View Full Version : How do you like your lights?

Bright and garish? Bold and beautiful? Uniform in color? Purposeful?
Although I love all one color for Christmas lights, I have to admit, it just isn't Christmas without seeing some bright, garish, mishmash house that is way over the top. I saw one tonight that if I weren't in traffic, I could of just stopped and stared at. Every color of the rainbow, santas, nativities, huge candy canes, lights everywhere.
Tell me what kind of Christmas lights get you in the Christmas mood? :santa2:

I like simplicity. I'm not fond of colored lights and tons of adornment. Simple things tend to catch my eye more. :)

I am a fan of the classic white lights. Very simple.
Carla --there is a house by my parents and they are waaaaaaay over the top. They even have a sign out front saying "The Griswolds"

:lol2: I'm watching that right now. This wasn't that bad, but close.
I want to put up lights but I want one color and Mark wants mulit-color. For us, it's easier just not to bother. I did win out on just white lights on the tree though :)

We have those white icicle lights. We just put them up last night. We weren't planning on it, but Madelynn LOVES them.
In NM they have these things called luminarias, basically a candle in a small brown paper bag, they are so cool looking. I like them.
I do like the houses with tons of lights though.

My husband beat me out on the colored lights for the tree... I prefer classic white. We have white candles in each of the front windows though. :) We compromise.

I like multi colored lights. We use the big bulbs on the putside of the house and the little one for the tree and inside.

I like white lights, but DH is a paranoid freak about lights outside (don't ask, you'd make fun of me for marrying a lunatic  ) so we just did colored lights on our one little tree out front.
We do colored lights on the Christmas tree, too.

White lights, but Paul prefers multicolored (guess who wins?!)
The people across the street have BRIGHT blue on the bushes. Ugh

We have white icicle lights, and white lights on the bushes. Inside, we have multi colored lights on the tree. It's a compromise; I want all white, he wants all color! :)

Hmmm, it seems to be a pattern. I wonder why men seem to prefer colored while most women prefer white? Interesting.
Oh, and it definitely isn't good light-seeing trip if we don't at least one garishishly decorated house!

I really like the white icicle lights, but saw a huge 2 story house with the multicolored icicles, different, and I really liked it.
As for windows, I have clear window icicles, multi strands to circle some other windows, and window light sculptures [candy cane and santa].
For our trees [we have a 7 1/2 ft. and a 3ft] I have both multi and white.
Overall rule, no blinking!!!! Drives me up a freaking wall!

I grew up with colored lights on our tree and outside. I didn't even know that people used white lights for Christmas -- I thought they were reserved for restaurants. We have a pre-lit Christmas tree with white lights, and I use white lights outside, but I also like to mix colored lights in for variety.

Hmm, I don't have anything against colored lights. We have some multi-colored lights along the edge of the roof, and then some icicle lights on the front porch. The tree (when we get it put up) will have multi-colored lights.
We have a neighbor around the corner that is way over the top with decorations. They have lights hanging from their trees in the front yard, it's obscene. I'm so glad I don't live right across the street or next door.

I like all white, no blinking!
Every 3rd house in our neighborhood goes over the top. Even the ones that choose "simple" themes manage to overdo. There's a house on the corner that looks like a pine forest. I can't even remember what color the house is under all that greenery. Then, of course, there are the 8' tall blow up dolls. We have a santa, a snowman, and the Burl Ives snowman from Rudolph - all 8' tall and all on our block. We're practically the only house that hasn't decorated yet. Our house looks nude.

I prefer all white lights. Simple just seems to look dressier to me. Stagg prefers multi-colored.
This year, I think we will have both white & colored on the tree (if we ever get it decorated!). Outside, we have some white lights, and a white swag with a blue star across the gable over our front door.
I have a feeling that as the kids get older, the decorating scheme will get brighter & more obnoxious... I see lighted reindeer and blowup snowmen in our future.

For my own home, I like very simple white lights with no blinking and such. We use white candles in our windows and our tree (with white lights) sits in our living room in front of the picture window. We have a white light tree in the yard and some red bows on the shutters and of course, a Christmas wreath.
I love looking at the over-the-top homes though! I think they're really neat looking!

 Don't ya just love these! I saw one the other day, and I swear the thing was just a few feet short of being as tall as the 2 story house it was in front of. I've never seen one that big! It had to be tied to the lawn with 4 ropes!

 OMG! It turns out the people who live across the street from us go pretty nuts with their lights. I'll have to try and get a picture. They have a reindeer on the roof and Pooh in the yard.

I've always had colored lights but living in New Orleans and driving down St. Charles St. past all the big fancy mansions, the white lights looks so beautiful!

We have colored lights on the tree - no blinking (I hate that!) And if it stops raining and snowing and being freezing cold for Christmas, we'll eventually get white lights on outside. Just some around the door frame and a few on some of the bushes. Nothing too fancy. Nobody in our neighborhood is AWFUL, but we do have people that have gone more "all out" than others.
Saturday night, I took my goddaughter home and we passed by this house that had lights EVERYWHERE and at least three of those blow-up decorations (nutcracker, Santa, and a snowman if I remember correctly). And this was on a MOBILE HOME!!!!

I LOVE looking at outrageous light displays. My dream would be a FGriswold Christmas display. But we keep ours pretty tasteful (although we haven't put any up yet this year!).

I prefer white lights all around....I tried doing a tree and decorations with multi-color one year, and it just didn't look right to me..I like things simple and classic, and I just wasn't getting the look I wanted with the colored lights

I let DH choose for the tree and he picked multi-coloured, which is fine with me.
Outside, we have alternating white and green. I like it because there's a bit of colour, but it still has a nice clean look  Our neighbours across the street have alternating red and white, which looks amazing. I also like red-green-white-red-green-white
I really don't mind multi-coloured outside, but I think that each house should be consistent. I don't like white on the house, multi-coloured on the bushes, and solid green somewhere else. Just pick something and go with it!

Simplicity.....I never use colored lights on my tree or my house....only mini whites. And my tree is never a mish mash...its always a theme tree, usually in victorian style with lots of beads, angles and bows in colors like mauve or some light green....although, last year we had a native american themed tree that we really loved and this year the tree is still in victorian style but its in red and gold. :tree:

I grew up with a multi-colored tree, but I love white lights now!
Our tree is white with sage and light light pink with lots of silver and crystal pieces.....
The outside is all white with 3 animated reindeer, a white wire 6' tree and lots of bushes and trees decorated! So pretty, if I do say so myself! But I do love looking at multi - colored lights on other people's houses

Mulit-colored lights both on the tree and outside. Also on the tree I like some twinkling lights not blinking (there is a slight difference :) )
As for blinking lights outside, It annoys me when half of the house blinks and the other of the half is steady. If they are going to blink then they all should blink

I have groen up with multi colors and no theme just a anything goes as far as an ornament s oyou can say it is just a try full of ornements that we find and we like. Every year my mom would let us pick out ornament and put on the tree and she still does this. I think I am going to let my childern do the same I think it is wonderful to see what they pick out and the taste they get bye beinging able to choose.

For my outside lights I usually do white with red and green. I love white lights but I need to have a bit of colour in there as well. On my tree I had white lights this year, but i try to change between white and multi colour lights each year.

I love the multi colored lights, DH thinks the single colored lights are good for decorating outside.
