View Full Version : Cate/Catie for Catherine
Alyssa January 18th, 2005, 12:39 PM What do you think of Cate or Catie as a nickname for Catherine?? I’ve certainly seen it, but I’m curious if people still think it looks too funky given the norm of Kate or Katie.
NOTE: I am not asking for opinions on nicknames in general or nicknames for Catherine!! :tongue2:
Hilary January 18th, 2005, 12:43 PM Madelynn has a friend named Kathryn and everyone calls her Katie. I think it's nice.
magoo January 18th, 2005, 12:45 PM I prefer Cate/Kate with a K but I think it's okay with a C too. I just love the name in general. She'd likely spend a lot of time correcting people... then again, Catherine is just one of those names with a ton of spellings so she'll likely be used to correcting people.
Isn't Cate Blanchette with a C?
Wendy January 18th, 2005, 12:52 PM LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Roger and I have actually talked about this name. I dont want to go with Kathryn for two reasons. 1. Because of Sheila's Katie and 2. Since there are bound to be a few more Katie's in her class at least she would be a little different. Still trying to convince Roger that Catie is a beautiful. He loves Katie, but not thrilled with spelling it with a C. I told him that if I couldnt have it with a C then I didnt want it at all.
Karri January 18th, 2005, 12:56 PM While I REALLY LOVE Cate (there is just something that looks so feminine and beautiful and classic about it), I am not at all fond of Catie, and I am not sure why.
harmonielyn January 18th, 2005, 12:58 PM Did you watch Montell today? Theres a lady on there named Cate. I like Kate and Katie as a nickname but spelled with a C those names would throw me off. I babysit a little girl named Katherine and her mom plans to call her Kat.
sheila January 18th, 2005, 12:59 PM While I REALLY LOVE Cate (there is just something that looks so feminine and beautiful and classic about it), I am not at all fond of Catie, and I am not sure why.
 Me too.
Brooke January 18th, 2005, 01:07 PM I love the C.
Alyssa January 18th, 2005, 01:30 PM I hear you on Cate being better than Catie, and I agree. I don't know if I can completely avoid Catie though. :)
Nocona January 18th, 2005, 02:36 PM Matthew's best friend's parents just did this. It confused the heck out of me at first. I think it's ok now. I do prefer Cate, but I'm sure that will come when she gets older.
Brooke January 18th, 2005, 02:38 PM We're totally avoiding "Becky" for Rebekah and we've been successful so far.
Theresa January 18th, 2005, 02:52 PM I like Kate and Katie for Catherine, but I don't care for them spelled with a C. It looks to much like "cat" to me. Meow!
Alyssa January 18th, 2005, 02:54 PM We're totally avoiding "Becky" for Rebekah and we've been successful so far.I am sure I COULD avoid Catie if we insisted. I just don't think I'd want to. I know I didn't make that clear. :)
~Andrea~ January 18th, 2005, 02:55 PM You can avoid nicknames by correcting people who call her Catie. I like the spelling Catherine best for the name. Cate however seems odd. I'm betting it would grow on me though ;)

Good to know. Eric has Rebecca on his name list, but I *really* don't like Becky.
Alysia January 18th, 2005, 03:14 PM I like Cate the best!!
As far as avoiding nicknames.. we have had no luck! We ALWAYS call Genavieve by her full name but my ILs have insisted on calling her Gena (which I probably wouldnt mind so much if they added the extra "N" so people would say it right!! People see that and try to call her GINA. )
Alyssa January 18th, 2005, 04:20 PM I don't want to avoid a nickname - I'd want her to be Cate. And, for a few years, Catie.
Brooke January 18th, 2005, 04:41 PM If you want Cate/Catie with a C, then that's what she'll be.
I think both look fine and I think they make sense when Catherine is spelled with a C. Personally, I think that a NN should be spelled close to the full name (Rebekah = Bekah, not Becca). So that means that Catherine should be Cate, Catie, or Cathy, not Kate, Katie or Kathy. Does that make sense?
Karri January 18th, 2005, 04:41 PM I dont know if you can turn a Catie into a Cate, though. My SIL is Kathryn. She was Katie and wanted to be a Kate. NO ONE will call her Kate except her coworkers. Though once her friend-coworkers started mingleling with her husband (my brother) who calls her Katie, they started calling her Katie now & again too. Its a vicious cycle.
AahRee January 18th, 2005, 07:10 PM I love it. But I'm biased - I like Katie, no matter how it's spelled!
Kathryn January 18th, 2005, 07:30 PM a girl i went to college with was Cate... :aok: I like it!!
While I REALLY LOVE Cate (there is just something that looks so feminine and beautiful and classic about it), I am not at all fond of Catie, and I am not sure why.
Kathryn January 18th, 2005, 07:35 PM Karri I am quoting you all over the place
I was always Katie growing up... until my senior year in high school and I made the switch to Kate... and then in the workplace I am Kathryn... It is actually very funny when I see someone I grew up with b/c it is always Katie but then everyone aelse after it is Kate... Jason calls me Kate... however to my nieces and nephews I am aunt katie...

Bev January 18th, 2005, 09:33 PM I like it; it makes a popular name look a bit different without being too "kreaytiv." The C doesn't bother me at all; it helps with my aversion to the letter K.
My DH has the same problem, everyone calls him Pat whether he wants them to or not. Except me and my family, we all call him Patrick. I asked him when I first met him what he prefers and he said Patrick. It really freaks me out to hear other people call him Pat. I'm all, "Who?" And, oddly enough he always calls me Beverly when virtually everyone else in the world calls me Bev. I really have no preference though I will always introduce myself as Beverly to avoid the Beth thing. Sort of like Alysia's Gena/Gina thing. :)
sheila January 18th, 2005, 10:09 PM NNs can grow as people do. My brothers called me Shookie/Shook almost exclusively until I was in high school. Then it stopped, pretty much overnight. Every once in a while, they'll bring it back out, but they have to really want something.
I think it has more to do with the person than it does with the name.
gulp! January 18th, 2005, 10:40 PM I love it spelled with a C. Krishan was going to be Cate/Kate if he was a girl, and we waffled back and forth on how to spell it. Eventually we went with K, but only because we wanted to incorporate my late FIL's initials into the name.
Mandi January 18th, 2005, 11:24 PM I prefer the spelling with a K, but C isn't bad either. Of course she'll be forever correcting the spelling of her name. Since everyone spells my name with a Y I know how freakin annoying that can be.
Joan January 19th, 2005, 12:27 AM I like the "c". My neice is Caitie/Cait we switch between the two.
Shannon January 19th, 2005, 11:15 AM I love Catie!!!! I tend to think Katherine is overused, but with a C it just puts a different twist on it :) It is on my baby list :)
Clare January 29th, 2005, 02:48 AM I like it spelled with a C and agree with Brooke (I think) who said that the nn should start with the same initial as the full name
Catherine - Cate/Catie
Katherine - Kate/Katie
:)
Cazzle January 29th, 2005, 08:14 PM I like it! I don't like the letter K, I much prefer C  Cate for Catherine makes more sense to me than Kate. If Cate Blanchett can do it, so can you!
dbradley January 30th, 2005, 10:45 PM I prefer Cate/Kate with a K but I think it's okay with a C too. I just love the name in general. She'd likely spend a lot of time correcting people... then again, Catherine is just one of those names with a ton of spellings so she'll likely be used to correcting people.
Isn't Cate Blanchette with a C?Yep, me too. And yes, I *think* so!
Ana975 January 31st, 2005, 02:55 PM I prefer Cate with a "K", but I like Catie with a "C". I also prefer Catherine with a "C" than a "K".
