Ok, I don't really know where this fits, so if it shouldn't be here, feel free to move it :babysmile

Hello and welcome to the Once Upon a Life Cloth Diapering thread. Maybe we could start by giving an introduction, names, children, our cloth diapering history, favorite diapers, anything else you like!

Name: Carla
Children: Ethan Elijah, May 6th 2002, baby due August 6th 2004
Why I Cloth Diaper: There are countless reasons. Enviromental, frugality, for fun, cuteness, to be different, ect...
Our History: I started in August of 2002. I wasn't sure if I'd like it so I was using folded flannel receiving blankets in crappy covers. I started buying off ebay and finding things at second hand stores, and the rest is history!
Diapers of Choice: Overall, prefolds with pull on covers are my favorites. I use other things, but this is my mainstay.

Children: Madison born Dec. 31, 2002

I'm a newbie to cloth diapering. So new, in fact that I only have 2 of them. Both Fuzzi Bunz, one's periwinkle, and one's spring green.

I got into it because Maddie had a persistent rash that just wouldn't go completely away... the cloth definitely nipped it in the bud! So I put the first one on her after dinner and the second one for bedtime. It works well for us right now... I may slowly increase my stock... I'm warming my husband up the idea. He's not against it per se, he just doesn't want to have to handle any poopy ones.

I do feel kinda silly only washing 2 diapers at a time... but we'll see.

Children: Morgan Ann- she'll be 2 tommorow- and only wears diapers VERY little anymore :(
Why I Cloth Diaper: hmmm....to be different, environmental reasons, healthier for my baby, $$ factors, etc,etc
Our History: I love it- didn't start until this past spring but will def. be CDing #2 (and more)
Diapers of Choice: Angelwraps AIOs, Fuzzi Bunz

Children: Riley 11.20.02
Why I cloth diaper: Lots of different reasons, because everyone told me that I would hate it, Environmental, I'm addicted to the cute dipes that are out there :)
History: We started when Riley was 4 months old and haven't looked back.
Favorite dipes: I love my fuzzi bunz (so much so, that I am selling them!!....PM me for a discount!) I also love fancypants, and sugarpeas!

Children: Brandon Michael, November 23, 2003

Why I Cloth Diaper: Does "dh made me" count? LOL!!! It was actually his idea!

Our History: We don't really have a history...I started CDing when Bran came home from the hospital and we have ever since (LOL...all 11 days....)

Diapers of Choice: Right now, we use fuzzi bunz, wonderoos, and CPF's with a polar babies cover during the day, and motherease one-sizes at night. I don't really have a favorite yet because all of my dipes are huge on my little 6 1/2 lber....but those wonderoos are too cute!

Children: Rory Samantha, 10.28.01 and Teagan Elizabeth, 04.17.03
Why I Cloth Diaper: Just because, is that a good reason?! Financial, to be different, and because I like it!
Our History: I was doing it while I was PG with Teagan, but got lazy, and quit. :blush1: Started back up about 3 (?) months ago, and love it.
Diapers of Choice: Right now, it's pockets, but I'm slowly branching out! :lol

Hi Everyone :)

Do any cloth diapered toddlers like to take off their diapers? I'm wondering if it's a potty training readiness sign as if he has a wrap on and pees, he takes it off an hands it to me. Once in a while if he's in a wet prefold pinned in a pull on cover, he tries to pull it down. He's never been one to care about being wet. I'd hate to stop using diapers, but if he's ready, I'd like to gently encourage him. We have a potty and he knows what its for even though he's never used it. At least I have another cloth diapered baby to be on it's way :D

~Jenn
December 12th, 2003, 11:13 AM
Carla, Rory does this frequently, and I guess it could be a sign...I don't really take it as one (she's just recently started telling me if she's wet or dirty though), because I know she also just likes to play (with the snaps on the diapers!).

Christy
December 12th, 2003, 01:44 PM
Name: Christy

Children: Maddie~4 and Sara 13 months. Jackson is due 12/31/03

Why I Cloth Diaper: Our first reason was to save money (if I only knew how addicting it would become! ) Then because they are so cute and to be a little different.

Our History: We didn't start cloth diapering Sara until she was about 3 months old. We started w/ Fuzzi Bunz and have branched out from there.

