I am reading about people taking baby aspirin to reduce the chances of miscarriage. What does the aspirin do to help in that area?
TIA

Sandy - I think it thins your blood just a little bit but enough to help with blood flow to the fetus and through the placenta. It reduces your blood's clotting. Plus it may help if you have some antibiody syndrome. This explains it - http://www.conceivingconcepts.com/learning/articles/aspirin.html
My sister had 2 confirmed (and one unconfirmed) miscarriages last year. Twice, she didn't find out until she was 9-10 weeks along and had to have a D&C. Both times the baby didn't progress to the point of having a heartbeat. In one it was just an empty sack. In the second there was a fetal pole and nothing else. They tested the DNA of the tissue from the 2nd one and it was normal.
She had lots of testing done - 12 vials of blood and a uterine biopsy to check for a luteal phase defect. And everything is normal. The perinatologist told her that she has a 70% chance of carrying a baby to term now (not much worse that "regular people") and that she should just keep trying. Her OB told her to take one baby aspirin a day and to try again.
So that's where they are. :dunno: Her DH is scared to try again but I know she did start the baby aspirin a couple of weeks ago so they will try again at some point.

Most all assisted reproductive technology methods use baby aspirin as part of the protocol. It's safe enough to do on your own and you can take it through the first trimester but need to stop at 12/13 weeks.

I just bought a bottle of children's aspirin and have started taking it in the morning w/ my prenatal vitamin. I am not pregnant yet (that I know of) but we are trying. I just want to confirm w/ those in the know around here that it is something to take while trying to concieve rather than just once we get a positive pregnancy test, correct? My research tells me so, but I just want to check w/ y'all.
TIA!

Sandy, I took it when TTC Avery. I had read that it thickens the uterine lining, making it more hospitable for implantation. My OB had me stop it after my first prenatal visit.
You're taking the 81 mg dose, right?

Yes, baby aspirin is okay when TTC. It thins the blood slightly allowing for easier implantation. :aok: GOOD LUCK!!

I haven't heard about taking baby aspirin to help prevent m/c or any of that. However, I do know that I took baby aspirin through out my entire pregnancy so it is safe to do so after 12 or 13 weeks.

Hi Ladies,
I was also looking into baby asprin.... I had my son 7 wks ago yesturday.... I had him 2 months eary by emerg, c-section he was not growing..... I was 29 wks 5 days..... But when he was born he was more like 24 or 25 wks.... He was taken to the hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto..... He lived for 4 days but died of sever preematurity and multi organ failure...... After the autopsy they said it was his placenta, it had blood vesil clots..... The blood wasn't able to flow and he started to fail.... The only thing that got me to the hospital was I had high blood pressure.... The next day he was born and my life has been forever changed....
I have done a lot of looking things up on the net and was happy to have found a board were I can ask a question.... I heard that baby asprin was good to help thin the blood but then I also heard that it may cause a problem with ovulation??? Do you know if this is true???? Dh and I have been ttc 4 yrs before I got pregnant with my son...... I don't normaly drink but was at a friends Jack and Jill and I ended up drinking a lot.... I was also doing an OPK and was to "O" that weekend..... I just found out that alcohal is also a blood thinner.... I don't want to become an alcohlic or anything but after 4 yr of ttc and all it took was one night of drinking???
I wish I new of this sooner my son may still be alive today. Any help on the topic I'd be so greatful.....:ura1:

Amanda, I'm sorry for your loss.
Baby aspirin does not cause problems with ovulation. Of course if you have problems ovulating then taking aspirin is not going to help that problem (or hurt it). Aspirin merely thins the blood and in the even that you have any slight clotting issues, it helps the embryo implant and stick.
Given your loss, you REALLY need to talk to your doctor about being tested for thrombolytic issues. Since the placenta had clots, it's quite likely that you have one of several auto-immune disorders that causes problems with blood clots (and subsequent miscarriage and/or still-birth and/or infant death. It is a simple blood test - they will take several vials of your blood and run a recurrent pregnancy loss panel on it. The simple fix is to take heparin shots throughout a pregnancy, through 6-weeks postpartum.
I am quite familiar with this type of disorder, I have it. feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Good luck to you and again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm not pregant and there's no placenta????.... I should have the blood results in 2 more weeks..... and still waiting for a call from the high risk hospital..... I just got my first AF since I had my son..... So one cycle down one more to go...... I can't wait to get started again I don't want to go back to work until I'm pregnant!!!!!
