View Full Version : Talking toddlers: "glue" words?
Alyssa January 20th, 2004, 02:09 PM For those whose toddlers are talking, how are they doing using "glue" words like "is" "or" "to" "with" "a" "the" etc.
Aidan uses them just sometimes and in some places, like "We get it at store, Mommy?" (currently a big phrase  ) I always repeat everything back to him, "Yes, Aidan, we'll get it at the store" so I am assuming that between the repeating, reading, and general listening he'll just pick this up as his language skills mature.
Anything else I can/should do?
Nocona January 20th, 2004, 02:14 PM Hey! :)
Sometimes Matthew puts articles/adverbs in and sometimes he doesn't. He was big on saying "a" whatever for a while, but doesn't as much now. I do exactly what you're doing... repeat it back properly. I think they'll pick it all up eventually. I guess they see those as unnecessary words
TtownAnne January 20th, 2004, 03:41 PM We've got some of them, but use is inconsistent *at best*. "We go to store, Mommy?", etc. But like everyone else, I just repeat it back the right way.
Jillian January 20th, 2004, 03:48 PM Janelle uses very few right now...her two most common sentences "daddy no work" and "Oh wow, look at that" (which she says while pointing at such exciting things as the wall clock, that has been there her whole life.). I just figure it is something she will pick up later.
TtownAnne January 20th, 2004, 04:13 PM :rotflmao: We get "Hey, look at clock!" (for the clock that has been on her wall since we moved in)
"Oh wow, look at that" (which she says while pointing at such exciting things as the wall clock, that has been there her whole life.).
Jillian January 20th, 2004, 06:28 PM Hmm maybe they know something that we don't?
Lette January 23rd, 2004, 08:11 AM Lexie uses them in the wrong spot.. ie "Where Daddy Is?"
But does say "What's dis doing here?" So maybe she's getting it 1/2 the time!
AahRee January 28th, 2004, 07:10 PM :rotflmao: We get "Hey, look at clock!" (for the clock that has been on her wall since we moved in)
Katie JUST learned *clock* today, but she doesn't quite pronounce it correctly. So, if she were to say that phrase, it would be more like, "Hey, look at cock" :rotflmao:
AahRee January 28th, 2004, 07:13 PM Oh, and to answer the question, Katie isn't really using *glue* words yet. It's more like *Go Gaga (grandma) House!* and *Read book* and things like that. I try to repeat it back to her correctly, but sometimes I admit that I baby talk to her without thinking about it.
Dennis January 28th, 2004, 10:12 PM Joe's real big with "too" right now. He tacks that on the end of everything.

TtownAnne January 28th, 2004, 10:44 PM OMG, Anne, you have no idea how happy my MIL will be to hear that some other kid says "Gaga" for Grandma - she swears it's some personal invention of Caroline's!
It's more like *Go Gaga (grandma) House!*
AahRee February 2nd, 2004, 06:53 PM  Anne ~ I think my MIL thinks the same thing!