Diapers of Choice: Right now I am into fitteds with covers. I love my puddlecatchers and sugarpeas with either a wool cover or a bummis. I still love my pocket dipes too! Fuzzi Bunz and FancyPants.

Jennie

Name: Jennie

Children: Matt (4.5 yrs and still not night trained but finally day trained), Andrew (4.5 yrs not even close but we might be starting with the help of his OT in the new year!) and Charlie (9.5 mths and the current one in the stash!)

Why I Cloth Diaper: Our first reason was to save money (if I only knew how addicting it would become! ) Then because they are so cute and to be a little different. borrowed from Christy but this is exactly why....

Our History: Tried cloth diapering the twins with a diaper service - the first day they dropped off 180 diapers for a week I just about died. The boys were 5 lbs - we should have waited to start until they were 8-10 lbs but no.... had to do it then and it was a disaster! When we got pregnant with Charlie, the idea popped into my head again and I did some more research and couldn't believe that there were other diapers than prefolds & covers! I bought a few FB and Kissaluvs to try and by 2 mths of age, I was hooked (I also didn't want to give up this time and admit defeat yet again). I got hooked up with Mother of Eden to be a MAD (making a difference) consultant taking FB products to a home party but I sold too much for their idea and they suggested I become a retailer (etailer?) so I opened my own e-store and now I am carrying other CD's, belly casting kits, essential oils, wipes solutions and other related items. I've also recently started discovering fitteds and I'm enjoying the change of pace!

Diapers of Choice: Loving my FB when out & about and at night. At home, I use my Wonderoos (mainly because they leak for us GRRR), fitteds & covers.

I'm just subscribing, because we are TOC in Spring 2004 and I want to use cloth diapers. DH is apalled that I would even consider such a thing with all the more "convenient" options out there. I figure if I work on him a bit, he'll start to see it my way...especially if I can show him how much $$ it will save. I don't think he has clue #1 about how expensive disposables are.

I look forward to reading what you all have to say!

Jennie
December 12th, 2003, 08:34 PM
Hi Cas! I think that once your DH sees the new all-in-ones or pocket diapers out there, he'll change his tune. They are sooooo much easier than the old style pins & cloth that he might be imagining.

FB's are so easy, that the 5 year old I care for can proficeintly change one!

Carla
December 13th, 2003, 08:59 AM
Wow, Brandi, that's cool!

I've been giving thought of turning some of my flat folds into newborn diapers. I have tons of them and I keep entertaining thoughts of what I should do with them as I hardly ever use them. It would save me from buying them, its just to get the ambition to do it :lol2: . Maybe if I ever got around to setting up my sewing area................

Carla
December 15th, 2003, 08:53 AM
Well, I ordered a bunch of stuff from a woman at Amity's. Mostly small covers, but a few diapers (6 NB DiaperRaps, the 2 large ones, 2 small Ecology Kids covers, Unknown WAHM Blues Clues w/Periwinkle outer w/yellow cotton inner, and an Unknown WAHM “Save the Rain Forest” outer w/Velcro, yellow cotton inner, everything was either 50 cents or a dollar). I can't wait to get it as I love getting new to me diapering things!!

I seem to be having a tough time getting shipping estimates lately as I've been waiting a week for someone on Ebay and this other person I've been waiting since the end of last week. I'm hoping it's just that it's that time of year and I'm not getting blown off (by the ebay person...I can always picture someone doing that when something they have on auction goes for a lot lower than they expected). I don't know about other people, but when it comes to selling and buying, I like to get stuff overwith ASAP.

Children: Landon Michael 1 year old

Why I Cloth Diaper: To save money, and for the health of my child(ren).

Our History: I never wanted to CD, but recently came across a website and found out what was actually in disposables... and health problems they can be linked to... So, I decided that I would try it. Got my Fuzzi Bunz last week and I love them!

Diapers of Choice: Well I have only tried FB's. I only have 4 at the moment, but I probably will be getting some more as 4 is just not enough!

Last night was our first night CDing... well he leaked EVERYWHERE! I just used one joey bunz insert, but I don't think that 2 would've even been enough.

