View Full Version : Who does the bills?
Dawn February 21st, 2005, 09:57 AM Besides the fact that it's been quiet in here ( ) , I wanted to know who does the bills? Since us SAHMs most likely take care of most of the housework and other things around the house, do you do the bills as well or is that DH's responsibility? if you do the bills yourself, do you pay them thru online banking or write a check?
I take care of the bills, and I honestly don't mind. I write out checks (there's something about doing it online that doesn't appleal to me...maybe it's because I'm so use to doing it the other way). I couldn't see me NOT doing the bills. If James were to ever say that he wanted to start doing it, I would probably tell him no.
LISA February 21st, 2005, 10:30 AM Dh takes care of the bills..I much prefer to be in the dark http://66.179.206.112/forums/images/smilies/blush.gif and a fine example of why he does it, came last night when I finally opened up an email from the phone company.. I kept forgetting to open the bill and it was past due for 2 mths and $120! http://66.179.206.112/forums/images/smilies/duh.gifhttp://66.179.206.112/forums/images/smilies/blush.gif so I'm going to sign back up for paper bills http://66.179.206.112/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif
LisaBelle February 21st, 2005, 10:31 AM I do our bills.. all online. I am so thrilled not having to write out checks and deal with envelopes and stamps
I do our bills with Microsoft Money. The moment the bill comes, I open it and enter it in Money to be sent a few days before the bill is due.
Cortney February 21st, 2005, 12:57 PM I do our bills- always have. I've tried online banking, but I much prefer a paper bill with a check! :)
TtownAnne February 21st, 2005, 01:12 PM DH does them all - he's an accountant and, well, why mess with someone who knows what they're doing? Just about everything is done online, except for our electricity and life insurance. :)
Karri February 21st, 2005, 02:50 PM I used to do the bills, but Chris took it over. It got to be stressful for me to find the time to sit down and do it (not that he has time  ) , and he was never believeing me when I was telling him that he needed to curb his unnecessary spending habits because we were broke. So he took over and well, I gotta say, ignorance can be bliss  When he complains about all the money being gone, I just tell him I dont want to hear about it
Anyway....
we pay ALL of our bills electronically...every single one of them (except for Aidan's tuition, which is paid once a semester). He typically sits down and pays bills on the weekend after he gets paid for all the bills due before his next paycheck.
For us, it only makes sense to pay them electronically. Our bank doesnt charge us to do it, so it takes us forever to go through a box of checks, so we don't have that expense or the expense of stamps :aok:
Colleen February 21st, 2005, 02:52 PM I do our bills. DH used to do them...but he had a certain way of taking every bill due that month, writing out checks for every one (say, paying the gas bill on the 3rd when it was due the 25th and could have waited til next payday) and then we had like $25 for the next 2 weeks left in checking. :colfish:
Now, I do the bills. The CC's get paid online, and most of the utlities and stuff I write checks for. DH pays the mortgage at the bank with the first paycheck of the month. That's his pnly bill related job, except for depositing his paycheck.
Mandi February 21st, 2005, 04:00 PM I get all that responsibility.. and stress.
Carla February 21st, 2005, 05:26 PM I let Mark take care of it most of the time. We do it all online anyway, so it's not a big deal. I do take care of the car things though.
Tara February 21st, 2005, 05:28 PM I do it all too. I do about half and half online and the old way. I like to wait until the last minute and pay online but I also would rather sit down and write out a check.
harmonielyn February 21st, 2005, 06:26 PM I do all of our bills. I pay some online, credit cards and loans. I pay our 'mall bills' in person because it gives me a chance to get out and walk a bit. I dont trust DH one bit to pay bills. Right now we're currently building his credit he screwed up when he was in charge of money. He made way more money before than he does now yet he was behind then but now now, and we're paying past bills.
Theresa February 21st, 2005, 06:48 PM DH does all of ours with paper checks. I was doing them, but I almost had a nervous breakdown. I would get so stressed about it.
Michele February 21st, 2005, 07:02 PM We both do them. When they come in I open them and always put them in the same spot, then whoever has some extra time takes them out and pays them. I usually do them more often than he does though.
We have some bills we pay the old fashioned way, and some on-line, I need to set up our bank account to do them all on-line, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
gulp! February 21st, 2005, 09:06 PM I do them. 99% of them are online. That way I can do them at work or at home, wherever I have time.
Karly February 21st, 2005, 10:33 PM I do them all of the time. I only pay two things online and the rest we send out in checks, however we just opened a new account with the bank I started working for, and they have online bill pay. So, I think I'll start sending out less checks and save money on stamps now, buy doing the rest online now.
I think Josh would be perfectly capable doing the bills, but I enjoy it, so I do it. :)
Hilary February 22nd, 2005, 12:59 PM I do them all. I do almost all of them online, except for the daycare.
Shel February 22nd, 2005, 01:17 PM David refuses to touch them because "you are the accountant in the family". Sucked going to work all day paying bills for business who had no money, then coming home and paying our bills with no money :)
I do everything online or by phone except for karate and water/sewer.
AahRee February 22nd, 2005, 01:45 PM Phil is supposed to do them, but we usually wind up doing them together. He still doesn't totally *get* how the online billpay thing works, so I usually wind up doing that part for us. But he really likes to know exactly how much is in our account, to the penny, so he balances our checkbook and all that several times a week. I wouldn't mind taking it over entirely, but then he'd nag me all the time about how much was in our account, and if I couldn't spout off the exact number, he'd get frustrated... so it's just easier to do it this way. :)
Kara February 22nd, 2005, 03:08 PM I do it..and I like too..
I do some online and some paper..Mostly CC's on line, phone is online. I mail the others..
Chantal February 23rd, 2005, 10:43 AM I pay all the utility bills... Dh pays the taxes, mortgage and insurance - but they are paid via direct withdrawl - so its not like he can default on those payments. I take care of everything that comes to us by mail in the form of invoices or bills. It works just fine that way.
I pay everything via online banking... Cheques are very rarely used - only if I order some books and they dont have an online account for payment. But that too, rarely happens.
AllyRae February 23rd, 2005, 11:44 AM DH does the household bills and I do the business bills... It got too confusing when we both tried to do the household bills because we wouldn't know who did what....
Amy March 1st, 2005, 09:25 PM I used to do our bills, from before we were married until last summer, and DH was completely in the dark. However, I never curbed my spending habits once I became a SAHM, and was still spending like we had two salaries. He's done all of them since August, and we are soooo much better off. Can I shop like I used to? No, but we're also way ahead on our bills with money still in the bank, and I much prefer it that way. I know I can open any bill at any time, and I can always look in our checkbook to see what the balance is, but he writes the checks.
He still does everything the old fashioned way, paper check and bill, just to have that trail. I liked doing it online, and he said he plans to do that by the end of this year.
dbradley March 2nd, 2005, 09:21 PM I do it all through online banking. If it were up to DH we'd go bankrupt from late fees!
~Deborah~ March 3rd, 2005, 11:51 AM I pay all the bills through internet banking as soon as it arrives in the mail. If I let DH pay them then we would be sitting in the dark with a collection agency banging on our door:rolleyes:.
