View Full Version : Describe your SAHM wardrobe/style...
AahRee September 11th, 2004, 10:10 PM Okay, I think I'm having a little identity crisis in anticipation of turning 30 in December. I feel like my clothes are really sloppy and unflattering - which is fine in college, because even sloppy looks cute then - but is not so hot on a 30-year-old.
So, what are y'all wearing on a daily basis? What does your closet look like? I went through mine and pulled out everything that doesn't fit, is stained/holey/otherwise ruined, and/or just isn't flattering on me. I was left with:
Everyday clothes:
3 short-sleeved t-shirts (light blue and dark blue, both with a little stretch, and teal blue, no stretch, and a little on the short side)
2 tank tops (beige with shelf bra, stretch and actually more of a camisole, and white ribbed cotton, loose fitting)
1 3/4 sleeve, blue and white striped t-shirt (horizontal, so not super flattering, but...)
1 long sleeved t shirt (white with Christmasy print on it)
1 black cotton sweater (long-sleeved, fitted, ribbed)
1 dark green cashmere sweater
2 pairs cropped pants (light blue - which is actually just found a stain on, and white)
1 dark grey knit *suit* (more like pajama-type bottoms and a jacket)
1 black velour sweat suit (pants and jacket)
2 fleece jackets (navy/red with San Francisco logo and a light blue, cropped with a hood)
2 rain pullovers (navy/orange and black)
Workout clothes:
1 blue man-cut t-shirt
1 blue/white bodysuit-type top
1 pair cropped blue/white nylon pants
1 pair grey track pants
1 pair blue/white nylon shorts
I went out today and bought a pair of jeans, because it's getting cold here, and white capris aren't the most appropriate thing any more. But I feel like my wardrobe is pretty pathetic, and I'm not even sure where to begin improving it!
I have a couple other pairs of pants that don't fit now, but (hopefully) will fit in the next few months. I also have a few special occasion things that don't fit, but will hopefully fit by Christmastime.
I obviously don't want to stock up, since I'm hoping to lose quite a bit more weight, but I also don't want to look like a total frump between now and then. Help! Any ideas? What are you all wearing? I need a fashion intervention.
aylhu September 12th, 2004, 12:13 AM I am right behind you...January for me. I feel frumpy, too. Nothing fits me anymore. Having two kids has made exercise impossible! I just got a new pair of jeans from LL Bean and it's finally cooling down to wear them. I am mostly a jeans and fitted tee shirt or comfy sweater person! Since I'm nursing, dresses are rare!
Dori September 12th, 2004, 05:27 AM Oh AahRee.. I feel your pain. I went through this BIG time after Lauren was born. I have always taken great pride in my wardrobe, even my maternity clothes... I have always been that way.. So being a SAHM you just kind of loose it without realizing it..
Some suggestions (and if you have any... puleez pass them along)
If I am going out somewhere (grocery, doctor) I wear a pair of jeans and a lot of time a cotton button up top with a collar, not tucked in. Comforable yet it looks nice.. Some great ones are Lauren by Ralph Lauren. They can be pricey but you can find them on sale and they will last and look nice for years. I always wear jeans, always. The way they fit you makes a big difference too..
I finally threw my overalls away.. so comfortable but they just did NOTHING for me, to say the least. That and I threw away anything that had a Holiday print on it. I learned that on an Oprah show on time.. and it makes complete sense.. she said it screams, "I am a Mom." So true.
Okay I hope that helps a little and please pass along any new findings..
oh, a great place to get jeans is Ann Taylor Loft. They look a little nicer and are still very comfortable. :)

Michele September 12th, 2004, 10:42 AM I am having the same problem. My entire wardrobe consists of capri pants, tank tops, hoodie sweatshirts and yoga pants. It is getting to be that time where capri pants are too summery, but if I stop wearing those I don't have anything else. I really need to buy some new clothes but I don't know where to start either. Like you Anne, I am trying to lose weight, so I don't want to invest in too much at my current size, but I don't want to look like a slob all the time either.
magoo September 12th, 2004, 12:29 PM T-shirts
Fleece vests for winter
Jeans
Shorts
That's it. Pretty exciting, eh? I've never been too concerned about fashion and being a SAHM certainly hasn't helped. Even when I was working, I was a program instructor for the YMCA, so I just wore a red t-shirt and black yoga pants.
