View Full Version : Retaking classes after graduation...

This is an odd question, but I thought I'd put it out there for consideration. I have a BA from IU in Communications, and due to a lot of circumstances in college (lack of studying adequately, too much time drinking, a marriage and divorce, etc), I have a crappy 2.5 GPA on my transcript. I attended school full time from 1990 to 1994, then took a break until fall 1997, when I went back part time to complete my degree. Those two semesters (1997/98) I got all A's, so going back as an adult obviously helped my GPA.

Here's the issue....I want to go back to become a teacher, and have found a Transition to Teaching program here in Indiana....but it requires a 3.0 GPA. I've sent in my transcript for evaluation, and am scared to death they're going to tell me no because of my GPA. I'm trying to come up with alternate plans so I can still pursue my dream, and wondered if it is possible to retake any of those classes to get a better grade.

In other words, is a college transcript for a BA a 'closed book', grades written in stone, no changes possible? Or can I redo things now and improve that stupid 2.5?

sigh...if only I could go back to the early 1990's and redo my college years.....

Amy,

Call the admissions office or whatever office handled the Transition to Teaching program. Tell them exactly what you have wriiten here. Ask them what options there are. My experience has been that colleges are willing to work with students, especially those that are re-entering academia as adults. I don't think it's a closed book at all. Just be sure to pursue any answers they give you and look at any possible avenues. There is always a way.

Trust me...I graduated H.S. with a 1.74 G.P.A and was accepted to a small private Catholic College in Denver. Albeit on probation, but I was accepted and went on to get my BA and now I am a semester away from my Masters in Special Ed. and my current G.P.A is 3.889.
