JUst wondering if anyone suffered from post partum thyroiditis after having your baby. I had it pretty bad for 9 months after having Andrew (almost 3). I know I have a very big likelyhood of getting it again after this baby is born. I was wondering if any of you did have it did you go to the endocrinologist during your 2nd pregnancy or did you wait till after you delivered?

I know they tested my thyroid with my last blood test and it looked fine right now. I guess I am nervous and want to prevent any of the bad side effects (achiness, depression, fatigue) that I had after #1.

Hope someone can help!

I had thyroid problems after my first baby and the Dr. has just kept me on synthroid ever since. I did have tests pretty frequently during the second pregnancy because, per the Dr, if your levels are off in can increase the risk of a preemie.

Thanks for the info Mary. I know my levels went back to normal so that is why I never had to stay on anything but I never thought about the premie factor. I think I will call my endocrinologist and ask him what he thinks.

THanks!

I was diagnosed with thyroiditis and consequently, hypothyroidism about 4 months post partum with my son. When I found out I was pregnant with the twins, they watched me VERY carefully and checked my levels frequently. I am still on synthroid and will be from now on. My girls were small but not preemie (36w1d, they didn't consider them "preemie" ) and I had to be very careful to remember to take my pills b/c it can cause your child to have developmental issues as well.

thanks for the info. I never had to take synthroid. I took a beta blocker for a few months after having #1. I know the ob watched my blood but I go back there next Monday and I will double check with him on when I should see the endo.
