View Full Version : Metformin?
Kasie December 23rd, 2004, 12:34 AM Ladies,
Question for you all. If you've been on Met before how did you like it. Did it help you get pg? Also, were you using it in a combo of something else?
I have a script for met in my purse and my DR. thinks it would help me conceive, but I don't know. I mean I've been on Clomid, had IUI's, done the hcg injections. Could this Really help, I mean I do have PCOS and I know it's helped a lot of women. I have tried it before but quit because I didn't like the side effects, but I'm to the point now I don't care..I want a child!
If you could share your stories and experiences w/ me I would appreciate it.
TIA,
Kasie
Kimberly December 23rd, 2004, 07:21 AM Kasie,
I just recently stopped taking a combination pill - avadamet. It was a combo of metformin and rosilglitazone. Although I am not insulin resistant or have any blood sugar problems, my doctor thought that it might aid in the clomid working. With my DD, I used clomid and an hcg shot and that was no longer working for us, so I gave the avandamet a try. It didn't work for us either, but I don't regret giving it a shot. It was easy to try - just taking a pill everyday is much simpler than some of the things we go through. :awink: The only things I would warn you about are the incredible stomach issues! The first month or so that I was on it was crazy - I was going to the bathroom constantly. I'm not sure why it messes with your digestion/intestines so much, but it does. That was the only side effect that I dealt with though, so in my mind it was worth having given it a shot. I recently just had my ovaries drilled and my doctor is for sure now that I do not have PCOS, so I will not be going back on the avadamet when we start clomid again but I will try the hcg shot instead. I hope that helps some. If you have any other questions, you might want to pm Tricia. She's a good friend of mine and I know she has experience with just plain metformin. She lurks alot, but I don't know if she ever visits this forum.

Shanna2 December 23rd, 2004, 08:43 AM I took Metformin for about 6 months in 2003. I had the digestive side effects, but it could be controlled by cutting back on carbs and fat. I really think it helped me conceive. My cycles were about 90 days on average and when I got up to the optimum dose of Met, my cycles got much shorter and I conceived on my own. Prior to being on the Met, I had several failed Clomid/IUI cycles.
Good luck!
SarahK December 23rd, 2004, 09:59 AM Metformin intensifies the effects of Clomid. I was taking 2000mg of Glucophage XR (extended release) as well asClomid when I got PG on my second IUI.
I did have horrible gastrointestinal side-effects up until early pregnancy. I continued with the Gluc until I was 38 weeks PG--I had a very high risk of miscarriage without it.
Kasie December 26th, 2004, 12:08 AM Thank you all for your responses. I think that I'm going to give the Met a try for a while. My insurance doesn't cover the Clomid right now, so it's going to be just the met for now. Hopefully when DH gets on his new insurance plan we'll go back to the Clomid.
Thanks again,
Kasie
asta January 10th, 2005, 04:30 AM Hi, Kasie! I have pcos too, and I think even with the side effects you'd be doing yourself a big favor by trying the metformin. I was on clomid alone for two cycles (prescribed by my ob), and I ovulated both times, but did not conceive. I then took a month off from the clomid at my re's request to have a lot of testing done. After all the testing was complete, my re was about to put me on the metformin when I got a surprise bfp (I think I ovulated that month as a residual side effect of the two previous clomid cycles). He decided not to start me on the met because he didn't want to shock my system. I was VERY HAPPY to get the bfp, but I worried a lot during the whole first trimester because women with pcos have a 40% chance of having a miscarriage during that time, and research has shown that by taking the met during pregnancy women with pcos have a significantly reduced risk of having a miscarriage--it is roughly the same chance as any "normal" woman.
I have my first post-partum appointment after having my son in a couple of weeks, and I will be talking with my ob about starting the met. Dh and I want to wait a little while before trying for baby #2, so I'll be asking about going back on bcp's too, but I want to get my body used to the met for when we are ready to try to conceive again. HTH!!
Chantal February 23rd, 2005, 02:00 PM I have been on Met for 5 weeks now... currently up to my max dose of 1500mg.
I have had NO stomach upset or bowel issues... however, with that being said - I have been adamant about slowly working my way up to 1500mg... I took 500mg a day for 2 weeks, then increased it to 1000mg for one full week and then increased it to 1500mg.
Also, I am on weight watchers, so my fat, sugar and junkfood intake is next to nil (other than natural fats and sugar).
AND I am thrilled to say that the Met has totally KILLED my cravings... I am completely satisfied from a *normal* sized breakfast, lunch and supper...a nd dont NEED to eat between those meals. Also, if I do get the munchies, I am more willing to grab a fruit or some raw carrots - over heading for the bag of chips or chocolate bars! MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR diet change for me :)
Now I am waiting for my elliptical to help motivate my body to shed a few more pounds :) I am currently TAB from TTC #2 after 4 failed clomid cycles. My specialist also agrees that the Met will be beneficial to my ttc journey once I have finished dropping another 30lbs :)
Good luck to you!
