View Full Version : I need reassurance from other working parents

Alex is in a wonderful in-home daycare. I don't feel guilty being a working mom because I have such a great provider and I love what I do.
Alex is now singing his ABCs and counting to 20. I feel horrible since I'm not the one teaching him these basics. Yes, we sing the ABC song at home and we count things together, but it's not a consistant basis and its usually while we are doing other things. I know daycare is teaching him what they should be. I know I can reinforce these basics at home, but I feel bad that he picks up so much more at daycare than at home. I do consistantly read to him at home.
Please tell me there are other working parents out there that feel the way I do?!

I feel somewhat the same, but I know that working makes me a sane and better mother:) and he doesn't go to daycare, he goes to his gma's and hes' not learning as much as he should, but I think he will be caught up by kindergarten.

Becky, we're the same way. Joe and Frances learn everything at daycare.

My kids all go to an institutional (for lack of a better term) daycare and are all happy and learning the basics as well. Sometimes its hard to know they're learning those simple things from someone else, but in the same light, it makes those things that they learn from me that much MORE special :dunno:

Becky, I'm right there with ya. I know, though, that Julian is learning some things from me, so like Shanna said, those are extra-special to me. He's learned most of his counting at daycare (although we count things at home), but he's learned counting in French and Spanish from me. :)

I'm glad Jack is learning so much at daycare, because other than ABC's and such, he's learning so much more there than he would at home. He's actually doing phonics now! But, I have to say, we reinforce so much at home as well. I started doing opposites this weekend with Jack, because he found a Bob the Builder opposites book and I found out they're doing them at school too.

I agree with Jeni as G spends her days with my ILs.. I may look into a mother's day out type setting once she's older.. but I think she will be just fine.
I don't think you should be feeling guilty at all.

You are certainly not alone! I really wish I was the one teaching David all that he needs/wants to learn. However, we just can't afford for me to be a SAHM right now. I take great comfort knowing that he is in a great environment where he loves his teacher, enjoys the children and is learning things that I would never think to teach him. We read to him and go over the things that he learns during the day. At least that way he knows that we are interested in him and what he is doing.
What really kills me is like for today as an example! His school is having a Halloween Parade and party. I would give my left hand to be there and share this with him. These are the things that kill me more than anything. All the children dressed up for Halloween and are going to have a parade then they are going to play games and eat goodies! BTW: David dressed up as Spiderman! He looks soooo cute!! I must get a camera (or batteries for my one at home) and take pictures. :photo: I must admit he is the cutest Spiderman I have ever seen!!

Alex will be having a halloween party today at daycare too and parents are forbidden to attend. It's all because they take a group photo of the kids in costume and then they give it to the parents for a Christmas present. I would love to be there, but it's a big :nono:

Don't feel guilty! Jackson is in a private day school and that's exactly what I call it...SCHOOL! He's there to learn! Well, he's there because I work, but my rationalization is that he's going to school to learn. I'm very happy with my decision and Jackson really enjoys it.

That's a bunch of crap!! That was one of the things that I loved about David's school, the parents are invited to come to any and all of the functions!! I dare them to "forbid" me to come to anything that involves my child!!
