View Full Version : Glass Shower Doors--how to clean?

Our new house has glass shower doors in the master bathroom...and I think we also have hard water. Anyhow, the doors are really streaky (from the previous owners) with what I assume is a combo of soap scum and hard water. How on earth do we clean them? We've tried various cleansers and a lot of elbow grease, but we see NO change.
Help!

We use a combination of CLR (the "Calcium-Lime-Rust Remover") and a nifty little gadget by Black & Decker called the Scumbuster. It's basically a motorized scrub brush, but it's a wee bit more abrasive than your normal scrubbing sponge, so it doesn't require as much elbow grease to get the gunge off. Good luck!

I've had lots of luck with Zap. It comes in a spray bottle now too (didn't use to). It works great and no scrubbing.

Thanks for the suggestions--we'll (okay, Brian!) put them to the test this weekend.

I would listen to my mom... all the white stuff goes away with a combination of water / vinegar

I was going to suggest the magic erasers too. We have hard water too and they work great.

this thread is very interesting. we are about to move to a home with glass doors on the master shower. I always had this problem in an old apartment I lived in and never knew how to clean them. :)

In our past house, our MBR shower had a glass door and I thought that I cleaned it with either CLR.
After I got it clean, after every shower, we used Clean Shower (i think arm & hammer makes it)...I used it religiously and I ALWAYS had sparkling clean doors after then!

try KABOOM its made by the same people who make orange clean and the oxy thing, it works great on getting the hard water and soap scum off of normal tile, it should work great on shower doors

What about OXY clean? That stuff is supposed to work miracles.
We had the same stuff on our shower doors down the shore. My hubby had to work hard to remove the stuff (I'll have to ask him what he used) and he used that Scumbuster that Anne mentioned above!
Eventually I just got rid of the doors because I hated cleaning them and feeling so cramped with them.

We use Kaboom too! It works awesome on the shower doors. After each shower we use a squeegy to get the excess water off :aok:

I'm not sure what DH used to get the scum off our shower doors...but we use a squeegy to get the water off after a shower, and then spray with some spray it and leave it shower cleaner to keep it from coming back!

When we started to get a build up on our glass door, I first used vinegar. Now, when I have a shower, I wash the shower door when I have my shower. I use a small bathroom scourer pad, and lather it with soap, then rinse off. Comes up a treat. I always wash the shower and tiles when I am in there, saves time later ;)

Do you guys get a product called ExitMould in the US? It is a great product for this sort of stuff. I think I might try the vinegar too though

Kaboom is the greatest. I use that and I have really hard water...what also works good is scrubbing bubbles with clorox...don't remember the exact name but it is where the tub cleaners are. :)

Well, I did try the vinegar, and it reduced the scum, but there still is some on the doors. I think next I'll try the Mr. Clean eraser with the vinegar.

I'll try it--if the Mr. Clean eraser doesn't work...just because I happen to already have the Mr. Clean eraser and I don't have any Kaboom.

I have been reading all the suggestions and I'll try any or all. I have just moved into a new home my husband and I built. The glass in the showers in just installed and i'm not sure how to get the streaks out. I bought the Kaboom, but it said not to let it get on the surface of natural stone or marble. Everything in these is marble. Any suggestions?

You also might want to try vineagar with water in a spray bottle. My mom uses that all the time, I don't but I know it works.

White Vinegar is a great remover of heaps.
Bicarbonate of Soda mixed in is also great.

I cannot believe this! My husband has been raving about the Mr. Clean erasers. In the mean time I have been srubbing, weekly, the glass shower doors until my arms ache while I am in the shower. I read this, I just walked in there and cleaned the door in under 3 minutes with the Mr. Clean erasers. I love that stuff and cannot believe I didn't make the connection when my husband was using it on the walls!

The Mr. Clean erasers don't work on my shower doors for some reason. :dunno: I think it's because my problem is more hard water deposits than soap scum. I squeegee the doors every day and use body wash, so it's just the mineral deposits that I have to deal with. What works really well for me is the non-ammonia glass cleaner in the spray can (made by Sprayway) and newspaper. Oh, and a little elbow grease. The doors end up crystal clear and gleaming that way. :aok:
