View Full Version : moving from crib to bed

I know we are not ready for this yet but I am thinking way ahead.

We are going to most likely be moving shortly after Emma turns 2 (she is 16 mos now) and right now I am thinking I do not want to haul the crib with me because if we wait to switch her to a bed, then we have to either store the crib or sell it (and I am not sure I want to sell it). Right now I could just leave it in MILs house here.

When would I want to start transitioning to a bed? Chances are, if things go as planned, there are going to be a lot of changes going on between now and then. We are most likely going to be selling this place and then renting while we finish MILs house and then possibly living there if we get it done early enough.

She has not attempted to climb out of the crib yet so I do not want to rush it. Well, she did get her foot to a place where if she pushes her self high enough she would flip over but i am not sure she has that strength yet. But I want her used to sleeping in a bed so that is not a strange thing either when we move.

Any suggestions?

You want my HONEST suggestion? Keep her in a crib as long as you can. So if that means its a PITA to move a crib with you, then so be it. Because I gotta tell you, putting a child in a bed is opening a whole new friggin can o' worms that you really dont want to do. You're going to introduce getting up in the night & getting up earlier. We moved Aidan because we had to, and now, I will NOT move the twins unless they outgrow the weight limit on the cribs. and when they learn to climb out, they are getting crib tents  (i am serious).

I agree with Karri. Especially if you'll be in more than one place in a short amount of time. The crib will be something familiar and comfortable for her in the midst of all of the changes.

How do you know the weight limit? We bought the crib used. And for the tents, are they bought based on the make of the crib? I am going to have to do some research on that since I really have not heard of them other than here.

After reading some other threads, I figured that might be what the suggestion was  I am not totally ruling out wanting to take the crib but it just seems like it is going to be a pain! She is a great sleeper (well nights, we are working on naps) and I do not want to ruin that.

I dont know about the weight limit (mine is in my manual). I would think you could just call the MFG. of your crib and find out :dunno:
As for the tent, the ones I've seen are not crib specific...they are for any standard crib.

I would totally agree with what has been said. Keep her in the crib. It will be familiar and not such a hassle for you!!

I started thinking about it more... and the crib we did get does convert to a headboard/foot board so I guess it would not be too hard to store the extra parts.

we just moved with at (at the time) 18 month old. i was considering doing the same thing, but most people highly recommended we put his crib up in his new room to help him adjust, rather than making all those changes at once. This is what we did. Now I need to look at moving him because his little brother will soon need the crib. But at least he's adjusted to the new house now.

I just went through the transition from crib to toddler bed and let me reinforce what everyone here has said - keep Emma in the crib as long as possible!! It was a VERY difficult two weeks with Julia and she is an otherwise PERFECT sleeper. Keep her in the crib!