Karri September 12th, 2004, 10:56 PM I dont have much because last fall I was PG and then in winter, I was losing baby weight (and before that I worked and had to dress up). Anyway, looking in my closets, I have a ton of clothes. But I dont wear much of it (I should really purge, but I am just not ready  ) . What I regularily wear:
low rise shorts
capris
jeans, cargos, cords
fitted tank tops
short or long sleeve shirts
zip up hooded sweatshirts and sweaters (fitted)
I always hated wearing jeans until I finally found some that fit me properly. I HATE having stuff on my waist, but I also hate bending over and having my crack hang out :lol2:
All my tshirts and long sleeve shirts have a stretchy element to them. I find that when stuff doesnt hang on me, I feel much better. I have some cheap solid color t-shirts (crew and vneck) and long sleeve shirts from Old Navy and I just love them.
Most of my winter stuff is things like ribbed turtleneck sweaters that I picked up cheap at Old Navy or at the Gap outlet. I like them b/c they are casual, but you can dress them up if you need to and most importantly, you can toss them in the wash.
I have a few outfits from Ann Taylor Loft that I wear when I go out (MOMS night out, out to dinner, etc). Its good quality stuff, yet when its on sale, its reasonably priced, and its pretty classic.
Right now I am on a quest for the perfect SAHM black shoe  I bought some brown Birk clogs last year, so I have my comfy brown shoe, but I cant find a black one I like and the only black shoe I have is a high heel tall boot....not very good for chasing toddlers!!
SarahK September 13th, 2004, 03:28 PM Last fall/winter I was pregnant and before that I was working...so my fall/winter wardrobe needs some help! I invested a bit of money into my spring/summer wardrobe this year though so that's okay. This summer I wore a of capris and some fitted solid color Ts and felt pretty good about myself.
Lynn September 13th, 2004, 03:42 PM I went through the I-hate-my-wardrobe thing last year too. It certainly didn't help that DS was constantly spitting up on me at the time, and the more stains I got the frumpier I felt. :(
I wear pretty much what Karri does. In the Fall I wear I mainly wear ribbed shirts/t-necks because they seem to fit the best. I can toss them in the wash and they don't come out all stretched. They don't look sloppy and I can throw them on with khakis if I want to look nice but not overly dressy. They maintain their shape really well. I also have a few casual wool sweathers (Eddie Bauer, Gap - classic styles like cable knit, v-neck, etc) that I like wearing too. I also have long sleeve t-shirts and some hoodies too. Occasionally I'll wear my Nike wind pants with a hoodie or something just to be comfy.
In the summer, I am alllll about khaki shorts and solid colored fitted t-shirts. It looks nice, it's comfy and it all matches! I have a few cute sleeveless shirts too that I can toss on with a cute skirt if I'm going somewhere semi-nice. I also wear capris if it gets a little cool out.
As far as pants go I have a hard time finding stuff that fits me properly. I'm tall and have hips  so butt crack showing doesn't work for me. But if I do wear jeans I at least wear the kind that are in-style right now. I love my stretchy boot leg jeans. I have cargos too, in khaki and a navy color that I love.
If we're going out (rare!) for dinner by ourselves or something, I'll pull out a pair of my black dressy pants and throw on a nice shirt (that I *gasp* have to iron!). It's nice to do that every once in awhile.
Before being a SAHM I worked in sales, so I have a million suits/silk shirts/long skirts/heels/tall boots. I really should get rid of some of them but I'm just not ready to yet. It would certainly give me more closet room!
Eva September 13th, 2004, 04:40 PM I can sum it up in 2 words: Old Navy. I am starting to feel like I am in a rut. Everything I seem to buy lately (besides jeans which are Eddie bauer) is from there. In the Summer I lived in a neutral shorts or Capris with a coloured top. On colder days, I wear my comfy lounge pants with a sweater when I stay in or jeans or khakis when I go out. I am also big into twin sweater sets. On really lazy colder days, I live in pj bottoms with a sweat shirt. When we go out somewhere nice either wear a dress, a skirt or top or black pants with a nice shirt. I need to get some more nice clothes as my wardrobe is limited in that area. Even when I was working, I didn't have a lot of nice career wear since I had to wear a unifrom. I was big into buying cute uniforms instead of cute clothes then because that is what I wore the most. I have a big rubbermaid container full of nursing uniforms.
Michele September 13th, 2004, 08:34 PM Well, I bit the bullet and went shopping today. I bought myself a nice pair of jeans, dark, antiqued looking wash, that are boot cut with a little stretch in them. I actually bought them at Lane Bryant - I used to have issues with shopping there, but the jeans are really nice, they don't show off my crack...and I wear the smallest size they have there, so that felt good. I would highly recommend their jeans to anyone who wears a 14 or up. I may go back and get another pair in their lighter wash.
I also went to New York and Company (used to be Learner) and got 2 long sleeved t-shirts (but nicer than normal t-shirts) and 2 v-neck shells that will look nice under a cardigan or something.
Then, I had to stop by Old Navy where I bought a sweater that zips up, a new black hoodie (just had to do it) and a new pair of yoga pants (b/c mine from last year look like crap)...
