View Full Version : Bow experts: how do you keep them in?

I thought I would post this here since I know there are a few bow experts that frequent the clothing section. :)

Emma finally has enough hair that I can put some hair pretties in but they don't last more than a few seconds since she automatically pulls them out. I bought some curly loops from Gymborree and then some bows on alligator clips off ebay thinking that they would last longer. Her hair is still very fine so they come out easily. As soon as I put one in , she says "Uh Oh" and pulls it out. Any advice on how to get her to keep them in. Thanks in advance. :)

Just subscribing. I'm having a horrible time keeping Riley's prettys in. She knows, too, that when I ask her where her pretty is, she immediately reaches ontop of her head to pull it off. And then she places it back ontop her head like that's where it belongs. It's so frustrating! I'm sorry you're going through it, too, Eva, but I'm glad I'm not alone!

Anna HATES having anything in her hair... so I just don't put anything in it. I figure that maybe someday she'll want bows or barrettes. I'll just be patient until then.

As far as getting things to stay in without falling out on their own...the only thing I've found that works really well for Isabelle is some little clear rubber bands they sell in the kids section at Walmart (thanks to Shel for recommending those!) If I've got another bow, I'll usually put it up in the little band first, and then put the other ribbon or whatever on top of it.

Getting her to leave it in...now she'll usually leave it in because she like it...when she was younger, I needed to make sure I had a really interesting toy in both of her hands and keep her really occupied with it for several minutes after putting things in to keep her from pulling it right out (did the same thing with hats, both for her and Rebecca, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't)

We started out small. I bought the Gel bands at walmart. ( they stick to themselves not to hair) THey stay in really well and I would just put her up in a little thing on the top of her head..Just getting her used to the feel of something in. I often would put her on the counter in front of the mirror while I did it so she could see what was happening and know how pretty she was. Shortly after that I started out with really small bows that I just placed in along with the gel band. In fact I still use the Gel bands as they hold really well in FINE hair and then I place the bow in over it....let me see if I have some pictures of our steps

I will use some of my niece since I don't have the one's of Ally loaded.
Here Sydney is with just the top knot. no bow or fancy's because she would have pulled them out.

Same in this one..we did a pony tail with her but still just the gel band

Here my sister tried some very simple bows and she left them in!

Thanks so much, Jayne and Eleanor. I will definately look for those gel bands.

Emma has about the same amount of hair as the first few pictures so I will definately try just the Gel bands first. :)

that is what we do, too....i put the bands in before the clips. AND whenever I see her reaching for a barette, i stop her hand, push it back down, and tell her "no, leave your hair bow alone."

I don't know if you shop at walmart but I know they have them there. I believe they are 300 for something like $1.88

Target has just started carrying the gel bands, too.

As for keeping them in, just simple repetition repetition repetition repetition! Caroline started wearing barrettes at a very young age because she has a HUGE amount of hair (born that way, full head of hair from day 1 with her hairline almost meeting her eyebrows! ) So once I started putting them in, if she pulled them out we'd stop playing for a minute or stop walking or doing whatever and I put them right back in! After enough times she realized Mommy wanted those things in there, and it kept her hair out of her eyes enough to see, so she left them alone.

Another repitition here... It took probably 4-5 months before Julia finally got it that the hair ponies are staying IN.

I clip the bows to her bands in her pigtails, not to her actual hair...her hair is too fine and they slip right out.

I was going to suggest clipping to the elastic. Not that I have a little girl...but I have been known to put my homemade bows in Parker's hair and an elastic is the only way he will keep it in :)

I haven't even tried bows

I just use these small ponytail holders... Carolyn has never tried to take them out. I keep forgetting to buy bows
