View Full Version : Signature limit enforcement

sheila
September 23rd, 2004, 01:42 PM
After many discussions and many attempts to figure out how to enforce signature limits, we have gotten something that works.

Total signatures will now be 400px by 200px. We ask that the main image be no more than 300 x 125. Everything else you want to include with the main image (or use instead of) needs to fit within a 400px by 200px block or it will be cut off.

This size was chosen because the width of *most* of the standard tickers is under 400px. There are some that are a little longer, and we may end up making the limit a little wider if it becomes an issue.

Overall, though, it does mean that people are going to have to pick and choose what they have in their sigs.

Roughly.... this size will allow for:
1 regular "sig image" , 2 lines of text (3 lines of small text)
1 regular "sig image" 1 line of text, 2 blinkies under that
8 regular lines of text
6 lines of text + a ticker
2 tickers and a small line of text

I plan to implement this tonight, I just wanted you to have a little notice in case you want to make some changes to your sigs before then.

So can someone tell me how to add my journal link into my siggie because from the sounds of things my siggie is to big correct?

I would rather fix it before I loose something

How many lines do tickers count as? Is my sig too long in its current state?

sheila
September 23rd, 2004, 02:14 PM
Jayne:
http://www.onceuponalife.com/showthread.php?t=348
1. Go to your journal, highlight the address line in your browser window. Right click and select copy.
2. Go to Edit Signature and write the words you want to have linked ("my journal" or whatever)
3. Highlight those words, then click on the link button: in the little window/box that shows up, right click and choose paste
4. That should work
5. A new little trick I learned: if you add "&goto=newpost" (without the quotes) to the end of what you copied from the address bar, it will take people who click on the link to the last post in your journal instead of the first one.

Nichole:
If you right click on an image and choose properties, you can see the height of the image in pixels. (yours is 70px high). If the total pixels is close to 200, then you will probably miss some of the text. I would allow 25px for a line of regular sized text.

Jayne
September 23rd, 2004, 02:21 PM
Well my ticker is 70 and my blinkies are 40 so I have to get rid of one or both of those plus my text....correct

Jayne

Jayne
September 23rd, 2004, 02:27 PM
and my blinkies are too long correct? I am just trying to get it all figured out!

Jayne

sheila
September 23rd, 2004, 02:39 PM
yup. The blinkies are 150 pixels wide, each. 150*3 = 450. So its 50 pixels too long.

And tallest one is 40 pixels... which makes your height 125 + 40 + 70 = 235. So its 35 pixels too tall as well.

You lilypie ticker is 400 pixels wide, so that might be a good gauge for you.

Jayne
September 23rd, 2004, 02:44 PM
I will just come up with something else..I have a lot of work to do before you change it all tonight

Can there be an anouncement at the top of the main page. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be wondering what happened when their siggies dissappear or get shortened. I just happended on this thread by chance!

Becky - yours is like 1 pixel off!

Photo - 125
Text - 25
Blinkie - 51

Total = 201

So - if you had a slightly smaller blinkie, you'd be ok.

Your ticker is 70
That's 195. Assuming your text is 25, like Becky's, you are 20 over.

This will all make more sense when I put the limiter in. Then whatever is "over" won't show up. I think It will be much easier to fix when what doesn't show up is very noticable.

Silke

Is a sig image, a ticker, and journal link then too much? Lots of members have that in their sig.

I am so sorry I couldn't figure out a better way to explain it!

but it sucks I can't have my FF ticker and my little blinkies and photo :(

Jayne
September 23rd, 2004, 11:50 PM
Elisete..just go to your journal..click and copy the link..then go to your user cp. Type in what you want to say in the siggie area..then highlight it. Click on the globe link thing..and paste your journal link in (delete the http or it will be there twice) at the end of your link type the &goto=newpost..

that should work for you!

Is there no chance that we might be able to up the pixel height a little bit? Lots of tickers have been cut off. With the current limit it's either a sig image or ticker but not both together.

Well, my blinkie disappeared, so I guess I didn't do something right.I see it, next to your journal link.

For those who want a ticker and siggie, you can always resize your siggies and/or make new ones that are smaller. If tickers are about 70 or 74 pixels tall, just subtract that from 200, along with the additional height of your text lines and/or blinkies (usually about 25 pixels), and make your siggies no taller than maybe 100 or so. They can be up to 125 tall, but you can still make nice ones that are shorter and would allow you to fit other images, as well.

Nocona
September 24th, 2004, 08:46 AM
Nichole - your sig is 129 pixels tall. Try reducing that (they are only supposed to be 125) and see what happens. It doesn't seem sigs and tickers together are fitting in the requirement though.