I went through my closet and I found a pair of khakis, a pair of nice black pants, and a pair of chocolate brown pants as well as some turtlenecks and sweaters that are still decent.
So, I am set for a while with clothes...I am NOT buying any more until I drop a few sizes. Now I need some shoes, currently all my shoes are either "work shoes" (uncomfy, high heels) or flip flops...
Cortney September 13th, 2004, 09:24 PM Right now I am on a quest for the perfect SAHM black shoe  I bought some brown Birk clogs last year, so I have my comfy brown shoe, but I cant find a black one I like and the only black shoe I have is a high heel tall boot....not very good for chasing toddlers!!
Just dropping in to say that my perfect SAHM black shoe is my Dansko clogs!!!!
Karri September 13th, 2004, 09:33 PM Cortney --Do you have the Matisse ones? (or do you know?) I was looking at those on Zappos.com the other night. I have never heard of them, so I didnt know if they were worth the money!

They are SO worth the $$$$. I have a pair of brown ones that I've worn probably every other day in the fall/winter/spring for the past 4 years that still look pretty good. I also have a new pair of black ones that I love (I got them for Christmas last year)
I prefer the professional oiled. :) If you have a chance to buy some- I'd do it. They're expensive, but definitely pay for themselves. :)
Cortney September 13th, 2004, 10:34 PM oh yeah- I forgot that zappos has the reviews at the bottom- definitely check out the reviews :)
EricaMG September 17th, 2004, 04:43 PM I'm on the lookout for a SAHM wardrobe. We recently had a garage sale, and I sold off a lot of my working wardrobe, so I've got some space in my closet. I really like Ann Taylor Loft, and picked out a perfect pair of jeans (so comfy! ANd usually I hate jeans) but I'm waiting (and waiting) for them to go on sale.
I tend to wear a lot of khaki pants with dark colored ribbed turtlenecks lately. I like pants that sit low on my waist.
Karri- I second the Dansko clogs as being the best shoe!! They're all I wear!!! I remember at first thinking they weren't all that pretty, but once I put 'em on, I couldn't take them off and I've gone through 3 pairs in 3 years (again, they're all I wear, except for sandals), so they last really well. They don't look so hot with capris, though.
Nichole September 17th, 2004, 07:31 PM Ooh, I really like those clogs! I've been looking for some good black shoes, too. :aok:
My style is pretty basic, too. I work part-time and my work environment is very casual (the only rule is that we can't wear open-toed shoes), so my SAH and work attire is the same:
Jeans
Khakis
Shorts (khaki and denim)
V-neck T-shirts, sleeveless shirts, or tanks in summer
3/4 sleeve shirts when it's cooler
long sleeved T's and fitted sweaters or turtlenecks in the winter
ncshop4shoes September 24th, 2004, 08:30 AM I wear plain color t-shirts with jean or capris in summer, and I wear plain color long sleeve t-shirts with jeans in the fall, and plain color sweat shirts with jeans in the winter! My problem is that I never have anout jeans. I swear I can put holes in the knees in about 6 months.....I must be hard on them!

redhairedgirl September 24th, 2004, 02:16 PM My wardrobe.... hmm.... well, after I lost weight, I decided that I wanted to dress pretty again. In the summer, I wear a lot of little shift dresses. I pair them with my slip on sandals and that's pretty much it. Throw a cardigan over my shoulders if need be.
Cooler weather, I wear t-shirts of different colors with jeans, skirts or black chinos. I have some nice long sleeve shirts, some beautiful cardigans and a fleece jacket that I sometimes wear so often that you'd think it was growing on me.
I am casual, but a bit more dressy than some. I'm finding that if I get dressed nicer (than my yoga pants and a t-shirt) I feel a lot better about myself. I don't always dress nicely... sometimes I am frumpy when I stay in the house all day.
Bonnie September 28th, 2004, 01:45 AM Right now I am on a quest for the perfect SAHM black shoe  I bought some brown Birk clogs last year, so I have my comfy brown shoe, but I cant find a black one I like and the only black shoe I have is a high heel tall boot....not very good for chasing toddlers!! :lol:OK, not a SAHM, but I do not wear anything but super comfy shoes... have you ever tried Born shoes? They are really comfortable and they have some very cute black ones... I have about 4 pair, and I don't think I can ever wear regular shoes again....
I've always wanted a pair of those Dansko clogs too :) I have a friend who is a nurse, on her feet all day and she lives in them :)
Brandi September 30th, 2004, 05:44 PM You know, I dressed up more when I was in college than I do now. I mostly wear jeans and t-shirts. For the winter, I really like turtleneck sweaters! You can wear them with jeans or nicer pants - or even a skirt.
