A friend of ours has this problem and wanted me to come on here and post to see what others have dealt with/learned.
Their child is about 9 months old. The mother has seen a few instances where her Daughter's eyes cross. No one else has seen it. She took her child to the doctor and her ped told her that the childs soft spot is hardening too quickly and that is what is causing it. His recommendation is to do surgery to the front of her forehead and force the lobes apart!!! WHAT???? Has anyone heard of such a crazy thing?
Of course, I immediately said they need a second/third/forth opininon about something like this. But, she wanted me to get on my "baby website" and see what others had to say about why a child could be cross eyed, and whether anyone had heard of such a drastic measure to correct it.
TIA!

I've never heard of that!!! If noticed my baby's eyes were crossing (as we thought Norah's were), I would take them to a pediatric opthamologist (as we did) to see if there were any eye problems!! HELLO!

Well, my friend had been noticing her son was getting very cross-eyed. She brought him to a pediatric opthamologist and turns out he is VERY farsighted! Poor thing couldn't see anything up close at all.
He is now in glasses full time.... he's 2 years old.

I used to babysit a 10 month old who had severly crossed eyes, but they were crossed constantly and not just when he focused on something. Even then, they only did surgery on his eye muscles and then he wore glasses. I'd tell her to get a second opinion.

Definitely get a second opinion! Yikes!
It doesn't even sound like it's a major problem if she's the only one who's seen it so far.

I agree, take the baby to a pediatric opthamologist.
It can be scary. My eyes used to roll right back into my head when my Mom or Dad would be feeding me so all you could see was the whites of my eyes. I apparently had my first eye exam at 6 months old. I didn't get my glasses until I was 5 but I did have to have eyedrops regulalry for a long time before that. I just have really bad astigmatism.

Kincaid was cross eyed (not constantly, but often enough) till 8 months old and the ped said we'd just watch him and if at a year he still was we'd set up an appointment with an ophthamologist...

I have actually heard of this. My niece was about that age when she had to have her skull xray because it looked like it was fusing too fast. Thankfully she was ok.
I would check out all options and opinions.

Coming back to report and ask another question:
They did take this little girl to the ped. opthomologist. She has been diagnosed w/ craniosynosiosis. Anyone heard of/dealt w/ this? I guess it is the technical term for the bones fusing to quickly. I am going to do some research on it for her, but I was wondering if anyone had heard of this before?

Riley was almost diagnosed with this. Her soft spot closed too soon, and it didn't allow her skull to grow quick enough. Thankfully, her head did continue to grow slowly. Sometimes if the bones fuse too tight too quick, then it doesn't allow for the brain to grow and starts restricting development. Surgery was going to be an option for us, but we did luck out because she kept developing.

Sorry, I misspelt it, it is craniosynostosis.
I have found a lot of information online. Scary, but actually not as uncommon as I thought.