The easiest way to resize your sig is through the Edit Signature (http://www.onceuponalife.com/profile.php?do=editsignature) page. If you click on an image in that box, you will be able to drag/scale it with your mouse. (I hope I am describing that well)

Ok... i am confused.. but I will figure this out. Promise

sheila
September 24th, 2004, 09:27 AM
In the Edit Signature page, if you click on the image, it will have white lines with little boxes around it. If you put your mouse over one of the corse boxes, it will turn into an arrow that points both ways... if you drag in, the image will get smaller (and stay the same proportion).

Does that explain it a little betteR?

Sherry
September 24th, 2004, 09:30 AM
Yes, thank you.

I guess I am just sad that I cannot fit all 4 of my kids in there there plus my weight loss progress.

Chantal
September 24th, 2004, 10:38 AM
Sheila... can it be made just a BIT bigger? All I have is a siggie image and a fertility friend ticker... and for some reason the links for each of those dont work anymore...

I like the idea of restricting it - but this seems to be a bit too small to accomodate even simple siggies. I notice that most people who have the tickers - have lost all or part of it with the new restrictions :(

Why are my two lines of text missing? My sig image is 300 x 125 pixels, and I changed my sig to where I had two lines of text - my weight loss garden with smilies, and a link to my Pampered Chef website, text only. How come the only thing showing up is my sig image? :dunno:

sheila
September 24th, 2004, 12:47 PM
Its missing because of all the blank space between the image and the text. The blank lines count as lines... even though there isn't anything in them, they still take up space.

September 24th, 2004, 12:59 PM

Why is my ticker cut off? My ticker is 75 pixels high, and my sig image is 120 pixels high. That's less than 200, and there's no space in the middle. What's going on? I don't mind resizing my sig image when I get home, but I am not sure how much shorter it's supposed to be.

Cazzle
September 25th, 2004, 09:35 PM
Not to be a troublemaker, but I'm just curious to know why there's been a decision to enforce the limit, and how this particular limit was chosen. Have there been problems with excessively long signatures? I'm just a little disappointed that the regulation length is so short.

Has this been discussed elsewhere? Is there are more appropriate place to ask these questions?

sheila
September 25th, 2004, 10:15 PM
I know it might seem arbitrary. And it seems small because we have been allowed to have signatures as big as people wanted them.

We've had questions/comments/issues in the past:
http://www.onceuponalife.com/showthread.php?t=6625

And we had a group discussion about it shortly after that:
http://www.onceuponalife.com/showthread.php?t=4618

The bottom line was that anything we picked would be considered too big by some people and too small by others. I had to choose something I thought was reasonable. For most people, everything you want to have in your signature will still fit... but you may have to shrink the sig image a little.

...then let me explain: All subscribers can see your signature. Anyone who comes to OUAL who is not a subscriber (whether they are a guest or a registered user) cannot see your signature or your avatar.

This was something I had been trying to accomplish as a privacy measure for a while. I had an idea of something that might work at dinner yesterday, and it turned out to work. So now only people with stars by their names will know that you have a signature and an avatar.

Does that make more sense?

Total signatures will now be 400px by 200px. We ask that the main image be no more than 300 x 125. Everything else you want to include with the main image (or use instead of) needs to fit within a 400px by 200px block or it will be cut off.

Is this still a requirement? I've been seeing pictures that are over 125 high. :scan:

Yours is fine, Kristen.

I don't have a problem with images that are over. The 125 limit was impoed 4 years ago, and there aren't as many people using big images in their sigs anymore. It hasn't been a problem that I've thought about, so I haven't been checking.

None of those sig images seem all that large to me. :dunno: The point of the limit was to prevent people from using ginormous 500 pixel images in their sigs so that we didn't have to scroll for miles just to get to the next post.

I guess I don't really see what the problem is. :dunno:

ETA: Obviously they aren't over the 200 limit, but I was just wondering about the pic limits.

Does it make some difference in things on here??

None of those sig images seem all that large to me. :dunno: The point of the limit was to prevent people from using ginormous 500 pixel images in their sigs so that we didn't have to scroll for miles just to get to the next post.

I guess I don't really see what the problem is. :dunno:
No problem, as I said before to Sheila, thanks for the explanation. But, if there is going to be a rule on the size of the picture in our signatures, shouldn't it be followed/enforced? The ONLY reason I brought it up was I'm a mod on another site and we are in the middle of signature enforcement. SO because of that, I just noticed these.

No, it doesn't matter what the pictures are, as I posted there are two with family pictures.