Brandi Jo
December 16th, 2003, 11:33 AM
We have to stuff Riley's FB's with a large joeybunz and an infant prefold. At night, we usually use a fitted and a wool cover though, Ash. Just a thought. I know you are new to it all...but you could do a fitted and a cover.

Ashley
December 16th, 2003, 12:28 PM
Honestly Brandi, I don't know what a fitted is? I have seen them advertised...but, still I am clueless! haha I know a cover is what holds in the wetness right?

Child: Gabrielle (will be 1 on January 5th :owow:)
Why I cloth diaper: The chemicals in DD freak me out, I like to be different, and I am ADDICTED!! :blush1:
Our History: We started CDing when Gabrielle was less than 3 weeks I think.
Diapers of Choice: Right now we use Little Lambs AIOs (XL), Happy Heineys (L), Fancy Pants PUL (and 2 fleece pockets on their way) (L), Doodle Bottoms (M), and Fuzzi Bunz (M). I also have 2 diaperbabies (one PUL and one fleece), but I don't use them often. I don't know that I have a favorite of the ones I had.

Does anyone know where you can get cheap used dipes or seconds?

Child: Nick (4 months old)

Why I use Cloth: I didn't want the chemicals in disposables anywhere near Nick's skin. Its cheeper and its better for the environment and it seemed most comfotable for him.

Our History: I researched a lot on diapering during pregnancy. We decided cloth was the best way to go. We bought a little bit of each kind of diaper before Nick was born. We were in disposables until his cord fell off because everything went over the cord and started using cloth after that... we never looked back either.

Diapers of Choice: My new favorites are Motherease. My mom bought me a starter package of those as a gift. IN some ways I wish she didn't because they are expensive and we can't afford them but we're only going to use ME covers from now on because they last longer even if they cost more so you need less of them. Normally I use regular prefolds with a snappi... Nick is so squirmy I'm teriffied of pins. At night time we double stuff fuzzibunz and it works well for us. We haven't had a leak in months but he doesn't sleep through the night yet so he's never in one diaper more than 3 or 4 hours at night time anyways.

Carla
December 18th, 2003, 09:04 AM
Ashley, ebay, http:www.amitymama.com (the main market board, you can sometimes find some good cheap dipes) and http://orangestarfish.com/ are the only places I can think of for cheap diapers.

Oh I forgot to add Ashley ebay is a great place to get cheap used (or new at times) diapers... thats where we got the majority of our starting supply.

Why I Cloth Diaper: to save money, for health reason, and environmental reasons

Diapers of Choice: Monkey Bottoms, Fuzzi Buns

Children: Isaiah 6 1/2 months

Why I Cloth Diaper: Started out to save $$$ and like many others now its more of an addiction.

Our History: We started cloth diapering full time at home when Isaiah was 6 weeks old. Till 6 weeks he was in a hip harrness and diaper changes were a PITA and the cloth diapers were to bulky and pinched him with the angle his hip had to be at. I just find it hard to belive that I started out buying gerber prefolds and dappi covers but then never even used them!

Diapers of Choice: Fuzzi Bunz, Doodle Bottoms, Wonderoos. Going to try out some AIO's.

Why I Cloth Diaper: Mainly financial...after starting CD'ing I can't imagine going backt o spending $20/weeks on diapers
Our History: I tried it briefly when Jacob was about 8 months old and hated it...started again about 3 months ago with a totally different diaper and am LOVING it!
Diapers of Choice: Only pocket dipes...I'd love to try more...I just don't know where to go from here!

Ashley
December 19th, 2003, 03:43 PM
Robyn... I have only used pocket dipes too. (for the last couple weeks infact)

Today I used a prefold and wrapped it around an insert... Then layed it flat in a cover. It worked great, and not that much harder then a pocket diaper!

Any recommendations on liners??

Ashley
December 22nd, 2003, 06:31 PM
Brandi told me to use Micro Fiber cleaning towels from the automotive dept at walmart. They work like a charm!

All I did (to make it easier on me) was tri-fold them, then sew them shut so I didn't have to fold them every single time. :lol

I believe it's like $4 something for a pack of 5!! (cheap!!!!!)

