 3 different hardware stores :angrywife:. Gotta go to Walmart for sure.

Us too, my brother pulled a tv down on himself when he was about 4, and all the blood (he ended up just needing stitches in his forhead and lip, but both those injuries bleed a ton, and I was only 6) is still fresh in my mind, so this was my big safety issue.

I didn't know hardware stores sold baby proofing stuff, we always buy stuff at toys r us/babys r us.
Suzi April 12th, 2005, 03:27 PM Believe it or not, I usually find baby-proofing items CHEAPER at TRU than at Lowe's or Walmart!

 Home depot sells baby proofing stuff here in Canada.
LISA April 13th, 2005, 08:41 AM Poor Julia and mommy :bighug:
this very exact thing happened to Paige a couple months ago with a very tall lingerie dresser and I felt aweful, she climbed onto it with the help of her play kitchen which we since moved out but dh still hasn't bolted it to the wall, I've also had a hard time finding the brackets, we went to HD and the associate looked at me like I had 3 heads  I might head to Toronto and check it out at this store
http://baby.securechannel.ca/Results.asp or improvise with a different bracket :dunno:
~Deborah~ April 13th, 2005, 09:05 AM Lisa...that is where I am going to go too. I buy tons of things there all the time. They are in Mississauga off Dundas (ie hwy 5) beside Costco and across from home outfitters :),
Let me know if you want me to pick them up for you.

I will have to look there...we are looking for something to lock our tri-fold closets with.
Suzi April 13th, 2005, 02:21 PM Safety 1st does make something to lock bi- and tri-fold doors, I have them on our closet doors. They work perfectly!! You'd have to buy two sets for tri-fold doors (one for each fold) but that's no biggie...
