View Full Version : Failure to Thrive in a toddler.

I know it's common for newborns and babies to be diagnosed failure to thrive, but I was wondering if anyone else had a toddler who got the diagnosis? Did your ped run any tests? Did they figure anything out?

Janelle has had growth issues forever...IUGR when I was still pregnant with her, losing 17 ounces in the first 5 days of life, severe reflux...etc. She was diagnosed officially with ftt 3 times, once at 8 weeks old when she was still under 7lbs, but then we started zantac/reglan and she gained weight like a champ for awhile, and then again when she was 12lbs 6 ounces at 6 months, but then she started gaining on her own again, and now just recently at 15 months. At 12 months she was 16lbs 9ounces, at 15 months 16lbs 6ounces, and now at 16 months 16lbs 5ounces. So she is steadily losing an ounce a month.

We did all sorts of tests last week, urine, stool, a TON of blood work, re-did the PKU testing (though this time we tested for like 60+ diseases instead of the usual 8 that are tested for in Michigan), bone density testing, chest x-rays to make sure there was no underlying infection (the urine and some of the blood was for this to)...

So far the only thing that has been at all out of the ordinary is that they took 3 urines at very different times of the day and all of them had high ketone levels. Ketones just basically mean that your body is burning it's fat stores for energy, obviously something her body shouldn't be doing...in fact part of atkins is to put yourself into ketosis (high level of ketones) cause then you are using your fat stores instead of carbs for energy. Anyway, this could possibly be normal for her, but it could also signify some other things, so now we have to do a few more tests. We are going to test her kidney function, do a diabetes test (this is going to be a fasting blood sugar test), and check to see how fast she metabolizes things. These will all be done in the first couple weeks of february assuming I'm still doing ok (complete bed rest right now :banghead: ). We are at a loss here, a huge part of me wants everything to just be negative, but another part wants there to be something, anything really, that is causing this so we can treat it and move on. Not all of the original blood work is back yet...some of it takes over a month! :jawdrop: But so far, except for the ketones, everything else has been perfectly fine.

I hope Janelle is ok. But I know how you feel about just wishing SOMETHING was wrong. That way you can treat it and feel like you're doing something. If they say everything is normal but she's still losing weight, I think that would be the most frustrating.

I hope you can get some answers. Poor thing (you and her) to have to go through all those tests.

I hope they figure out what is going on- it does sound like it's *something*, but what the heck could it be? Did they check her thyroid? I know that sometimes a rapid metabolism can occur if the thyroid is thrown off. Grasping at straws here...

Hope you get some answers soon!

You know, I thought of that one last night. We just found out that my thyroid is really out of wack (and the reason why I can't gain weight while pregnant), and I know my grandma and my aunt both have problems with theirs too, so I was going to call and ask if that was one of the tests on monday. I also thought of checking her for celiac, no clue if either of these were part of the tests since they ordered SOOO many, but I will be checking with the ped monday.

I've been following your story and just wanted to know if you ever got to contact the Ped??? I hope you got some answers. :bighug:

Her thyroid levels that he tested were fine, but based on family history he added a full thyroid panel onto her list of tests we are doing in february. He didn't check for celliac (I guess you can only do preliminary testing through blood work??) but he added that as well just to ease my mind. So far, nothing... Well except the ketones, but nothing else...I'm hoping to walk into the office on February 10th and find out she now weighs 17 lbs and she was just losing weight because she was so active...I doubt it will happen, but it would be nice!

Jillian,

I was going to suggest Celiac Disease. When I read about it in the February issue of Parents magazine I thought about Janelle. Let's hope you can get your answer soon. :crossfing

Well we kind of have some good news, assuming the scales are equal. I'm in the hospital and we weighed Janelle on a baby scale (meant for newborns) yeasterday and she weighed 18 lbs, yes, I said 18!!!! So I think that has to mean she has gained at least something!!! She also seems to be, by our very unscientific measuring, about 31 1/2-32 inches...so she is still super skinny, but at least gaining. I won't get to take her to her appt. (I'm in the hospital till at least the 23rd), but I think the dr. will be happy!