Brandi Jo

Why I Cloth Diaper: It saves money and I love the reaction
Our History: We cloth diapered from the time she was 2 days old. It was originally dh's idea. I did research and I love it. It's what what works for us.

Children: Emma 11-16-02, and Jacob EDD 2-16-04
Why I Cloth Diaper: To save money and I wanted to be different.
Our History: We cloth diapered my DD from when she was a couple weeks old on with prefolds and covers. At around 2 months, I switched to basically only Fuzzi bunz and that's what we've been using since. I'd like to try out some other pocket diapers. When my dd was 9 months old, I took a break from cloth diapering while we moved and got lazy about getting back into it. But when she got a diaper rash from DDipes, DH wanted me to start using them again-as long as he doesn't have to wash them.

Children: Alexander (7/3/97) Matthew Ryan (10/02/02)

Why I Cloth Diaper: Matthew had allergic reaction to dd. So we tried cloth diapering again (tried it with Alex with those cheap Gerber prefolds) and we love it. I also like the financial and enviromental reasons as well as the healthy benefits for my son. Wish I would have tried harder to CD Alex.

Our History: started with a couple of used Fuzzi Bunz and testing diapers for Doodlebottoms. We've tried many different brands and found that we like Fancy Pants and Doodlebottoms the best. Our favorite fitteds are cloth baby. Covers are Bummis SWW.

Diapers of Choice: Pockets Fancy Pants and Doodlebottoms then Fuzzi Bunz

Everyone be sad with me. My Cloth Diapers are on a slow boat to TN. I have a few CD left here and we'll be using some disposables. Gasp! I just didn't have the room to pack them in the suitcase and we already have to be careful about weight since luggage can only weigh 50 lbs now. I am sad but at least they'll be at my dad's so I can use them instead of disposables while we stay with him for 6 months (dh is going to school and then on to our next duty station to find us a new home).

Ashley
December 29th, 2003, 07:31 PM
I am still partially using disposables. When I am washing diapers... and we just went on an overnight trip and I used them then too.

Mandy
December 30th, 2003, 09:43 AM
I still use DD at night and on trips.

Where can I buy fancy pants and doodlebottoms pocket diapers? Will the fuzzi bunz inserts fit in them?

carmeyp
December 30th, 2003, 06:50 PM
We only use disposables when someone else is watching Matthew (only one of my friends will change a cloth diaper) and when we go on long trips which hmmm has only happened twice in the past 3 years. When you live on an island you can't go very far from home.

Mandy you can see them at
www.doodlebottoms.com (http://www.doodlebottoms.com) and www.fancypants-diapers.com (http://www.fancypants-diapers.com) and I have use a FB insert in them and it fit just fine.

HTH!

It looks like both sites have sold out of most everything! I guess I hit it at the wrong time of year.

I do have a few questions...

Does anyone have a preferred type of pocket diaper for use with a boy?

For those who have tried fancy pants pocket diapers and like them:

Do you like the fleece or pul on the outside? What insert do you prefer to use with it?

For those who have tried the doodle bottoms pocket diapers and like them:

What insert do you prefer with these?

TIA

Also, has anyone asked if we can have a seperate forum for cloth diapering?

Child: Josiah (6 months old)

Why I use Cloth: I didn't want the chemicals in disposables anywhere near Josiah's skin. Its cheaper and its better for the environment.

Our History: I researched a lot on diapering during pregnancy. We decided cloth was the best way to go. We were in disposables until his cord fell off because everything went over the cord and started using cloth after that.

Diapers of Choice: My favorites are Fuzzi Bunz. Actually, that's all I've tried. I tried to stuff them at night with one JB and a CPF, but that was too bulky and leaked. I use 2 FBs now and he'll go a good 12 hours without leaking.

Brandi Jo

Mandy: I have two used Fancypants pockets for sale if you are interested in trying them. Just thought I'd let you know. Now, to answer your questions:

I use both FP's and Doodlebottoms. I prefer the PUL on the outside. For my Fancypants, I either stuff with a MOE insert, a JB, or a CPF. Usually a CPF. For the Doodlebottoms, I tend to use either microfibre towels or the inserts that Cory has for sale on her site. I think that the doodlebottoms are a little thinner through the crotch area, and a CPF makes them super bulky!

Children: Jacob, who is 2 (9.10.01) and is potty training and only wears 2 or 3 diapers a day now :(

Why I Cloth Diaper: It's better for baby, it's better for the environment, and I like to be different. ;) I love all the cute prints, and I love hearing and seeing people's reactions.

Our History: We started using cloth when Jacob was about 2 months old. The first cd we ever used was a Bumkins AIO. I had decided that I would use cloth but ONLY AIOs because they looked easy. Then I discovered MDC and the diapering board at ParentsPlace and started learning about all the other cute WAHM diapers, and I was hooked... For awhile most of my stash consisted of Luke's Drawers AIOs, but then I started branching out to other WAHM AIOs and fitteds. That's when I learned how much I loved wool covers. After almost giving up using cloth at night because of leaks, I discovered Cloud 9 Hemp Softies (fitteds) and an aristocrat and never used anything else at night - for 2 years that has been our night time system, and it has never failed us. :D Once we made the switch to cloth, we never used disposables again - not even on vacation! I am very sad that Jacob is potty training, and I have no reason to buy any more diapers. I guess now I will try to find some cute cloth training pants...

Diapers of Choice: It seems like, over the past two years, I have tried every diaper out there, and my "favorites" change often. I have really liked my Cloud 9 Softies (sadly, Lisa just shut her business down), Lukes Drawers Candy Wrappers, Baby SoftWraps AIOs, Righteous BAby Wool-In-Ones, Bizzy B Hive AIOs, and Mudpie Babies AIOs. And of course I love my Fuzzi Bunz. :)

I'm not pregnant, nor do I have any children.

But the idea of cloth diapering intrigues me since I don't know ANYONE IRL who has done it (including my own mother).

Anyway, please explain what the different components of cloth diapers. I'm reading here about pre-folds, inserts and covers but I don't know what these things mean.

What brands are good? How expensive do cloth diapers run? How much of a real savings is cloth diapering vs. disposables?

Any other insights would be appreciated.

Ashley

I *just* started cloth diapering not to long ago. (and my son is one) Right now we mostly use Fuzzi Bunz. (pocket diapers, that means that they have a pocket in them that you stuff with an insert. Inserts are just different types of things used to catch and hold all the urine) They can run up to $15.95 (for color) each. Seems pretty pricey at first, but if you do the special calculator (not sure where one is at the moment) you can save like $600/year using those types of diapers. (that was based on what I put in for the fuzzi bunz) They are soooo easy!

I have used prefolds (regular old cloth diapers, those white things) with a cover. (just what it says it covers the prefold or whatever you have on. I just don't like it near as well. He always seems to get the cover filthy on the first wear anyway...

Name: Anne
Children: Katie, born May 8, 2002
Why I Cloth Diaper: Cuteness and cost.
Our History: I had a false start with CDing when Katie was about 9 months old, and then started again this past fall.
Diapers of Choice: This changes almost daily, but I really love my Bizzy B Hive AIOs and my Fuzbaby fitteds. However, I'm going to start working on potty training (for real, this time!) with Katie now, so I'm slowly transitioning to things she can pull up and down - training pants and pull on covers, that sort of thing. In fact, I'm going to be selling off a LOT of my stash here soon, so if you're interested, pm me and I'll tell you what I've got!

Okay grumble grumble... Nick is starting to outgrow his smalls for fuzzibunz. I don't want to order new ones. But DH and our sitter greatly prefer them so we're going to get 12.

I have about 12 mediums that are slightly used that I'll sell you if you are interested. They are all white and have the pointed tabs (I think...I'll have to double check when I get home). They were only used part time, in rotation, for about 4 months on my daughter. I'll also send you a PM. :)

Oh, no, Jennie... they weren't the ones I recommended, were they? I hope not!

I'm going to put up a post in the buy/sell/trade forum, but I'm going to be selling my two SP wool covers, my SP snap-ins, my turkey Cuddlewrap, my Bumkins cover, my Fuzbaby watermelon set, and all of my AIOs. I'm just keeping my fitteds and my pull-on covers. And I hope to be getting rid of the fitteds fairly soon, too, and replacing them all with pull-on diapers and trainers. :crossfing: So, if you need some larges, pm me!
